French for Formal Meetings: Making a Suggestion and Taking Your Turn
Learn polite French phrases to propose an idea or ask to add something in a structured, formal discussion, and how to respect turn-taking.

In a formal French meeting or structured discussion, you often cannot simply start talking when you have an idea. You need a short, polite phrase that signals you want the floor, then you give your suggestion. This lesson teaches elementary-level phrases such as J'ai une suggestion and Est-ce que je peux ajouter quelque chose ? It also shows how these differ from relaxed group chat, where people interrupt and overlap freely. You will practise requesting a turn, making one clear suggestion, and handing the floor back.
By the end, you can…
- ask politely for a turn in a formal French discussion.
- make a simple suggestion using J'ai une suggestion or Je propose.
- hand the floor back to the group or the chair.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

J'ai une suggestion.
I have a suggestion.
zhay ewn soo-zhes-TYON
A direct but polite way to announce that you want to propose an idea. Use it after the chair invites comments or after a short pause.
Est-ce que je peux ajouter quelque chose ?
Can I add something?
es-kuh zhuh puh ah-zhoo-TAY kel-kuh shoz
A very common, safe way to ask for the floor. The question form Est-ce que je peux... is neutral-polite and works in most formal settings.
Puis-je faire une remarque ?
May I make a remark?
pweezh fair ewn ruh-MARK
More formal than Est-ce que je peux... Use it in very structured meetings, with a chair, or when speaking to a superior. The inverted form Puis-je is polite written-style French.
Je propose de commencer par le budget.
I suggest starting with the budget.
zhuh pro-POZ duh ko-mahn-SAY par luh boo-ZHAY
Je propose de + infinitive is a clean way to make a concrete suggestion. It sounds constructive and avoids sounding like an order.
Merci, je vous rends la parole.
Thank you, I give the floor back to you.
mair-SEE, zhuh voo rahn lah pah-ROL
Use this to close your turn and hand the discussion back to the chair or the group. Rendre la parole à quelqu'un means to give someone the floor.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.
Make it make sense
Useful pattern
To ask for a turn, use Est-ce que je peux + infinitive: Est-ce que je peux ajouter quelque chose ? (Can I add something?), Est-ce que je peux faire une suggestion ? (Can I make a suggestion?). In more formal French, invert the verb: Puis-je ajouter quelque chose ? Puis-je faire une suggestion ? To make the suggestion itself, use J'ai une suggestion or Je propose de + infinitive: Je propose de reporter la décision (I suggest postponing the decision).
When to use it
Use these phrases in meetings, classes, debates or any structured discussion where a chair or moderator controls who speaks. Raise your hand or wait for a pause, then say Est-ce que je peux ajouter quelque chose ? If the chair says Oui, je vous en prie or Allez-y, you have the floor. Keep your suggestion short, then say Merci, je vous rends la parole. In informal conversation with friends, you can simply say Attends, j'ai une idée or J'ajoute un truc, but that is too direct for a formal meeting.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
Nous avons terminé le premier point. Est-ce que quelqu'un a une suggestion ?
We have finished the first point. Does anyone have a suggestion?noo za-von tair-mee-nay luh pruh-myay pwan. es-kuh kel-kun ah ewn soo-zhes-TYONOui, est-ce que je peux ajouter quelque chose ?
Yes, can I add something?wee, es-kuh zhuh puh ah-zhoo-TAY kel-kuh shozBien sûr, je vous en prie.
Of course, please go ahead.byan sewr, zhuh voo zahn preeMerci. J'ai une suggestion : je propose de commencer par le budget.
Thank you. I have a suggestion: I suggest starting with the budget.mair-SEE. zhay ewn soo-zhes-TYON: zhuh pro-POZ duh ko-mahn-SAY par luh boo-ZHAYA little context goes a long way
In many French formal meetings, the chair explicitly gives the floor with expressions like Allez-y, Je vous en prie or Vous avez la parole. Interrupting without this signal can seem rude, even if your French is polite. Puis-je is more formal than Est-ce que je peux and is common in writing, in very structured meetings, or when speaking to someone of higher status. In relaxed conversation among friends or colleagues, turn-taking is looser and direct interruptions are normal.
One thing to watch for
Saying Je veux ajouter quelque chose (I want to add something) or J'ai une suggestion, écoutez-moi to claim the floor.
Try this instead: Je veux sounds like a demand in a formal meeting. Ask first: Est-ce que je peux ajouter quelque chose ? or Puis-je ajouter quelque chose ? Then wait for a signal such as Oui, je vous en prie before you speak.
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1How do you politely ask to add something in a formal French meeting?
Show a sample answer
Est-ce que je peux ajouter quelque chose ?
This uses the neutral-polite Est-ce que je peux + infinitive pattern. Puis-je ajouter quelque chose ? is also correct and more formal.
2Make a concrete suggestion: start with the budget.
Show a sample answer
Je propose de commencer par le budget.
Je propose de + infinitive introduces a suggestion. J'ai une suggestion : commençons par le budget is also possible, but the Je propose pattern is simpler at elementary level.
3What do you say to hand the floor back after your turn?
Show a sample answer
Merci, je vous rends la parole.
This politely closes your turn and returns control to the chair or group. Merci, j'ai terminé (Thank you, I have finished) is also acceptable in many meetings.
In a formal French discussion, ask for the floor with Est-ce que je peux ajouter quelque chose ? or Puis-je faire une suggestion ?, make one clear suggestion with J'ai une suggestion or Je propose de..., then hand the floor back with Merci, je vous rends la parole.
