French for Elementary Learners: Saying Why You Choose to Eat Something
Learn to use je choisis de manger… parce que… to explain food choices in French, with reasons, not just needs.

In this lesson you will learn a precise French pattern for explaining a food choice: je choisis de manger… parce que…, meaning 'I choose to eat… because…'. This is different from saying what you need or want. The focus is on giving a reason. You will practise the verb choisir, the preposition de before a second verb, and parce que to introduce a reason. All examples use standard contemporary French, with notes on register and regional variation where relevant.
By the end, you can…
- say what I choose to eat using je choisis de manger…
- give a simple reason with parce que…
- ask someone why they choose a particular food
- distinguish choosing from needing or wanting
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

Je choisis de manger des légumes.
I choose to eat vegetables.
zhuh shwah-zee duh mahn-zhay day lay-gyoom
Standard pattern. Choisir is followed by de + infinitive when the subject is the same.
Je choisis de manger du poisson parce que c'est léger.
I choose to eat fish because it is light.
zhuh shwah-zee duh mahn-zhay dew pwah-son par-suh kuh say lay-zhay
Parce que introduces a reason. C'est léger is a common way to describe food as light.
Pourquoi est-ce que tu choisis de manger végétarien ?
Why do you choose to eat vegetarian?
poor-kwah ess-kuh tew shwah-zee duh mahn-zhay vay-zhay-tah-ryen
A direct question. Végétarien is an adjective used after manger; it does not change for a male speaker.
Je choisis de ne pas manger de viande parce que je préfère les légumes.
I choose not to eat meat because I prefer vegetables.
zhuh shwah-zee duh nuh pah mahn-zhay duh vyahnd par-suh zhuh pray-fair lay lay-gyoom
Negation wraps the infinitive: ne pas manger. De viande is used after a negative.
Elle choisit de manger bio parce qu'elle fait attention à sa santé.
She chooses to eat organic because she pays attention to her health.
ell shwah-zee duh mahn-zhay byoh par-suh kell fay tah-tahn-syon ah sah sahn-tay
Third-person form choisit. Bio is invariable in this use. Faire attention à means to pay attention to.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.
Make it make sense
Useful pattern
The core pattern is je choisis de + infinitive + parce que + reason. Choisir is a regular -ir verb: je choisis, tu choisis, il/elle choisit, nous choisissons, vous choisissez, ils/elles choisissent. When the same person performs both actions, French uses de before the second verb: je choisis de manger, not je choisis manger. To give a reason, use parce que followed by a full clause: je choisis de manger du riz parce que c'est facile à préparer. You can also use parce qu' before a vowel sound: parce qu'il est tard.
When to use it
Use this pattern when you want to explain a decision, not a need or a simple preference. Compare je dois manger (I must eat), je veux manger (I want to eat), and je choisis de manger (I choose to eat). The choice pattern invites a reason, so it often appears with parce que, car, or c'est pour ça que. In conversation, parce que is the most common. In more formal writing, car can replace parce que. In Quebec and in many informal contexts, parce que is often reduced to parce qu' or even pcq in text messages, but learners should use the full form in speech.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

He chooses to eat a balanced diet because he does sport.eel shwah-zee duh mahn-zhay ay-kee-lee-bray par-suh eel fay dew sporA little context goes a long way
In France, food choices are often discussed in terms of quality, seasonality, and pleasure, and explaining a choice with parce que is normal in everyday conversation. In Quebec, bio and local are also common reasons. Vegetarianism is understood, but the word végétarien is used for the person and the diet; végétalien means vegan. Avoid assuming that all French speakers share the same food habits; reasons vary by region and generation.
One thing to watch for
Je choisis manger des légumes parce que c'est sain.
Try this instead: Je choisis de manger des légumes parce que c'est sain. The verb choisir needs de before a following infinitive when the subject is the same. Without de, the sentence sounds incomplete in standard French.
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1How do you say 'I choose to eat fruit because it is good for health'?

Je choisis de manger des fruits parce que c'est bon pour la santé.

2Change 'je choisis de manger' to 'she chooses to eat'.

Elle choisit de manger.
Choisir is an -ir verb; the third-person singular form is choisit. The de + infinitive stays the same.
3Ask a friend why they choose to eat organic.

Pourquoi est-ce que tu choisis de manger bio ?
This uses the question form pourquoi est-ce que + subject + verb. Tu choisis is the informal second-person singular. Vous choisissez would be more formal.
Use je choisis de manger… parce que… to explain a food choice with a reason. Remember de before the infinitive and parce que before the reason.
