Chinese Lesson: Connecting Ideas with 所以 (suǒyǐ) 'so' and 因为 (yīnwèi) 'because'

Learn to express cause and result in Mandarin using 因为 (yīnwèi) 'because' and 所以 (suǒyǐ) 'so'. Practice forming sentences like 'It rained, so we stayed home.'

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A warm illustrated language study space

In Mandarin, to connect ideas showing cause and result, use 因为 (yīnwèi) meaning 'because' and 所以 (suǒyǐ) meaning 'so'. These words differ from 和 (hé) 'and', 但是 (dànshì) 'but', or 或者 (huòzhě) 'or' because they specifically link a reason to its outcome. For example, 'It rained, so we stayed home' becomes 下雨了,所以我们待在家里 (Xià yǔ le, suǒyǐ wǒmen dāi zài jiālǐ). You can use either 因为 or 所以 alone, or both together for clarity. This lesson teaches you to form such sentences accurately at an elementary level.

    By the end, you can…

    • use 因为 (yīnwèi) to give a reason.
    • use 所以 (suǒyǐ) to state a result.
    • combine 因为 and 所以 in one sentence to show cause and effect.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    因为下雨,所以我没去。

Because it rained, I didn't go.

Yīnwèi xià yǔ, suǒyǐ wǒ méi qù.

Standard pattern: 因为 + reason, 所以 + result. Use for past events.

    我累了,所以想休息。

I'm tired, so I want to rest.

Wǒ lèi le, suǒyǐ xiǎng xiūxi.

Using 所以 alone to state result; reason implied by context.

    因为太贵,我没买。

Because it was too expensive, I didn't buy it.

Yīnwèi tài guì, wǒ méi mǎi.

Using 因为 alone to give reason; result follows without 所以.

    他生病了,所以没来上课。

He was sick, so he didn't come to class.

Tā shēngbìng le, suǒyǐ méi lái shàngkè.

所以 connects a cause (illness) to a result (absence).

    因为堵车,所以我迟到了。

Because of a traffic jam, I was late.

Yīnwèi dǔchē, suǒyǐ wǒ chídào le.

Common in daily conversations about delays.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The core pattern is: 因为 + Reason, 所以 + Result. For example, 因为下雨,所以我们待在家里 (Yīnwèi xià yǔ, suǒyǐ wǒmen dāi zài jiālǐ) 'Because it rained, we stayed home.' You can also omit one part: 下雨了,所以我们待在家里 (Xià yǔ le, suǒyǐ wǒmen dāi zài jiālǐ) or 因为下雨,我们待在家里 (Yīnwèi xià yǔ, wǒmen dāi zài jiālǐ). Both are correct. Note that 因为 and 所以 are conjunctions that link clauses; when the two clauses share the same subject, the subject usually appears only once, before 因为. For example, 我因为累了,所以我休息 (Wǒ yīnwèi lèi le, suǒyǐ wǒ xiūxi) is less common; usually, the subject is stated once: 我累了,所以休息 (Wǒ lèi le, suǒyǐ xiūxi).

    When to use it

Use 因为 and 所以 to explain reasons and outcomes in everyday situations: apologizing (因为堵车,我迟到了 - Yīnwèi dǔchē, wǒ chídào le), making excuses (因为不舒服,所以没去 - Yīnwèi bù shūfu, suǒyǐ méi qù), or narrating events (因为下雨,比赛取消了 - Yīnwèi xià yǔ, bǐsài qǔxiāo le). In formal writing, 因此 (yīncǐ) can replace 所以, but at elementary level, stick to 所以. Avoid using 因为 and 所以 with 和 (hé) or 但是 (dànshì) in the same clause; they serve different functions.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    你今天怎么没来?

Why didn't you come today?Nǐ jīntiān zěnme méi lái?
    B

    因为我生病了,所以在家休息。

Because I was sick, I rested at home.Yīnwèi wǒ shēngbìng le, suǒyǐ zài jiā xiūxi.
    A

    现在好点了吗?

Are you feeling better now?Xiànzài hǎo diǎn le ma?
    B

    好多了,因为吃了药,所以不难受了。

Much better; because I took medicine, I don't feel bad anymore.Hǎo duō le, yīnwèi chī le yào, suǒyǐ bù nánshòu le.

A little context goes a long way

In Chinese, using both 因为 and 所以 in one sentence is common and not considered redundant, unlike English where 'because...so' is often seen as redundant. However, in formal writing, you might use 由于 (yóuyú) for 'due to' and 因此 (yīncǐ) for 'therefore'. In casual speech, 所以 is frequently used alone to mean 'so' without 因为, especially when the reason is obvious from context.

    One thing to watch for

Placing 因为 after the subject in the result clause, as in 我因为下雨,所以没去 (Wǒ yīnwèi xià yǔ, suǒyǐ méi qù).

Try this instead: 因为 introduces the reason, so it should come before the reason clause. The correct order is 因为下雨,所以我没去 (Yīnwèi xià yǔ, suǒyǐ wǒ méi qù). If the subject is the same in both clauses, it typically appears before 因为: 我因为下雨没去 (Wǒ yīnwèi xià yǔ méi qù), but this is less common than the full pattern.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

    1Translate: 'I was busy, so I didn't call you.'

    Show a sample answer

我很忙,所以没给你打电话。 (Wǒ hěn máng, suǒyǐ méi gěi nǐ dǎ diànhuà.)

This uses 所以 to connect the cause (being busy) to the result (not calling). You could also say 因为我很忙,所以没给你打电话 (Yīnwèi wǒ hěn máng, suǒyǐ méi gěi nǐ dǎ diànhuà), which is equally correct.

2Fill in the blank: 因为下雨,____ 我们没去公园。 (Yīnwèi xià yǔ, ____ wǒmen méi qù gōngyuán.)

    Show a sample answer

    所以 (suǒyǐ)

所以 is needed to introduce the result clause. Omitting it would make the sentence two separate clauses without a clear connector, though in casual speech it might be dropped.

3Is this sentence correct? 因为太贵,所以我不买。 (Yīnwèi tài guì, suǒyǐ wǒ bù mǎi.)

    Show a sample answer

    Yes, it is correct.

This follows the standard 因为...所以... pattern. It means 'Because it's too expensive, I'm not buying it.' You could also omit 所以: 因为太贵,我不买。

    Take this with you

Use 因为 (yīnwèi) to give a reason and 所以 (suǒyǐ) to state a result. They can be used together or separately. Remember: reason first with 因为, result second with 所以.
