Chinese for Secondhand Yarn: Asking About Dye Lots and Color Consistency

Learn to ask about dye lots (批号), same batch (同一批), and color difference (色差) when buying secondhand yarn. Build practical questions for knitting group exchanges.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A quiet illustrated scene for evening language practice

When you buy yarn secondhand, whether from a knitting group member or a small online seller, one of the most important details is the dye lot. Yarn from different dye lots can look slightly different, and if you run out mid-project, matching becomes a problem. In Chinese, the key terms are 批号 (dye lot number), 同一批 (same batch), and 色差 (color difference). This lesson teaches you how to ask about these clearly and politely, so you can check before you commit. You will learn reusable sentence patterns to ask if yarn is from the same dye lot, to describe color difference, and to confirm quantity. The focus is on spoken Mandarin for crafty conversations, not on reading labels or technical jargon. By the end, you will be able to handle a typical exchange with a seller or a knitting friend.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask whether two skeins of yarn are from the same dye lot.
    • describe a color difference between yarns using 色差.
    • confirm the dye lot number and quantity before buying.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    这团线的批号是多少?

What is the dye lot number of this skein of yarn?

Zhè tuán xiàn de pīhào shì duōshao?

批号 is a batch number. On yarn labels, dye-lot information may also be labeled 缸号; ask which number identifies the dyeing batch. 色号 identifies a color, so a matching color number alone does not establish a matching dye lot.

    这两团是同一批吗?

Are these two skeins from the same batch?

Zhè liǎng tuán shì tóngyī pī ma?

Ask this when you are holding two skeins and want to know if they share the same dye lot. 同一批 means 'same batch'.

    颜色有差别吗?

    Is there any color difference?

    Yánsè yǒu chābié ma?

A simple way to ask about color difference. You can also use 色差 (sèchā) for 'color difference' in a more specific question.

    有色差吗?

    Is there a color difference?

    Yǒu sèchā ma?

Direct and common. Use 色差 when you want to sound precise about color variation between skeins.

    我要织一件毛衣,需要同一批的线。

I want to knit a sweater, so I need yarn from the same batch.

Wǒ yào zhī yī jiàn máoyī, xūyào tóngyī pī de xiàn.

Explain your project to justify why you need same-batch yarn. 织 (zhī) means 'to knit'.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The pattern '是同一批吗?' (shì tóngyī pī ma?) is your core question for checking dye lots. You can use it with any two items: 这两团是同一批吗? (Are these two skeins the same batch?) or 这些是同一批吗? (Are these the same batch?). To ask about the dye lot number, use '批号是多少?' (pīhào shì duōshao?). For color difference, '有色差吗?' (yǒu sèchā ma?) is short and clear. If you want to be more specific, say '这两团有色差吗?' (Do these two skeins have a color difference?). Notice that Chinese does not change the verb for plural; 是 stays the same whether you talk about one skein or many.

    When to use it

Use these questions when you are inspecting yarn in person or chatting online. In a knitting group, you might say: '我想买这两团,但是它们有色差吗?' (I want to buy these two skeins, but do they have a color difference?). If the seller says '是同一批' (they are the same batch), you can follow up with '批号一样吗?' (Is the dye lot number the same?). When you need more than what is available, ask '你还有同一批的吗?' (Do you have more from the same batch?). These patterns work in casual conversation and show you know what matters for a project.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    你好,我想买这两团线。它们是同一批吗?

Hi, I'd like to buy these two skeins. Are they from the same batch?Nǐ hǎo, wǒ xiǎng mǎi zhè liǎng tuán xiàn. Tāmen shì tóngyī pī ma?
    B

    我看看……批号不一样。这一团是 23,那一团是 24。

Let me check... The dye lot numbers are different. This one is 23, that one is 24.Wǒ kàn kan... pīhào bù yīyàng. Zhè yī tuán shì èrshísān, nà yī tuán shì èrshísì.
    A

    那有色差吗?我想织一件毛衣,怕颜色不一样。

Is there a color difference then? I want to knit a sweater, and I'm worried the colors won't match.Nà yǒu sèchā ma? Wǒ xiǎng zhī yī jiàn máoyī, pà yánsè bù yīyàng.
    B

    有一点色差,但是织在一起不太明显。你要同一批的话,我下周还有。

There is a slight color difference, but it's not very noticeable when knitted together. If you want the same batch, I'll have more next week.Yǒu yīdiǎn sèchā, dànshì zhī zài yīqǐ bù tài míngxiǎn. Nǐ yào tóngyī pī de huà, wǒ xià zhōu hái yǒu.

A little context goes a long way

In Chinese knitting and craft circles, asking about dye lots is normal and shows you are serious about your project. Sellers in secondhand markets or group chats may not always have the label, so it is fine to ask them to check the number on the yarn band. Politeness matters: use 请问 (qǐngwèn, 'may I ask') before a direct question, and say 谢谢 (xièxie) after. If the seller is a hobbyist, they may appreciate your attention to detail. Avoid assuming they can guarantee matching; instead, ask what they have and decide together.

    One thing to watch for

Using 色差 to mean 'color' in general, as in '这个色差很好看' (This color difference is pretty).

Try this instead: 色差 specifically means 'color difference' or 'color deviation', not just 'color'. To talk about a color you like, say 颜色 (yánsè): '这个颜色很好看' (This color is pretty). Use 色差 only when comparing two things, for example: '这两团线有色差' (These two skeins have a color difference).

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How would you ask a seller if two skeins are from the same dye lot?

    Show a sample answer

    这两团是同一批吗?

This directly asks about same batch. You could also say 这两团的批号一样吗? (Are the dye lot numbers of these two skeins the same?), which is equally correct.

2What does 色差 mean, and how would you ask if there is a color difference?

    Show a sample answer

色差 means 'color difference'. Ask: 有色差吗?

有色差吗? is a simple yes/no question. You can also ask 这两团有色差吗? to specify which items.

3You need more yarn for your project. How do you ask if the seller has more from the same batch?

    Show a sample answer

    你还有同一批的吗?

This asks if they have more from the same batch. Another way: 同一批的还有吗? Both are natural and polite.

    Take this with you

When buying secondhand yarn, always ask 是同一批吗? and check the 批号. If there is a 色差, decide if it matters for your project. These three terms will help you avoid mismatched skeins.
