Chinese for Badminton: Borrow a Spare Racket and Check Grip Size

Learn to ask for a spare badminton racket in Mandarin, check grip size and grip tape, and respond politely when borrowing at a sports club.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Two friends sharing an evening conversation

You arrive at the badminton court and realize your racket is still at home. In a Chinese sports club, you can solve this politely in Mandarin. This lesson teaches the key nouns 备用球拍 (bèiyòng qiúpāi, spare racket), 拍柄粗细 (pāibǐng cūxì, grip size), and 手胶 (shǒujiāo, grip tape), plus the request pattern 可以借…吗? (kěyǐ jiè… ma?, may I borrow…?). You will also learn to ask whether a racket feels comfortable and to thank the staff. The focus is on speaking clearly and politely, not on memorizing equipment catalogs. All examples are suitable for a typical club or gym conversation in mainland China.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask a staff member for a spare badminton racket in polite Mandarin.
    • ask about grip size and whether grip tape is already applied.
    • say whether a racket feels comfortable and respond to a simple offer.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    请问,有备用球拍吗?

Excuse me, do you have a spare racket?

    qǐngwèn, yǒu bèiyòng qiúpāi ma?

Use 请问 to open a polite question to staff. 备用球拍 means a racket kept for lending or backup.

    可以借我一支吗?

    May I borrow one?

kěyǐ jiè wǒ yī zhī ma?

The pattern 可以借我…吗? is a polite request. 一支 is the common measure word for one racket.

    这支拍柄粗细合适吗?

    Is this grip size suitable?

zhè zhī pāibǐng cūxì héshì ma?

拍柄粗细 literally means grip thickness. 合适 means suitable or comfortable in this context.

    有新手胶吗?

Do you have new grip tape?

    yǒu xīn shǒujiāo ma?

手胶 is the wrap on the handle. 新 means new; asking for new tape is common when borrowing.

    这支拍子手感不错。

    This racket feels good.

    zhè zhī pāizi shǒugǎn bùcuò.

手感 refers to how it feels in the hand. Use this to comment after trying the racket.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The core pattern is 可以借我…吗? (kěyǐ jiè wǒ… ma?), meaning 'May I borrow…?'. Put the item after 我: 可以借我一支备用球拍吗? (May I borrow a spare racket?). To ask about a quality, use 拍柄粗细 + 合适吗?: 这支拍柄粗细合适吗? (Is this grip size suitable?). To ask if something exists, use 有…吗?: 有新手胶吗? (Do you have new grip tape?). These three patterns cover the whole borrowing exchange.

    When to use it

Use 请问 at the start when approaching staff you do not know. Use 可以借我…吗? when you need to borrow an item; it is polite and clear. Use 拍柄粗细合适吗? after you hold the racket, if the handle feels too thick or too thin. Use 有新手胶吗? if the handle feels worn or sticky. If the staff offers a racket, you can reply 谢谢,我试试 (Thank you, I'll try it). Avoid saying 我要 (I want) directly to staff; it can sound demanding.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    你好,请问有备用球拍吗?我忘了带拍子。

Hello, do you have a spare racket? I forgot to bring mine.nǐhǎo, qǐngwèn yǒu bèiyòng qiúpāi ma? wǒ wàng le dài pāizi.
    B

    有的,这边有几支。你要试试吗?

Yes, we have a few here. Would you like to try one?yǒu de, zhèbiān yǒu jǐ zhī. nǐ yào shìshi ma?
    A

    可以借我一支吗?这支拍柄粗细合适吗?

May I borrow one? Is this grip size suitable?kěyǐ jiè wǒ yī zhī ma? zhè zhī pāibǐng cūxì héshì ma?
    B

    这支比较细,你可以试试。手胶也是新的。

This one is thinner; you can try it. The grip tape is new too.zhè zhī bǐjiào xì, nǐ kěyǐ shìshi. shǒujiāo yě shì xīn de.

A little context goes a long way

In Chinese sports clubs, staff usually respond well to a polite 请问 and 可以借我…吗?. Borrowing equipment is common, but it is good manners to return it promptly and to mention if the grip tape is worn. If you are not a member, ask 可以借吗? rather than assuming. Tipping is not expected for this kind of favor; a simple 谢谢 is enough.

    One thing to watch for

Saying 我要一支球拍 (I want a racket) directly to staff.

Try this instead: Use a polite request: 可以借我一支球拍吗? (May I borrow a racket?). 我要 can sound demanding in a service setting. If you are buying, say 我想买一支球拍 (I'd like to buy a racket).

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you ask a staff member if they have a spare racket?

    Show a sample answer

    请问,有备用球拍吗?

This uses 请问 for politeness and 有…吗? for existence. 备用球拍 is the exact term for a spare racket. You could also add 我忘了带拍子 to explain why.

2You are holding a racket and the handle feels too thick. What can you ask?

    Show a sample answer

    这支拍柄粗细合适吗?有没有细一点的?

The first question checks suitability; the second asks for a thinner one. 细一点 means 'a bit thinner'. This is natural and polite.

3The staff hands you a racket with old grip tape. What do you say?

    Show a sample answer

    有新手胶吗?

This directly asks for new grip tape. You can also say 可以换新手胶吗? (Can you replace the grip tape?). Both are appropriate.

    Take this with you

Remember three phrases: 有备用球拍吗? (spare racket), 拍柄粗细合适吗? (grip size), and 有新手胶吗? (grip tape). Add 请问 and 可以借我…吗? to keep the request polite.
