Chinese Third Conditional: Talking About Unreal Past with 如果...就...

Learn to express unreal past situations in Mandarin using 如果...就... with 了 and 会. Compare with second conditional to talk about missed chances and regrets.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A warm illustrated language study space

In Mandarin, to talk about unreal past situations—what would have happened if something had been different—you use the 如果...就... structure with 了 to indicate completion and 会 to express a hypothetical result. This is different from the second conditional, which talks about unreal present or future situations. For example, 'If I had known, I would have called' becomes 如果我(当时)知道了,我就会打电话。 Notice the use of 了 after the verb to show the action was completed in the past, and 会 before the verb to show the conditional result. In this lesson, you will learn to form and use this structure accurately.

    By the end, you can…

    • form sentences about unreal past situations using 如果...就... with 了 and 会.
    • distinguish between second conditional (present/future unreal) and third conditional (past unreal) in Chinese.
    • express regrets and missed opportunities in Mandarin.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    如果我当时知道,我就会打电话。

If I had known, I would have called.

Rúguǒ wǒ dāngshí zhīdào le, wǒ jiù huì dǎ diànhuà.

Use 当时 (at that time) to make the past reference clear. The past-unreal meaning comes from the time word and the final 了, not from 了 after 知道.

    如果你早点儿告诉我,我就帮你了。

If you had told me earlier, I would have helped you.

Rúguǒ nǐ zǎodiǎnr gàosu wǒ, wǒ jiù bāng nǐ le.

The 了 at the end of the result clause marks the hypothetical result as completed and unreal.

    要是我们没迷路,我们就不会迟到了。

If we hadn't gotten lost, we wouldn't have been late.

Yàoshi wǒmen méi mílù, wǒmen jiù bú huì chídào.

要是 is a colloquial alternative to 如果. 没 is used for negation in the past.

    如果昨天没下雨,我就去公园了。

If it hadn't rained yesterday, I would have gone to the park.

Rúguǒ zuótiān méi xiàyǔ, wǒ jiù qù gōngyuán le.

The final 了 in the main clause marks the hypothetical result as completed and unreal.

    如果他来了,我就不会这么生气了。

If he had come, I wouldn't have been so angry.

Rúguǒ tā lái le, wǒ jiù bú huì zhème shēngqì le.

This expresses an unreal past condition and its result. The final 了 marks the hypothetical result as completed and unreal.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The third conditional in Mandarin typically follows this pattern: 如果 + subject + past action, subject + 就 + 会 + result + 了. For example, 如果我昨天有时间,我就会去看电影了 (If I had had time yesterday, I would have gone to see a movie). The past-unreal meaning comes from the time word (昨天, 当时, 那时候) and the final 了 in the main clause, which marks the hypothetical result as completed and unreal. The 会 in the main clause expresses the hypothetical result. You can also use 要是 instead of 如果 for a more colloquial tone. Negation in the if-clause uses 没 or 没有, as in 如果我没去 (If I hadn't gone).

    When to use it

Use this structure to talk about past situations that did not happen and their imagined results. It is common for expressing regrets, missed opportunities, or hypothetical scenarios. For example, 如果我知道你生病了,我就会去看你了 (If I had known you were sick, I would have visited you). It contrasts with the second conditional, which uses 如果 + subject + verb (without 了) + 就 + 会 + verb for present or future unreal situations, like 如果我有钱,我就去旅行 (If I had money, I would travel). To clearly indicate past time, you can add time words like 昨天 (yesterday), 当时 (at that time), or 那时候 (at that time).

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    你昨天怎么没来参加聚会?

Why didn't you come to the party yesterday?Nǐ zuótiān zěnme méi lái cānjiā jùhuì?
    B

    如果我当时知道,我就去了。

If I had known at that time, I would have gone.Rúguǒ wǒ dāngshí zhīdào le, wǒ jiù qù le.
    A

    太可惜了!如果你来了,你就会玩得很开心。

What a pity! If you had come, you would have had a great time.Tài kěxī le! Rúguǒ nǐ lái le, nǐ jiù huì wán de hěn kāixīn.
    B

    是啊,下次我一定不会错过。

Yes, I definitely won't miss it next time.Shì a, xià cì wǒ yídìng bú huì cuòguò.

A little context goes a long way

In Chinese, expressing regrets about the past is often done with a tone of acceptance rather than strong emotion. Using 如果...就... with 了 is common in both spoken and written Mandarin. However, in very formal writing, you might see 假如 or 倘若 instead of 如果. Also, the final 了 in the main clause can sometimes be omitted if the context is clear, but including it makes the past hypothetical more explicit. Be mindful that overusing 了 can sound unnatural; it's best to use it when the completion of the hypothetical result is important to the meaning.

    One thing to watch for

Forgetting to use the final 了 in the main clause to indicate a completed, unreal past result, leading to ambiguity with present/future unreal conditions. For example, saying 如果我知道,我就打电话 instead of 如果我知道,我就打电话了.

Try this instead: Include the final 了 in the main clause to clearly indicate a past unreal result. Correct: 如果我(当时)知道,我就打电话了。 Without the final 了, the sentence might be interpreted as a second conditional (present/future unreal).

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1Translate: If I had seen him, I would have said hello.

    Show a sample answer

    如果我看见他了,我就打招呼了。

This uses 如果...就... with the final 了 in the main clause to show a past unreal result. Alternatively, 要是我看见他了,我就打招呼了 is also correct.

2What is the difference between 如果我有钱,我就旅行 and 如果我有钱了,我就旅行了?

    Show a sample answer

The first is second conditional (present/future unreal: If I had money, I would travel). The second is third conditional (past unreal: If I had had money, I would have traveled).

The final 了 in the main clause indicates a completed, unreal past result, changing the meaning from present/future hypothetical to past hypothetical.

    3Fill in the blank: 如果昨天没下雨,我____去公园了。

    Show a sample answer

    就

就 is required to link the condition and result. The full sentence is 如果昨天没下雨,我就去公园了 (If it hadn't rained yesterday, I would have gone to the park).

    Take this with you

To talk about unreal past in Chinese, use 如果...就... with a past time word and often 了 at the end of the main clause. This distinguishes it from the second conditional, which lacks the final 了 and refers to present or future.
