Mandarin Chinese for Beginners: Start, Sustain, and Politely Exit Light Social Conversation
Learn to greet, chat about weather, food, and interests, and exit politely in Mandarin Chinese, with pinyin and tone marks.

At a party or gathering, you want to talk with someone new in Mandarin Chinese but only know a few words. This lesson gives you ready-made phrases to start a light conversation, keep it going with simple questions about weather, food, and hobbies, and then leave politely without awkwardness. You will practice short exchanges that fit beginner level. All examples use simplified Chinese characters and pinyin with tone marks. The focus is on spoken interaction, not grammar analysis. By the end, you will be able to handle a five-minute chat and exit gracefully.

你好!今天天气真好。
Hello! The weather is really nice today.
Nǐ hǎo! Jīntiān tiānqì zhēn hǎo.
Use as an opener at an outdoor or indoor gathering. 'Nǐ hǎo' is neutral and safe with strangers.
你喜欢吃什么菜?
What kind of food do you like?
Nǐ xǐhuan chī shénme cài?
A friendly question to move from weather to food. 'Cài' means dishes or cuisine, not just vegetables.
我平时喜欢看书和听音乐。
I usually like reading and listening to music.
Wǒ píngshí xǐhuan kàn shū hé tīng yīnyuè.
Share a simple interest. 'Píngshí' means usually or in daily life, making it sound casual.
你呢?
What about you?
Nǐ ne?
A short follow-up to keep the conversation going. Use it after you answer a question.
不好意思,我得走了。很高兴认识你!
Sorry, I have to go. Nice to meet you!
Bù hǎoyìsi, wǒ děi zǒu le. Hěn gāoxìng rènshi nǐ!
A polite exit. 'Bù hǎoyìsi' softens the interruption; 'děi zǒu le' means must go now.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.
Make it make sense
Useful pattern
To ask about likes, use 你喜欢 + verb + 什么? (Nǐ xǐhuan + verb + shénme?). For example, 你喜欢喝什么? (Nǐ xǐhuan hē shénme? What do you like to drink?) or 你喜欢做什么? (Nǐ xǐhuan zuò shénme? What do you like to do?). Answer with 我喜欢 + verb + object: 我喜欢喝茶。 (Wǒ xǐhuan hē chá. I like drinking tea.) To return the question, add 你呢? (Nǐ ne? What about you?). This pattern works for food, drinks, hobbies, and music. It is simple and does not require changing verb endings.
When to use it
Use these phrases at casual social events such as a friend's party, a meetup, or a community gathering. Start with weather if you are outdoors or near a window: 今天天气真好。 (Jīntiān tiānqì zhēn hǎo. The weather is really nice today.) Then move to food: 你喜欢吃什么菜? (Nǐ xǐhuan chī shénme cài? What food do you like?) If the person seems interested, ask about hobbies: 你平时喜欢做什么? (Nǐ píngshí xǐhuan zuò shénme? What do you usually like to do?) Keep answers short and ask 你呢? to share the talk. When you need to leave, say 不好意思,我得走了。 (Bù hǎoyìsi, wǒ děi zǒu le. Sorry, I have to go.) Then add 很高兴认识你! (Hěn gāoxìng rènshi nǐ! Nice to meet you!) and a simple 再见。 (Zàijiàn. Goodbye.)
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
你好!今天天气真好。
Hello! The weather is really nice today.Nǐ hǎo! Jīntiān tiānqì zhēn hǎo.是啊,很适合聊天。你喜欢吃什么菜?
Yes, it's great for chatting. What food do you like?Shì a, hěn shìhé liáotiān. Nǐ xǐhuan chī shénme cài?我喜欢吃川菜。你呢?
I like Sichuan food. What about you?Wǒ xǐhuan chī chuāncài. Nǐ ne?我也喜欢。不好意思,我得走了。很高兴认识你!
I like it too. Sorry, I have to go. Nice to meet you!Wǒ yě xǐhuan. Bù hǎoyìsi, wǒ děi zǒu le. Hěn gāoxìng rènshi nǐ!A little context goes a long way
In Mandarin Chinese, light conversation often starts with neutral topics like weather or food. Direct questions about age, salary, or marital status can be common in some contexts but may feel too personal at a casual gathering with new acquaintances. When exiting, a brief apology plus a reason is polite; you do not need a long explanation. Using 不好意思 (bù hǎoyìsi) is softer than 对不起 (duìbuqǐ), which is for real apologies. A smile and a slight nod help convey friendliness.
One thing to watch for
Using 你好吗? (Nǐ hǎo ma? How are you?) as a casual greeting with strangers.
Try this instead: In everyday Mandarin, 你好吗? can sound like a genuine health inquiry. For a light greeting, say 你好! (Nǐ hǎo! Hello!) or comment on the setting: 今天天气真好。 (Jīntiān tiānqì zhēn hǎo. The weather is really nice today.)
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1You want to ask a new acquaintance what food they like. What do you say?

你喜欢吃什么菜? (Nǐ xǐhuan chī shénme cài?)
This directly asks about food preferences using the 你喜欢 + verb + 什么 pattern. You could also ask 你喜欢吃什么? (Nǐ xǐhuan chī shénme?) without 菜, which is also correct.
2Someone asks about your hobbies. Give a simple answer and return the question.

我喜欢看书。你呢? (Wǒ xǐhuan kàn shū. Nǐ ne?)
This answers with 我喜欢 + verb + object and then uses 你呢? to keep the conversation going. Other hobbies like 听音乐 (tīng yīnyuè) or 运动 (yùndòng) also work.
3You need to leave a conversation politely. What do you say?

不好意思,我得走了。很高兴认识你! (Bù hǎoyìsi, wǒ děi zǒu le. Hěn gāoxìng rènshi nǐ!)
This uses a soft apology, a reason, and a friendly closing. You can add 再见 (Zàijiàn) at the end. Saying just 我得走了 (Wǒ děi zǒu le) without 不好意思 can sound abrupt.
Start with weather or food, keep it light with 你呢?, and exit with 不好意思,我得走了。 Practice these phrases aloud until they feel natural.
