Telling a Short Personal Story in Mandarin Chinese: Sequencing a Beginning, Middle, and End
Learn to narrate a simple personal story in Mandarin using time words and the 了 aspect marker, with a clear beginning, middle, and end.

Telling a short story about your day is one of the first real conversations you will have in Mandarin. The key skill is not fancy vocabulary; it is clear sequencing. Chinese marks time with time words such as 昨天 (zuótiān, yesterday) and 然后 (ránhòu, then), and it marks completed actions with the particle 了 (le) after the verb. In this lesson you will build a three-part story: set the scene, say what happened, and give the result. Keep sentences short. One action, one time word, one 了.
By the end, you can…
- set the scene of a short story with a time word such as 昨天 or 上个周末.
- link two or three past actions in order using 然后 and 后来.
- end a short story with a simple result or feeling.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

昨天我去了一家新饭馆。
Yesterday I went to a new restaurant.
zuótiān wǒ qùle yì jiā xīn fànguǎn
Beginning of a story. 了 after 去 marks the completed action. 一家 means 'one' for businesses.
然后我点了一个面条。
Then I ordered noodles.
ránhòu wǒ diǎnle yí ge miàntiáo
Middle of a story. 然后 moves the story forward. Use 一个 before a noun to count one item.
后来我的朋友也来了。
Later, my friend also came.
hòulái wǒ de péngyou yě láile
Later event. 后来 introduces something that happened after a gap, not immediately next.
我们一边吃一边聊天。
We ate and chatted at the same time.
wǒmen yìbiān chī yìbiān liáotiān
Describes two actions happening together. 一边...一边... needs two verb phrases.
最后我们都很开心。
In the end, we were all very happy.
zuìhòu wǒmen dōu hěn kāixīn
End of a story. 最后 signals the conclusion. 都 means 'all' and comes before 很.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.
Make it make sense
Useful pattern
The basic past-story pattern is: Time word + Subject + Verb + 了 + Object. For example, 昨天我买了一个手机 (zuótiān wǒ mǎile yí ge shǒujī, yesterday I bought a phone). The time word can also come after the subject: 我昨天买了一个手机. Both are correct. To add a second action, use 然后 (then) or 后来 (later): 然后我回家了 (ránhòu wǒ huí jiā le, then I went home). Do not put 了 on every verb. Use 了 when the action is completed and is the main event you are reporting. Stative verbs like 是 (shì, to be) and 喜欢 (xǐhuan, to like) normally do not take 了 in this pattern.
When to use it
Use this pattern when you tell a friend what you did yesterday, last weekend, or this morning. It fits spoken stories, messages, and diary entries. Start with a clear time word so the listener knows the story is in the past: 上个周末 (shàng ge zhōumò, last weekend), 昨天 (zuótiān, yesterday), 今天早上 (jīntiān zǎoshang, this morning). Then move through actions with 然后 and 后来. Finish with 最后 (zuìhòu, finally) plus a result or feeling, such as 最后我很累 (zuìhòu wǒ hěn lèi, in the end I was very tired). For a very short story, three sentences are enough: beginning, middle, end.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
你昨天做什么了?
What did you do yesterday?nǐ zuótiān zuò shénme le昨天我去了一家新饭馆。然后我点了一个面条。
Yesterday I went to a new restaurant. Then I ordered noodles.zuótiān wǒ qùle yì jiā xīn fànguǎn. ránhòu wǒ diǎnle yí ge miàntiáo后来呢?
And then what happened?hòulái ne后来我的朋友也来了。最后我们都很开心。
Later my friend also came. In the end, we were all very happy.hòulái wǒ de péngyou yě láile. zuìhòu wǒmen dōu hěn kāixīnA little context goes a long way
In everyday Mandarin conversation, listeners often show they are following your story with short responses like 哦 (ó, oh) or 然后呢? (ránhòu ne, and then?). This is friendly, not rude. When you tell a story to someone older or in a formal setting, avoid slang and keep the same clear time order. The particle 了 is common in northern speech and in standard writing; some southern speakers may use it slightly less in casual talk, but it is understood everywhere.
One thing to watch for
Putting 了 after every verb, as in 昨天我去了饭馆,点了面条了,吃了饭了。
Try this instead: Use 了 once on the main completed action, not on every verb. A natural version is 昨天我去了一家饭馆,然后点了面条 (zuótiān wǒ qù le yì jiā fànguǎn, ránhòu diǎn le miàntiáo). The second 了 is optional because 然后 already shows the sequence.
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1How do you say 'Yesterday I went to a new restaurant' in Mandarin?
Show a sample answer
昨天我去了一家新饭馆。
This uses the time word 昨天, the subject 我, the verb 去 with 了, and the object 一家新饭馆. 一家 is the correct measure word for a restaurant.
2Which word means 'later' and introduces an event after a gap?
Show a sample answer
后来 (hòulái)
后来 means 'later' and is used when some time passes before the next event. 然后 means 'then' and is used for the immediate next step. Both can be correct depending on the timing.
3Make a three-sentence story: beginning, middle, end.
Show a sample answer
上个周末我去了公园。然后我拍了很多照片。最后我很累,但是很开心。
The story has a time word, a linked action with 然后, and a conclusion with 最后. Other verbs and feelings are also correct as long as the order is clear.
For a short Mandarin story, use a time word to start, 然后 or 后来 to move forward, 了 on the main completed action, and 最后 to end with a result or feeling.
