Chinese for Beginners: Talk About Pets with 有 and 是...的人

Learn to say you have a pet, name it, and describe yourself as a dog or cat person in Mandarin. Practice a natural conversation about pets.

Two friends sharing an evening conversation

In this lesson, you will learn to talk about pets in Mandarin Chinese. You will use the verb 有 (yǒu) to say you have a pet, give its name with 叫 (jiào), and use the pattern 是...的人 (shì...de rén) to say what kind of pet person you are. You will also learn to ask others about their pets and share simple pet stories. The focus is on animals and their roles in our lives, so you can talk about your dog, cat, or other pets in a natural way.

    By the end, you can…

    • say I have a pet and give its name using 有 and 叫.
    • say whether I am a dog person or a cat person using 是...的人.
    • ask someone if they have pets and what kind.
    • share a simple pet story using basic verbs.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    我有一只狗,叫Max。

I have a dog named Max.

wǒ yǒu yì zhī gǒu, jiào Max

Use 只 (zhī) as the measure word for most animals. 叫 means 'to be called'.

    我是爱猫的人。

    I'm a cat person.

wǒ shì ài māo de rén

Literally 'I am a cat-loving person.' This pattern expresses your preference.

    你喜欢什么宠物?

    What pets do you like?

    nǐ xǐhuan shénme chǒngwù?

宠物 (chǒngwù) means 'pet'. Use this to ask about preferences.

    我的猫很可爱。

    My cat is very cute.

    wǒ de māo hěn kě'ài

Use 很 (hěn) before adjectives. 可爱 means 'cute'.

    我每天遛狗。

I walk my dog every day.

    wǒ měitiān liù gǒu

遛 (liù) means 'to walk (a dog)'. 每天 means 'every day'.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

To say you have a pet, use 有 (yǒu) with the measure word 只 (zhī): 我有一只狗 (I have a dog). For cats, 我有一只猫. To give the pet's name, add 叫 (jiào) + name: 我有一只狗,叫Max. To say what kind of pet person you are, use 是...的人: 我是爱狗的人 (I'm a dog person) or 我是爱猫的人 (I'm a cat person). You can also say 我是狗派 (I'm team dog) in casual speech, but 爱狗的人 is clearer for beginners.

    When to use it

Use 有 when talking about possession, like 我有宠物 (I have a pet). Use 是...的人 when describing your identity or preference, such as 我是爱猫的人. When asking others, say 你有宠物吗? (Do you have pets?) or 你喜欢狗还是猫? (Do you like dogs or cats?). In pet stories, use simple past markers like 昨天 (yesterday) and verbs like 玩 (play), 跑 (run), 吃 (eat): 昨天我的狗跑了很多 (Yesterday my dog ran a lot).

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    你有宠物吗?

Do you have pets?nǐ yǒu chǒngwù ma?
    B

    有,我有一只猫,叫咪咪。

Yes, I have a cat named Mimi.yǒu, wǒ yǒu yì zhī māo, jiào Mīmī
    A

    我是爱狗的人。我的狗叫Max,很活泼。

I'm a dog person. My dog is named Max, he's very lively.wǒ shì ài gǒu de rén. wǒ de gǒu jiào Max, hěn huópō
    B

    真好!我每天和咪咪玩。

That's nice! I play with Mimi every day.zhēn hǎo! wǒ měitiān hé Mīmī wán

A little context goes a long way

In China, pet ownership is common in cities, but attitudes vary. Dogs are often seen as loyal companions, while cats are popular for their independence. When talking about pets, it's polite to ask about the pet's name and habits. Avoid assuming everyone likes pets; some may be indifferent or prefer not to have them. Use 宠物 (chǒngwù) for 'pet' in general.

    One thing to watch for

Saying 我有一只狗叫Max without the measure word 只, or using 个 for animals.

Try this instead: Always use 只 (zhī) for most animals: 我有一只狗,叫Max. For larger animals like cows or horses, use 头 (tóu) or 匹 (pǐ), but 只 is fine for pets like dogs and cats.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you say 'I have a cat named Mimi' in Chinese?

    Show a sample answer

    我有一只猫,叫咪咪。

This uses 有 with the measure word 只 and 叫 for the name. You can also say 我有一只叫咪咪的猫, but the first is more common in speech.

    2Translate: 'I'm a cat person.'

    Show a sample answer

    我是爱猫的人。

The pattern 是...的人 expresses identity. 爱猫的人 literally means 'cat-loving person'. Alternatively, 我是猫派 is casual but less formal.

3Ask someone if they have pets.

    Show a sample answer

    你有宠物吗?

This is a yes/no question using 吗. You can also ask 你养宠物吗? (Do you keep pets?) with the verb 养 (yǎng).

    Take this with you

Use 有 with 只 to say you have a pet, 叫 to name it, and 是...的人 to say what kind of pet person you are. Practice with your own pet's name and habits.
