French for Bike Repairs: Asking for a Quote Before You Agree

Learn to request a devis at a French bike shop, understand the cost breakdown, and ask which repairs are essential before you authorize any work.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.

At a French bike shop, staff may start diagnosing your bike and then hand you a bill you did not expect. The key word is devis: a written or spoken estimate given before work begins. In this lesson you will learn to ask for a devis, to request a breakdown of parts and labour, and to separate what is essential from what is optional. The register is polite and businesslike, the kind you would use with a shop assistant you have just met. You will practise full sentences, not isolated words, so you can use them immediately at the counter.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask a French bike shop for a devis before authorizing any repair.
    • ask for a breakdown of parts and labour costs.
    • ask which repairs are essential and which are optional.
    • politely decline optional work and confirm what I have authorized.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

Can you give me a quote before repairing anything?

    poo-vay-voo muh fair uhn duh-VEE ah-vahn duh ray-pah-RAY

The core request. Use it as soon as you describe the problem, before the mechanic starts work.

Can I have the breakdown of parts and labour?

ess-kuh zhuh puh ah-vwahr luh day-TYE day pyess ay duh la man-DUHRV

Main-d'œuvre means labour. Asking for le détail separates parts from labour charges.

What is essential, and what can wait?

    kess-kee ay tɛ̃-dee-spahn-SAHBL, ay kess-kee puh tah-TAHNDR

Use this to sort safety-critical repairs from optional ones. Indispensable is stronger than nécessaire.

For now, I'm only having the essential work done.

poor lɛ̃-STAHN, zhuh nuh fay kuh luh nay-say-SAIR

A polite way to limit the job without rejecting the shop's advice outright.

So, if I understand correctly, what does the total come to?

    donk, see zhuh kɔ̃-PRAHN byɛ̃, luh toh-TAL say-LEV ah kɔ̃-BYɛ̃

Confirms the figure before you agree. S'élever à is the standard verb for a total amount.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The structure Pouvez-vous me faire un devis avant de réparer ? combines a polite question (Pouvez-vous...) with an infinitive (me faire) and a time clause (avant de + infinitive). You can reuse the frame with other verbs: Pouvez-vous me montrer le devis avant de commander les pièces ? (Can you show me the quote before ordering the parts?) or Pouvez-vous me prévenir avant de commencer ? (Can you let me know before starting?). Note that avant de is always followed by the infinitive, never by a conjugated verb.

    When to use it

Use these phrases at the moment you hand over the bike or when the mechanic calls with a diagnosis. French shops often give an oral estimate first; if you want it in writing, say Est-ce que vous pouvez me l'envoyer par écrit ? (Can you send it to me in writing?). If the estimate changes during the job, the shop should contact you: On vous appelle si le devis change (We'll call you if the quote changes). Keep the exchange factual and polite; vous is expected with staff you do not know.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

Hello, my rear wheel is buckled and the brakes are squeaking. Can you give me a quote before repairing anything?bɔ̃-ZHOOR, mah roo ah-RYAIR ay vwah-LAY ay lay frɛ̃ greenss. poo-vay-voo muh fair uhn duh-VEE ah-vahn duh ray-pah-RAY
    B

Of course. The wheel needs truing and the brake pads need changing. I can give you a quote, but you'll have to leave the bike for an hour.byɛ̃ SOOR. eel foh ruh-dress-AY la roo ay shahn-ZHAY lay pah-Tɛ̃. zhuh puh voo fair uhn duh-VEE, may eel foh less-AY luh vay-LO ewn UHR

D'accord.

All right. Can I have the breakdown of parts and labour? And what is essential?dah-KOR. ess-kuh zhuh puh ah-vwahr luh day-TYE day pyess ay duh la man-DUHRV? ay kess-kee ay tɛ̃-dee-spahn-SAHBL
    B

The wheel is essential to ride safely. The pads are recommended, but they can wait a month.la roo, say tɛ̃-dee-spahn-SAHBL poor roo-LAY ahn say-kyoo-ree-TAY. lay pah-Tɛ̃, say kɔ̃-say-YAY, may sah puh tah-TAHNDR uhn mwah

A little context goes a long way

In France, a devis is a normal part of consumer transactions, not a sign of distrust. Shops may charge for a detailed written estimate, and a verbal estimate is common for small jobs. Using vous and bonjour on entering is expected; starting with the problem rather than the price is also normal. If you need time to decide, dites Je vais réfléchir, je vous rappelle (I'll think about it, I'll call you back).

    One thing to watch for

Translating 'Can you estimate?' as Pouvez-vous estimer ? and expecting a price quote.

Try this instead: Estimer means to estimate a value or quantity, not to give a repair quote. For a repair estimate, use devis: Pouvez-vous me faire un devis ? If you want a rough idea only, ask Vous avez une idée du prix ? (Do you have an idea of the price?).

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1You want the shop to quote before touching the bike. What do you say?

    Show a sample answer

Est-ce que vous pouvez me faire un devis ? is equally correct and slightly more informal.

2The mechanic lists several jobs. How do you ask which ones are essential?

    Show a sample answer

This separates safety-critical work from optional work. Qu'est-ce qui est obligatoire ? also works, though obligatoire can sound more legal than practical.

3You want to see parts and labour listed separately. What do you ask?

    Show a sample answer

Le détail asks for an itemized breakdown. You could also say le prix des pièces et le prix de la main-d'œuvre, which is more explicit but longer.

    Take this with you

Ask for a devis before any repair, request le détail des pièces et de la main-d'œuvre, and use indispensable versus peut attendre to keep the job within your budget.
