French for Beginners: Asking How Someone Feels and Responding with Empathy

Learn to ask 'Ça va ?', 'Tu vas bien ?' and respond with empathy in everyday French conversation.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A warm illustrated language study space

In French, asking how someone feels is a core social skill. The most common question is 'Ça va ?' (How are you? / Are you okay?). You can make it more specific with 'Tu vas bien ?' (Are you doing well?) or 'Comment tu te sens ?' (How do you feel?). This lesson teaches you to ask, answer, and respond with empathy. You will learn the difference between casual and polite forms, and how to react when someone says they are stressed or tired.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask someone how they feel using 'Ça va ?', 'Tu vas bien ?', and 'Comment tu te sens ?'.
    • respond with empathy using phrases like 'Je comprends' and 'Ça va aller'.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    Ça va ?

How are you? / Are you okay?

    sa va

The most common informal question. Use with friends, family, and people your age. The 'ç' sounds like 's'.

    Tu vas bien ?

Are you doing well? / Are you okay?

    tü vah byɛ̃

A bit more specific than 'Ça va ?'. It often shows concern. Use with 'tu' (informal singular).

    Comment tu te sens ?

    How do you feel?

    kɔ-mɑ̃ tü tə sɑ̃

Asks about emotional or physical state. More personal. Use when you want a sincere answer.

    Je suis un peu stressé.

    I'm a bit stressed.

    zhü swee œ̃ pø stʁɛ-se

Masculine form. Feminine: 'stressée' (stress-ay). Use 'un peu' to soften.

    Je comprends.

    I understand.

    zhü kɔ̃-pʁɑ̃

A simple empathy phrase. Shows you are listening. Use in both formal and informal contexts.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

To ask how someone feels, use 'Ça va ?' or 'Tu vas bien ?'. The response often starts with 'Ça va' or 'Je vais'. For example: 'Ça va ?' — 'Ça va bien, merci.' (I'm fine, thanks.) Or 'Tu vas bien ?' — 'Non, je suis fatigué.' (No, I'm tired.) To ask more specifically, use 'Comment tu te sens ?' — 'Je me sens stressé.' (I feel stressed.) Notice that 'se sentir' (to feel) is a reflexive verb: 'je me sens', 'tu te sens'.

    When to use it

Use 'Ça va ?' with friends, family, and acquaintances. It is informal but very common. Use 'Comment allez-vous ?' with strangers, elders, or in professional settings (formal 'vous'). If someone says they are stressed, respond with empathy: 'Je comprends.' or 'Ça va aller.' (It will be okay.) Avoid 'Ça va ?' with a boss unless you have a friendly relationship; use 'Comment allez-vous ?' instead.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    Salut, ça va ?

Hi, how are you?sa-lü, sa va
    B

Ça va, merci. Et toi ?

    I'm fine, thanks. And you?sa va, mɛʁ-si. e twa
    A

    Je suis un peu stressé.

    I'm a bit stressed.zhü swee œ̃ pø stʁɛ-se
    B

    Je comprends. Ça va aller.

I understand. It will be okay.zhü kɔ̃-pʁɑ̃. sa va a-le

A little context goes a long way

In France, 'Ça va ?' is often used as a greeting, not just a real question. A short 'Ça va' is enough. If you want a real answer, ask 'Comment tu te sens ?' or 'Tu vas bien ?'. In formal situations, use 'Comment allez-vous ?' and expect a brief polite answer. In Quebec, 'Ça va ?' is also common, but you may hear 'Comment ça va ?' more often.

    One thing to watch for

Using 'Comment allez-vous ?' with a close friend.

Try this instead: With friends, use 'Ça va ?' or 'Tu vas bien ?'. 'Comment allez-vous ?' is formal and can sound distant. For example, say 'Salut, ça va ?' to a friend, not 'Bonjour, comment allez-vous ?'.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you ask a friend 'Are you okay?' in informal French?

    Show a sample answer

    Ça va ?

'Ça va ?' is the standard informal way. 'Tu vas bien ?' is also correct and shows a bit more concern.

2Someone says 'Je suis stressé.' What empathetic phrase can you use?

    Show a sample answer

    Je comprends.

'Je comprends' means 'I understand' and shows empathy. 'Ça va aller' (It will be okay) is another valid response.

3How do you ask 'How do you feel?' using 'tu'?

    Show a sample answer

    Comment tu te sens ?

This uses the reflexive verb 'se sentir'. 'Comment te sens-tu ?' is a more formal alternative with inversion.

    Take this with you

Use 'Ça va ?' for casual check-ins, 'Tu vas bien ?' to show concern, and 'Comment tu te sens ?' for deeper questions. Respond with 'Je comprends' or 'Ça va aller' to show empathy.
