Learn to ask 'Are pets allowed?' in French, understand common pet restrictions in rentals, and use polite, natural phrasing for landlords and agencies.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.

When you rent a home in a French-speaking area, pet rules are often set by the landlord, the building, or the lease itself. The key question is whether animals are accepted, and the most useful phrase is 'Les animaux sont-ils acceptés ?' This lesson teaches you to ask that question clearly, to check whether there are restrictions, and to respond politely when the answer is no. You will also learn the difference between a general question and a specific request about your own pet.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask whether pets are allowed in a rental.
    • ask about pet restrictions and understand a simple answer.
    • say what kind of pet I have and ask if it is accepted.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Les animaux sont-ils acceptés ?

    Are pets allowed?

    lay zah-nee-moh son-teel tak-sep-tay

Standard, polite written and spoken question. Use it with a landlord or agency when you do not yet know the policy.

Est-ce que les animaux sont acceptés ?

    Are pets allowed?

    ess-kuh lay zah-nee-moh son tak-sep-tay

More common in everyday speech. The meaning is the same as 'Les animaux sont-ils acceptés ?' but the word order is simpler.

    J'ai un chat. Est-ce qu'il est accepté ?

I have a cat. Is it allowed?

zhay un shah. ess-keel ay tak-sep-tay

Use this when you want to ask about one specific pet instead of pets in general.

Y a-t-il des restrictions pour les animaux ?

Are there any restrictions for pets?

    ee ah-teel day res-treeks-yon poor lay zah-nee-moh

Useful when the answer to the first question is yes but you need details, such as size or number of animals.

Les animaux ne sont pas autorisés.

    Pets are not allowed.

lay zah-nee-moh nuh son pah oh-toh-ree-zay

A clear negative answer. In many leases, 'autorisés' and 'acceptés' are used in similar ways, but 'autorisés' often sounds more official.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

To ask a yes/no question politely, French often uses 'Est-ce que...' before a normal sentence: 'Est-ce que les animaux sont acceptés ?' You can also invert the subject and verb: 'Les animaux sont-ils acceptés ?' Both are correct. The inverted form is common in writing and in careful speech; the 'Est-ce que' form is more common in conversation. To ask about one animal, use 'Est-ce qu'il est accepté ?' for a male noun such as 'un chat' or 'Est-ce qu'elle est acceptée ?' for a female noun such as 'une chienne'.

    When to use it

Use 'Les animaux sont-ils acceptés ?' when you are asking about the general policy before mentioning your own pet. Use 'J'ai un chat. Est-ce qu'il est accepté ?' when you already know the landlord may consider individual cases. If the answer is 'Oui, mais...', ask 'Quelles sont les restrictions ?' to get details. Landlords may mention 'un animal de petite taille' (a small animal), 'un chien de catégorie' (a category dog, which may be restricted), or 'une caution supplémentaire' (an extra deposit). Always confirm the rule in the lease, because a verbal answer may not be the final policy.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

A little context goes a long way

In France, rental ads often use 'animaux acceptés' or 'animaux non acceptés'. The rule can come from the landlord, the building's internal rules, or the lease. In Belgium, Switzerland, and Quebec, the same phrases are generally understood, but local lease rules and tenant protections differ. Keep your question polite and factual, and ask for the policy in writing if possible.

    One thing to watch for

Saying 'Les animaux sont acceptés ?' with a rising tone as a yes/no question in every situation.

Try this instead: This can sound like a statement with a question tone. For a clear, polite question, use 'Est-ce que les animaux sont acceptés ?' or 'Les animaux sont-ils acceptés ?' Example: 'Est-ce que les animaux sont acceptés dans cet appartement ?'

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you ask 'Are pets allowed?' in a polite, written-style French question?

    Show a sample answer

    Les animaux sont-ils acceptés ?

This uses inversion, which is correct and polite. 'Est-ce que les animaux sont acceptés ?' is also correct and more common in speech.

2You have a cat. Ask whether it is allowed.

    Show a sample answer

    J'ai un chat. Est-ce qu'il est accepté ?

'Chat' is masculine, so 'il' is used. If you had a female dog, you would say 'J'ai une chienne. Est-ce qu'elle est acceptée ?'.

3The landlord says pets are not allowed. What phrase means 'Pets are not allowed'?

    Show a sample answer

Les animaux ne sont pas autorisés.

This is a standard negative statement. 'Les animaux ne sont pas acceptés' is also possible, but 'autorisés' often sounds more official in lease language.

    Take this with you

Ask 'Est-ce que les animaux sont acceptés ?' first, then ask about restrictions or your specific pet. Confirm the final rule in the lease or in writing.
