When you want to add information in Mandarin Chinese, you cannot simply translate 'furthermore' or 'in addition' with one word. Chinese uses a set of connectors—而且 (érqiě), 并且 (bìngqiě), 还 (hái), 也 (yě), and 又 (yǒu)—each with its own nuance and placement. This lesson teaches you how to use them correctly to link clauses and add ideas smoothly. You will learn the difference between 而且 and 并且, when to use 还 versus 也, and how 又 adds a second quality. By the end, you will be able to combine sentences like a native speaker, avoiding common errors such as overusing 和 (hé) to connect clauses.

    By the end, you can…

    • use 而且 and 并且 to add a second clause with a similar meaning.
    • use 还 and 也 to add information about the same subject.
    • use 又 to add a second adjective or quality to a description.
    • avoid common mistakes like using 和 to connect full clauses.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    他会说汉语,而且说得很好。

He can speak Chinese, and he speaks it very well.

Tā huì shuō Hànyǔ, érqiě shuō de hěn hǎo.

而且 (érqiě) adds a clause that reinforces or extends the first. It often implies 'and moreover' and is common in both speech and writing.

    她喜欢唱歌,并且经常参加比赛。

She likes singing, and she often takes part in competitions.

Tā xǐhuan chànggē, bìngqiě jīngcháng cānjiā bǐsài.

并且 (bìngqiě) is slightly more formal than 而且. Use it in writing or careful speech to add a parallel action or fact.

    我会去,还会带礼物。

I will go, and I will also bring a gift.

Wǒ huì qù, hái huì dài lǐwù.

还 (hái) means 'also' or 'in addition' and is placed before the verb. It often adds an extra action by the same subject.

    他是老师,也是作家。

He is a teacher and also a writer.

Tā shì lǎoshī, yě shì zuòjiā.

也 (yě) adds a second identity or quality. It is placed before the verb or adjective and is very common in everyday speech.

    这个苹果又大又甜。

This apple is both big and sweet.

Zhège píngguǒ yòu dà yòu tián.

又...又... (yòu... yòu...) adds two qualities to the same noun. It is used with adjectives and means 'both... and...'.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The most common pattern for adding a clause is: Clause 1 + 而且/并且 + Clause 2. For example, 他会说汉语,而且说得很好。 (He can speak Chinese, and he speaks it very well.) Here 而且 introduces a second clause that gives more information about the same subject. 并且 works the same way but is more formal: 她喜欢唱歌,并且经常参加比赛。 (She likes singing, and she often takes part in competitions.) For adding a verb phrase, use 还 or 也 before the verb: 我会去,还会带礼物。 (I will go, and I will also bring a gift.) 也 is similar but often implies 'also' in the sense of 'me too' or 'same here': 他是老师,也是作家。 (He is a teacher and also a writer.) Finally, to add two adjectives, use 又...又...: 这个苹果又大又甜。 (This apple is both big and sweet.)

    When to use it

Use 而且 when you want to add a clause that strengthens or extends the first idea. It is neutral and common in conversation. Use 并且 in more formal contexts, such as writing or presentations. Use 还 when you want to add an extra action by the same subject, especially after a modal verb like 会 (huì) or 想 (xiǎng): 我想去,还想买东西。 (I want to go, and I also want to buy things.) Use 也 when the added information is a parallel fact or identity, often with 是: 我是学生,也是志愿者。 (I am a student and also a volunteer.) Use 又...又... only with adjectives to describe two qualities of the same thing: 这个房间又干净又安静。 (This room is both clean and quiet.) Avoid using 和 (hé) to connect clauses; 和 only connects nouns or noun phrases, e.g., 苹果和香蕉 (apples and bananas).

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    你周末有什么计划?

What plans do you have for the weekend?Nǐ zhōumò yǒu shénme jìhuà?
    B

    我要去爬山,而且还会和朋友一起野餐。

I'm going hiking, and I will also have a picnic with friends.Wǒ yào qù páshān, érqiě hái huì hé péngyou yìqǐ yěcān.
    A

    听起来不错!我也想去,并且可以带些水果。

Sounds great! I want to go too, and I can bring some fruit.Tīng qǐlai búcuò! Wǒ yě xiǎng qù, bìngqiě kěyǐ dài xiē shuǐguǒ.
    B

    太好了!那个地方又漂亮又安静。

Great! That place is both beautiful and quiet.Tài hǎo le! Nàge dìfang yòu piàoliang yòu ānjìng.

A little context goes a long way

In Mandarin, addition connectors are often used in both spoken and written Chinese, but register matters. 而且 is common in everyday conversation, while 并且 is more formal and appears in news, essays, or business writing. 还 and 也 are extremely frequent in speech and can soften the tone. 又...又... is neutral and often used in descriptions. Unlike English, Chinese does not require a comma before the connector, but a comma can improve readability in longer sentences. Also, 也 and 还 can sometimes be used together, as in 我也还想去 (I also still want to go), but this is more advanced.

    One thing to watch for

Using 和 (hé) to connect two full clauses, as in 我喜欢唱歌和我喜欢跳舞。

Try this instead: 和 only connects nouns or noun phrases, not clauses. To connect clauses, use 而且, 并且, 还, or 也. For example: 我喜欢唱歌,而且喜欢跳舞。 (I like singing, and I like dancing.)

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1Combine the two sentences using 而且: 他会说英语。他会说法语。

    Show a sample answer

    他会说英语,而且会说法语。

而且 connects the second clause, adding information about the same subject. You could also use 并且 for a more formal tone.

2Fill in the blank with the correct connector: 我想去中国,____想吃中国菜。

    Show a sample answer

    还

还 is used before the verb to add an extra action by the same subject. 也 is possible but would emphasize 'also' more; 还 is more natural here.

3Translate into Chinese using 又...又...: 'This book is both interesting and useful.'

    Show a sample answer

    这本书又有趣又有用。

又...又... is used with adjectives to describe two qualities of the same noun. You could also say 这本书既有趣又有用, but 又...又... is more common in speech.

    Take this with you

Use 而且 or 并且 to add a clause, 还 or 也 before a verb to add an action, and 又...又... to add two adjectives. Never use 和 to connect clauses.
