Mandarin Chinese: Summarizing Key Points at the End of a Discussion

Learn Mandarin phrases and patterns for wrapping up a discussion: signaling the close, restating main points with 总的来说 and 归纳起来, confirming agreement, and assigning next steps.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.

Ending a discussion well is a distinct skill in Mandarin. You need a clear signal that the conversation is moving to its close, a compact way to restate the main points, and a polite way to confirm what happens next. This lesson gives you fixed expressions such as 总的来说 and 归纳起来, the framing pattern 大家一致认为, and closing moves like 今天就到这里. You will practice ordering these moves so your summary sounds deliberate rather than abrupt. The focus is wrapping up a discussion you have just had; paraphrasing individual statements is not covered here.

    By the end, you can…

    • signal that a discussion is ending and summarize its main points in Mandarin.
    • confirm agreement and state next steps using set closing expressions.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    总的来说

    on the whole; in summary

    zǒng de lái shuō

The most common neutral opener for a closing summary. Place it at the start of your final turn, then state two or three main points.

    归纳起来

to sum up; putting it together

    guī nà qǐ lái

Slightly more formal than 总的来说. Useful in meetings or study groups when you are drawing several opinions into one conclusion.

    大家一致认为

    everyone agrees that

dà jiā yī zhì rèn wéi

Use when the group reached a shared view. It frames the summary as collective, not just your own opinion.

    这一点很重要

    this point is important

zhè yī diǎn hěn zhòng yào

Use to highlight one key point before you close. It signals priority without reopening the whole debate.

    今天就到这里

    let's stop here for today

jīn tiān jiù dào zhè lǐ

A natural, friendly way to end a meeting or class discussion. Follow it with thanks or a next-step sentence.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

A reliable closing summary follows this order: signal, summarize, confirm, close. Start with 总的来说 or 归纳起来, then give your points with 第一 and 第二, then confirm with 大家一致认为, and finish with 今天就到这里. For example: 总的来说,第一,预算不变;第二,下个月开始执行。大家一致认为这个方案可行。今天就到这里。Notice that 第一 and 第二 keep the summary short and easy to follow, and the final sentence clearly ends the discussion.

    When to use it

Use these expressions only when the discussion is genuinely ending. If people are still debating, saying 总的来说 too early can sound like you are cutting them off. In a relaxed chat among friends, 总的来说 plus one point is enough: 总的来说,我们都同意周末去爬山。In a formal meeting, add 归纳起来 and 大家一致认为 to sound organized: 归纳起来,大家一致认为要先做调查。If you are not the chair, soften the close with 我先总结一下 (let me summarize first) so it does not sound like you are taking control.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    时间差不多了,我来总结一下今天的讨论。

We're almost out of time, so let me summarize today's discussion.shí jiān chà bu duō le, wǒ lái zǒng jié yī xià jīn tiān de tǎo lùn.
    B

    好,你说吧。

Okay, go ahead.hǎo, nǐ shuō ba.
    A

    总的来说,第一,预算不变;第二,下个月开始执行。大家一致认为这个方案可行。

On the whole: first, the budget stays the same; second, we start next month. Everyone agrees this plan is workable.zǒng de lái shuō, dì yī, yù suàn bù biàn; dì èr, xià ge yuè kāi shǐ zhí xíng. dà jiā yī zhì rèn wéi zhè ge fāng àn kě xíng.
    B

    同意。那今天就到这里,谢谢大家。

Agreed. Then let's stop here for today. Thank you, everyone.tóng yì. nà jīn tiān jiù dào zhè lǐ, xiè xie dà jiā.

A little context goes a long way

In many Mandarin-speaking workplaces and classrooms, the person who called the meeting or the teacher usually gives the closing summary, so wait for that role or ask 我先总结一下 before taking over. Formal meetings often end with a short round of agreement such as 同意 or 没问题 rather than long speeches. With friends, a full 归纳起来 summary can sound stiff; one clear sentence plus 今天就到这里 is usually enough.

    One thing to watch for

Ending with a bare 我说完了 (I've finished speaking), which sounds like you are stopping mid-conversation rather than closing the discussion.

Try this instead: Use a closing formula that signals the whole discussion is ending, for example 总的来说,我们都同意这个方案。今天就到这里。The summary plus 今天就到这里 tells listeners the topic is closed, not just your turn.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1You are chairing a meeting and want to open your final summary. Which phrase fits best: 总的来说 or 顺便说一下?

    Show a sample answer

    总的来说

总的来说 introduces a closing summary. 顺便说一下 means 'by the way' and adds a side point, which would reopen the discussion instead of wrapping it up.

2The group reached one shared conclusion. Complete the sentence: 大家一致____这个方案可行。

    Show a sample answer

    认为

大家一致认为 means 'everyone agrees that'. 认为 is the verb 'to consider, to hold the view'. Other verbs could fit grammatically, but 认为 is the standard collocation after 一致.

3You want to end a friendly study session after summarizing one point. What do you say?

    Show a sample answer

    总的来说,我们都同意下周复习第二章。今天就到这里。

This gives one clear summary point and a friendly close. In a casual setting, a short summary is enough; a longer 归纳起来 structure would also be correct but may sound more formal than needed.

    Take this with you

Close a Mandarin discussion in four moves: signal with 总的来说 or 归纳起来, list your points briefly, confirm with 大家一致认为, and end with 今天就到这里.
