Weather is one of the safest ways to start a brief conversation in Mandarin. In this lesson you will learn a small set of beginner phrases that let you comment on today's weather, ask a simple follow-up, agree, and close politely. Mandarin does not use articles or verb conjugation for this kind of talk, so the main skills are word order, the question particle 吗 (ma), and a few set expressions. Keep each turn short: one comment or one question is usually enough. The goal is a friendly two- or three-turn exchange, not a long discussion.

A safe, positive opener. 今天 (jīn tiān) means 'today'; 天气 (tiān qì) means 'weather'; 很好 (hěn hǎo) means 'very good'.

jīn tiān tiān qì zěn me yàng
Use 怎么样 (zěn me yàng) to ask 'how about...?' It is a friendly, open question and does not need 吗 (ma).
今天很热。

A simple comment. 很 (hěn) links the subject to the adjective; it does not always mean 'very' strongly.
今天很冷。
It is very cold today.
jīn tiān hěn lěng
Use the same pattern with 冷 (lěng) 'cold'. Keep the tone on 冷 (lěng) low and dipping.
是啊，天气不错。
Yes, the weather is not bad.
shì a, tiān qì bù cuò
A natural agreement. 不错 (bù cuò) literally 'not wrong' but means 'pretty good' or 'not bad'.

Useful pattern
A very useful beginner pattern is: Time word + 天气 (tiān qì) + 很 (hěn) + adjective. For example, 今天天气很好 (jīn tiān tiān qì hěn hǎo) means 'The weather is nice today.' To ask, replace the adjective with 怎么样 (zěn me yàng): 今天天气怎么样？ (jīn tiān tiān qì zěn me yàng?) 'How is the weather today?' You can also drop 今天 (jīn tiān) if the time is clear: 天气很好 (tiān qì hěn hǎo) 'The weather is nice.' Notice that Mandarin does not add 'is' or 'it' here; the adjective follows 很 (hěn) directly.
When to use it
Use these phrases when you meet a neighbor, a classmate, or a colleague and want a short, low-pressure opening. A single comment like 今天很热 (jīn tiān hěn rè) 'It is very hot today' invites a reply, but it does not demand one. If the other person answers with a short phrase, you can agree with 是啊 (shì a) and add 天气不错 (tiān qì bù cuò). Then stop. In many everyday situations, two or three turns are enough. Avoid turning weather talk into questions about someone's personal life; keep it about the weather and the moment.

In Mandarin small talk, weather comments are common as a brief, friendly opener. A short reply is normal and not rude. If someone gives only a minimal answer, do not push for more; you can simply smile or say 是啊 (shì a). Politeness here comes from a warm tone and a brief exchange, not from many questions.
One thing to watch for
Adding 是 (shì) before an adjective, as in 今天天气是很好 (jīn tiān tiān qì shì hěn hǎo).
Try this instead: Do not use 是 (shì) with a simple adjective. Say 今天天气很好 (jīn tiān tiān qì hěn hǎo). Use 是 (shì) mainly for noun sentences, such as 我是学生 (wǒ shì xué sheng) 'I am a student.'
