How to Talk About Product Recalls and Contamination in French

Learn French vocabulary and sentence patterns for reporting food recalls, contamination and public health alerts, including how they differ from personal allergies.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Friends talking over coffee in a city café

When a food product is withdrawn from shops because of contamination, French speakers use a specific set of words that are not the same as those for personal allergies. This lesson teaches you how to report a recall, describe a contamination risk, and distinguish a public health measure from an individual allergic reaction. You will practise phrases used in news reports, supermarket notices and conversations with friends.

    By the end, you can…

    • describe a product recall and a contamination risk in French.
    • distinguish between a public health alert and a personal allergy.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

Un rappel de produit a été annoncé par les autorités sanitaires.

A product recall was announced by the health authorities.

    uh rah-PEL duh pro-DWEE ah ay tay ah-non-SAY par lay zoh-toh-ree-TAY sah-nee-TAIR

Formal news or official notice; rappel here means recall, not reminder.

Ce lot de fromage est contaminé par la listeria.

This batch of cheese is contaminated with listeria.

suh loh duh froh-MAHZH ay kon-tah-mee-NAY par lah lees-tay-REE-ah

Use lot for a specific batch; contaminé par for the contaminant.

Il ne faut pas consommer ce produit, il présente un risque pour la santé publique.

This product must not be consumed; it poses a risk to public health.

eel nuh foh pah kon-soh-MAY suh pro-DWEE, eel pray-ZAHNT un reesk poor lah sahn-TAY poo-BLEEK

Standard warning on recall posters and government alerts.

Je suis allergique aux arachides, mais ce n'est pas une contamination.

I am allergic to peanuts, but this is not a contamination.

zhuh swee zah-lair-ZHEEK oh zah-rah-SHEED, may suh nay pah ewn kon-tah-mee-nah-SYON

Contrasts a personal allergy with a public health issue.

Le produit a été retiré de la vente par précaution.

The product was withdrawn from sale as a precaution.

luh pro-DWEE ah ay tay ruh-tee-RAY duh lah VAHNT par pray-koh-SYON

Common in supermarket notices and press releases.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

Use rappel de produit for a recall and contamination for the presence of a harmful agent. The structure être contaminé par + contaminant is standard: La salade est contaminée par la bactérie E. coli. For a public warning, use il ne faut pas + infinitive: Il ne faut pas manger ce produit. To contrast with allergy, say allergique à + allergen, for example allergique au lait, and add mais ce n'est pas une contamination to clarify that the issue is personal, not collective.

    When to use it

Use these phrases when reading a recall notice, warning friends, or discussing a health alert. In a supermarket, you might say: Ce lot a été rappelé, ne le prenez pas. In a news report, you will hear: Les autorités ont ordonné un rappel de produit. For a personal allergy, use allergique à, not contaminé: Je suis allergique aux fruits à coque. Keep rappel for official recalls and contamination for the health risk itself.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

A little context goes a long way

In France, official recalls are often published by Rappel Conso and use formal wording such as retrait de la vente and rappel de produit. In everyday conversation, people may simply say il y a un rappel or c'est contaminé. The phrase risque pour la santé publique signals a collective issue, while allergique à remains personal. In Belgium and Switzerland, the same terms are generally understood, though local agencies may phrase notices slightly differently.

    One thing to watch for

Using rappel to mean a reminder in a recall context, or saying Je suis contaminé for a personal allergy.

Try this instead: Use rappel de produit for a recall and allergique à for an allergy. Say: J'ai une allergie aux arachides, not Je suis contaminé aux arachides. For a reminder, use un rappel in another context, but in public health, rappel de produit is the fixed expression.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How would you say 'This batch is contaminated with listeria' in French?

    Show a sample answer

Ce lot est contaminé par la listeria.

This uses the standard pattern être contaminé par + contaminant. You could also say Ce lot présente un risque de listeria, which is valid in official notices.

2What is the difference between une allergie and une contamination in French public health language?

    Show a sample answer

Une allergie is a personal reaction to a substance, while une contamination is the presence of a harmful agent in a product or environment, affecting public health.

The key contrast is individual versus collective. Allergique à describes a person; contaminé describes a product or place. Both can be true at once, but they are not synonyms.

3Translate: 'The product was withdrawn from sale as a precaution.'

    Show a sample answer

Le produit a été retiré de la vente par précaution.

Retiré de la vente is the standard phrase for withdrawal from sale. Par précaution is common in official French. You could also say retiré de la vente à titre préventif, which is equally correct.

    Take this with you

Use rappel de produit and contamination for public health recalls, and allergique à for personal allergies; keep the two ideas separate in French.
