How to Say 'I Think' in Chinese to Soften Disagreement

Learn to use 我觉得 (wǒ juéde) and 可能 (kěnéng) to politely disagree in Mandarin, with five key phrases, a dialogue, and practice.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A quiet illustrated scene for evening language practice

In Mandarin, directly saying 'that won't work' can sound blunt. To soften disagreement, use 我觉得 (wǒ juéde, I think) with 可能 (kěnéng, maybe/possibly) or 不太 (bú tài, not very). This lesson teaches you to express polite doubt without causing offense. You will learn five phrases, see them in a dialogue, and practice forming your own softened disagreements.

    By the end, you can…

    • use 我觉得 to introduce a polite opinion.
    • combine 可能 and 不太 to soften disagreement.
    • politely disagree in a short conversation.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    我觉得可能不行。

I think it might not work.

    wǒ juéde kěnéng bù xíng

Use when you doubt a plan or suggestion. 不行 means 'not work' or 'not be okay'.

    我觉得可能不太合适。

I think it might not be very suitable.

wǒ juéde kěnéng bú tài héshì

Softer than 不行. Use for suggestions, timing, or choices that may not fit.

    我觉得可能有问题。

I think there might be a problem.

    wǒ juéde kěnéng yǒu wèntí

Use when you see a potential issue but are not completely sure.

    我觉得这样不太好。

I think this isn't so good.

wǒ juéde zhèyàng bú tài hǎo

Use to gently disagree with a way of doing something. 这样 means 'this way'.

    我觉得可能不行吧。

I think it might not work, maybe?

wǒ juéde kěnéng bù xíng ba

Adding 吧 (ba) at the end makes the disagreement even softer and more tentative.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The core pattern is 我觉得 + 可能 + [negative comment]. 我觉得 (wǒ juéde) means 'I think' and introduces your opinion. 可能 (kěnéng) means 'maybe' or 'possibly' and adds uncertainty. The negative comment can be 不行 (bù xíng, not work), 不太好 (bú tài hǎo, not so good), or 不太合适 (bú tài héshì, not very suitable). For example: 我觉得可能不行。 (I think it might not work.) 我觉得可能不太合适。 (I think it might not be very suitable.) You can also add 吧 (ba) at the end to make it even softer: 我觉得可能不行吧。 (I think it might not work, maybe?)

    When to use it

Use this pattern when you want to disagree politely with a friend, colleague, or someone you do not know well. It is common in meetings, when making plans, or when giving feedback. For example, if a friend suggests a restaurant you dislike, you can say 我觉得可能不太合适。 (I think it might not be very suitable.) If a colleague proposes a plan you doubt, say 我觉得可能有问题。 (I think there might be a problem.) Avoid using this pattern for strong disagreement; it is meant for gentle, tentative objections. In formal situations, you can also use 我认为 (wǒ rènwéi, I think/consider), which is more formal than 我觉得.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

A little context goes a long way

In Chinese communication, indirectness is often valued to maintain harmony. Using 我觉得 with 可能 and a negative comment allows you to express disagreement without directly challenging the other person. Adding 吧 at the end further softens the tone. However, in urgent or clear-cut situations, being too indirect may cause confusion. Adjust based on context and relationship.

    One thing to watch for

Saying 我觉得不行 without 可能, which can sound too direct and blunt.

Try this instead: Add 可能 to soften: 我觉得可能不行。 This makes the disagreement sound more tentative and polite.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How would you say 'I think it might not work' in Chinese?

    Show a sample answer

    我觉得可能不行。

This uses the pattern 我觉得 + 可能 + 不行. You can also add 吧 for extra softness: 我觉得可能不行吧。

    2What does 不太合适 mean?

    Show a sample answer

    not very suitable

不太 means 'not very' and 合适 means 'suitable'. Together they form a polite way to say something is not quite right.

3Make a polite disagreement: Your friend suggests a movie you think is boring. Use 我觉得 and 可能.

    Show a sample answer

    我觉得可能不太好看。

This means 'I think it might not be very good (to watch).' You could also say 我觉得可能没意思。 (I think it might not be interesting.)

    Take this with you

To soften disagreement in Chinese, start with 我觉得, add 可能, and use a negative comment like 不行 or 不太合适. Add 吧 for extra politeness.
