Confirming Understanding in French: Paraphrasing with 'Si je comprends bien'

Learn to paraphrase a French speaker's point to confirm you understood, using phrases like 'Si je comprends bien...' and 'Vous voulez dire que...'.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A quiet illustrated scene for evening language practice

Active listening in French means more than nodding. When someone explains something, you can check your understanding by repeating their main point back in your own words: 'Si je comprends bien, vous dites que...' This lesson teaches you to paraphrase a speaker's point to confirm it, without summarizing a whole conversation. You will practise question forms, indirect speech, and polite checking phrases that work in everyday French.

    By the end, you can…

    • paraphrase a speaker's main point in French to confirm I understood it.
    • use polite question phrases like 'Si je comprends bien...' and 'Vous voulez dire que...' in conversation.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

Si je comprends bien, vous dites que le projet est retardé.

If I understand correctly, you're saying the project is delayed.

see zhuh kohn-prahn byan, voo deet kuh luh pro-zhay ay ruh-tar-day

Standard polite phrase to check your understanding of a factual point. Use 'tu' with friends: 'Si je comprends bien, tu dis que...'.

Vous voulez dire que la réunion est annulée ?

Do you mean the meeting is cancelled?

voo voo-lay deer kuh la ray-oo-nyohn ay ta-nyoo-lay

Rising intonation makes this a yes/no question. In Quebec, 'annulée' is pronounced with a tighter final vowel, but the phrase is the same.

Donc, pour résumer, il faut envoyer le dossier avant vendredi.

So, to sum up, we need to send the file before Friday.

    dohnk, poor ray-zoo-may, eel foh tahn-vwa-yay luh doh-syay ah-vahn vahn-druh-dee

Use 'donc' to introduce your paraphrase. This confirms a practical instruction, not a whole conversation.

Si j'ai bien compris, vous préférez commencer par le budget.

If I understood correctly, you prefer to start with the budget.

see zhay byan kohn-pree, voo pray-fay-ray koh-mahn-say par luh boo-zhay

'Si j'ai bien compris' is slightly more formal and often used after a longer explanation.

Je reformule : vous voulez qu'on attende votre réponse.

Let me rephrase: you want us to wait for your reply.

    zhuh ruh-for-mool: voo voo-lay kohn ah-tahnd vot ruh-pohns

'Je reformule' signals explicitly that you are paraphrasing. Useful in meetings and negotiations.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The core pattern is: checking phrase + que + your paraphrase. Examples: 'Si je comprends bien, vous dites que le client a changé d'avis.' 'Vous voulez dire que la livraison arrive lundi ?' After 'que', the verb is usually in the indicative: 'vous dites', 'il faut', 'la réunion est annulée'. You can also use 'donc' or 'alors' to introduce the paraphrase: 'Donc, vous préférez reporter la décision.' Keep the paraphrase short: one main point, not a full summary.

    When to use it

Use these phrases when you need to confirm a specific point before acting. For example, after a colleague explains a change: 'Si je comprends bien, la date limite est le 15, pas le 10 ?' In a shop: 'Vous voulez dire que la garantie est de deux ans ?' In class: 'Si j'ai bien compris, l'exercice est à rendre demain.' Avoid using them to summarize a whole meeting; that is a different skill. Here, you are checking one point to avoid a misunderstanding.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

Pour le lancement, on doit d'abord valider le budget avec la direction.

For the launch, we first need to validate the budget with management.poor luh lahns-mahn, ohn dwa dah-bor vah-lee-day luh boo-zhay ah-vek la dee-rek-syohn
    B

Si je comprends bien, vous dites qu'on ne peut pas commencer sans l'accord de la direction.

If I understand correctly, you're saying we can't start without management's approval.see zhuh kohn-prahn byan, voo deet kohn nuh puh pah koh-mahn-say sahn lah-kor duh la dee-rek-syohn
    A

Exactement. Et il faut aussi prévoir une réunion la semaine prochaine.

Exactly. And we also need to plan a meeting next week.eg-zak-tuh-mahn. ay eel foh toh-see pray-vwar ewn ray-oo-nyohn la suh-men pro-shen
    B

Donc, pour résumer, on attend l'accord, puis on fixe la réunion.

So, to sum up, we wait for approval, then we set the meeting.dohnk, poor ray-zoo-may, ohn ah-tahn lah-kor, pwee ohn feeks la ray-oo-nyohn

A little context goes a long way

In French professional settings, paraphrasing to confirm is seen as careful and respectful, not as a sign of weak comprehension. Using 'vous' with colleagues you don't know well is standard in France; in Quebec, 'vous' is also common at work, while 'tu' may appear faster in informal teams. 'Si je comprends bien' is neutral and works in both regions.

    One thing to watch for

Using 'Si je comprends bien, vous dites de partir tôt.'

Try this instead: After 'vous dites', use 'que' + indicative, not 'de' + infinitive. Say: 'Si je comprends bien, vous dites qu'il faut partir tôt.' The structure 'dire de + infinitive' exists ('vous dites de partir'), but it means 'you tell someone to leave', which changes the meaning. For paraphrasing a point, use 'que' + clause.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1Paraphrase this point to confirm: 'Le rapport doit être envoyé avant midi.' Use 'Si je comprends bien...'

    Show a sample answer

Si je comprends bien, le rapport doit être envoyé avant midi.

This repeats the main point with the same structure. You could also say 'Si je comprends bien, vous dites que le rapport doit être envoyé avant midi.' Both are correct.

2A colleague says: 'Je préfère qu'on reporte la décision à demain.' Confirm with 'Vous voulez dire que...'

    Show a sample answer

Vous voulez dire que vous préférez reporter la décision à demain ?

This paraphrases the preference and uses a rising question intonation. 'Vous voulez dire qu'on reporte la décision à demain ?' is also acceptable if you keep the same subject.

3Which phrase explicitly signals a paraphrase: 'Donc, ...' or 'Si je comprends bien, ...'?

    Show a sample answer

Both can signal a paraphrase, but 'Je reformule : ...' is the most explicit.

'Donc' introduces a conclusion or paraphrase, and 'Si je comprends bien' checks understanding. 'Je reformule' states directly that you are rephrasing. All three are valid in context.

    Take this with you

To confirm understanding in French, paraphrase one point with 'Si je comprends bien, vous dites que...' or 'Vous voulez dire que...?', then wait for confirmation before you act.
