Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A warm illustrated language study space

At a repair café, you often need to explain not just that a device is broken, but when and where it gets warm. French has several natural ways to describe this. The most common everyday expression is ça chauffe, which means it heats up or it gets hot. A slightly more precise alternative is ça devient chaud, which focuses on the change from cool to warm. You will also need time expressions to say when this happens: après quelques minutes, pendant la charge, or au bout de dix minutes. This lesson gives you reusable patterns to describe the timing and location of the warmth, so you can explain the problem clearly to a volunteer without overstating it.

    By the end, you can…

    • say that a device gets warm using ça chauffe and ça devient chaud.
    • describe when it gets warm with après, pendant, and au bout de.
    • ask a repair café volunteer where the warmth is coming from.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

Ça chauffe au bout de dix minutes.

It gets warm after ten minutes.

sah shohf oh boo duh dee mee-noot

Use au bout de to mean after a period of time has passed. This is neutral and common in everyday speech.

Ça devient chaud pendant la charge.

    It becomes warm during charging.

sah duh-vyan shoh pahn-dahn lah sharzh

Devenir chaud emphasizes the change from cool to warm. Pendant means during an activity or process.

Après quelques minutes, ça chauffe près du port.

After a few minutes, it gets warm near the port.

ah-pray kel-kuh mee-noot, sah shohf preh doo por

Après means after. Use près de to say near a specific part of the device.

Est-ce que c'est normal que ça chauffe comme ça ?

Is it normal for it to get warm like that?

ess-kuh say nor-mal kuh sah shohf kum sah

A polite question to ask staff without assuming there is a fault. The tone is cautious and open.

La chaleur vient surtout du côté de la batterie.

The heat comes mainly from the battery side.

    lah shah-lur vyan sur-too doo ko-tay duh lah bah-tuh-ree

Use this to specify the location of the warmth. Surtout means mainly or especially.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The core pattern is ça + verb + time expression. Ça chauffe is the most natural way to say it gets hot or it heats up. Ça devient chaud is slightly more formal and describes the transition. You can add a time phrase at the beginning or end: Après cinq minutes, ça chauffe. Ça chauffe au bout de cinq minutes. Pendant l'utilisation, ça devient chaud. Note that chaud is an adjective and chauffer is a verb. Both are common, but ça chauffe is more conversational.

    When to use it

Use ça chauffe when you want to state the problem simply. Use ça devient chaud when you want to emphasize that it starts cool and then changes. Use au bout de when you mean after a delay, and après when you mean after an event or action. Pendant is for something happening at the same time as another activity, like pendant la charge or pendant l'utilisation. If you are not sure, start with Ça chauffe après quelques minutes. That is clear and natural.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

Bonjour, mon ordinateur portable chauffe beaucoup. Ça devient chaud au bout de dix minutes.

Hello, my laptop gets very warm. It becomes warm after ten minutes.bon-zhoor, mon nor-dee-na-tur por-tabl shohf bo-koo. sah duh-vyan shoh oh boo duh dee mee-noot
    B

D'accord. Est-ce que ça chauffe pendant la charge ou pendant l'utilisation ?

Okay. Does it get warm during charging or during use?da-kor. ess-kuh sah shohf pahn-dahn lah sharzh oo pahn-dahn loo-tee-lee-zah-syon
    A

Surtout pendant la charge. Après vingt minutes, c'est vraiment chaud près du port.

Mainly during charging. After twenty minutes, it is really warm near the port.sur-too pahn-dahn lah sharzh. ah-pray van mee-noot, say vray-mahn shoh preh doo por
    B

Merci. Je vais regarder. Est-ce que ça chauffe aussi quand il est éteint ?

Thank you. I will take a look. Does it also get warm when it is turned off?mer-see. zhuh vay ruh-gar-day. ess-kuh sah shohf oh-see kahn eel ay tay-tan

A little context goes a long way

In French repair cafés, volunteers often use tu with regulars but vous with newcomers. Start with vous unless invited to switch. Ça chauffe is informal but not rude; in a more formal setting, you might say cela chauffe or l'appareil chauffe. Avoid saying c'est chaud for a device; that usually means it is difficult or risky. Stick to ça chauffe or ça devient chaud for physical warmth.

    One thing to watch for

Using c'est chaud to mean the device is warm.

Try this instead: C'est chaud usually means it is hot in a general sense or it is difficult. For a device, say ça chauffe or l'appareil devient chaud. Example: Mon téléphone chauffe après dix minutes, not Mon téléphone est chaud.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How would you say 'It gets warm after five minutes' using au bout de?

    Show a sample answer

Ça chauffe au bout de cinq minutes.

Au bout de introduces a time period after which something happens. Cinq minutes is the duration. You could also say Après cinq minutes, ça chauffe, which is equally correct.

2Which expression emphasizes the change from cool to warm?

    Show a sample answer

    Ça devient chaud.

Devenir means to become, so ça devient chaud highlights the transition. Ça chauffe is more about the action of heating. Both are valid depending on what you want to stress.

3Ask a volunteer if it is normal for the device to get warm during charging.

    Show a sample answer

Est-ce que c'est normal que ça chauffe pendant la charge ?

This uses pendant la charge for during charging and the polite question form est-ce que. You could also ask Est-ce que c'est normal que ça devienne chaud pendant la charge ?

    Take this with you

Use ça chauffe for everyday descriptions and ça devient chaud to stress the change. Add time with après, pendant, or au bout de. Ask staff with Est-ce que c'est normal que ça chauffe ? and specify location with près de or du côté de.
