Talking About Past Changes in Mandarin: Moving and Changing Jobs

Learn to say you moved to a new city or changed jobs, and share how you felt, using the completed-action marker 了 and the experiential marker 过.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Two friends sharing an evening conversation

In this lesson, you will learn how to talk about past changes in Mandarin, such as moving to a new city or changing jobs, and how to share your feelings about those changes. The focus is on completed actions and experiences, not future career goals. You will use the particle 了 to indicate a completed action, the particle 过 to indicate an experience, and common time words like 去年 (last year) and 以前 (before). You will also learn to ask and answer questions about past changes. By the end, you will be able to have a short conversation about a past move or job change and express simple emotions.

    By the end, you can…

    • say that I moved to a new city or changed jobs using 了 and 过.
    • ask someone if they have moved or changed jobs before.
    • describe how I felt about a past change using simple adjectives.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    我搬家了。

    I moved (home).

    wǒ bān jiā le

Use 搬家 for moving to a new home. 了 marks the action as completed.

    我换工作了。

    I changed jobs.

    wǒ huàn gōng zuò le

换 means 'to change' or 'to switch'. 工作 is both noun and verb.

    我搬到北京了。

    I moved to Beijing.

    wǒ bān dào Běijīng le

Use 搬到 + place to say where you moved to.

    我以前住在上海。

I used to live in Shanghai.

    wǒ yǐqián zhù zài Shànghǎi

以前 means 'before' or 'used to'. No 了 is needed for a past state.

    我有点紧张。

    I was a bit nervous.

    wǒ yǒudiǎn jǐnzhāng

有点 softens the adjective. 紧张 can mean nervous or tense.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

To talk about a completed past change, use Subject + Verb + 了. For example, 我搬家了 (I moved). To say where you moved, use 搬到 + place + 了: 我搬到北京了 (I moved to Beijing). To talk about an experience you have had, use Verb + 过: 我换过工作 (I have changed jobs before). The negative form of 了 is 没(有): 我没搬家 (I didn't move). The negative form of 过 is also 没(有): 我没换过工作 (I have never changed jobs). Time words like 去年 (last year) or 上个月 (last month) often come before the verb: 我去年搬家了 (I moved last year).

    When to use it

Use 了 when you want to emphasize that a change happened and is complete. For example, if a friend asks 你最近怎么样?(How have you been lately?), you can answer 我换工作了 (I changed jobs). Use 过 when you are talking about an experience at some indefinite time in the past, often when answering a question like 你搬过家吗?(Have you ever moved?). If you just want to state a past fact without focusing on completion, you can often omit both particles, especially with time words: 我去年在上海工作 (I worked in Shanghai last year). In casual conversation, 了 is very common for recent changes.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    你最近怎么样?

How have you been lately?nǐ zuìjìn zěnmeyàng
    B

    我搬家了,搬到北京了。

I moved, I moved to Beijing.wǒ bān jiā le, bān dào Běijīng le
    A

    真的吗?你以前住在哪儿?

Really? Where did you live before?zhēnde ma? nǐ yǐqián zhù zài nǎr
    B

    我以前住在上海。我有点紧张,但是很开心。

I used to live in Shanghai. I was a bit nervous, but very happy.wǒ yǐqián zhù zài Shànghǎi. wǒ yǒudiǎn jǐnzhāng, dànshì hěn kāixīn

A little context goes a long way

In Chinese conversations, talking about past changes like moving or changing jobs is common, but people often downplay negative feelings. Saying 有点紧张 (a bit nervous) is more typical than saying 非常害怕 (very scared). Also, when someone shares a change, a common response is to ask for details, such as 为什么?(Why?) or 什么时候?(When?), to show interest. Avoid directly asking about salary or personal reasons unless you are close.

    One thing to watch for

Using 了 with 以前 to say 'I used to live in Shanghai': 我以前住了在上海。

Try this instead: 以前 describes a past state, so do not use 了. Say 我以前住在上海。 Also, 住 in 住在 is a verb followed by 在 + place, so 了 does not go between 住 and 在. If you want to emphasize a completed move, say 我搬到上海了。

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you say 'I changed jobs' in Mandarin?

    Show a sample answer

    我换工作了。

This uses 换工作 (change jobs) with 了 to show the action is completed. You could also say 我换过工作 if you mean 'I have changed jobs before'.

2What is the difference between 我搬家了 and 我搬过家?

    Show a sample answer

我搬家了 means 'I moved (and it's done).' 我搬过家 means 'I have moved (at least once in my life).'

了 focuses on completion of a specific action, while 过 focuses on experience. Both are correct in different contexts.

3Translate: 'I used to live in Shanghai.'

    Show a sample answer

    我以前住在上海。

以前 (before) indicates a past state, so no 了 is used. 住在 means 'live in/at'. You could also say 我以前在上海住, which is also correct.

    Take this with you

Use 了 for completed past changes like moving or changing jobs, and 过 for experiences. Remember that 以前 describes past states without 了.
