Learn to tell stories about your time in other cultures using Mandarin Chinese. This lesson covers key phrases, the 的时候 pattern, and cultural storytelling tips for intermediate learners.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A quiet illustrated scene for evening language practice

Telling stories about your experiences in other cultures is a common and engaging way to connect with Mandarin speakers. In this lesson, you will learn how to structure a simple narrative in Mandarin Chinese, using time markers, the 的时候 (de shíhou) pattern, and expressions for describing actions and feelings. We will focus on sharing your own experiences, such as 'When I was in...' and 'I saw...', without covering how to ask others about their experiences. By the end, you will be able to narrate a short anecdote about your time abroad, using appropriate past-time indicators and cultural sensitivity. The lesson includes key phrases, a dialogue, and practice exercises to build your storytelling skills.

    By the end, you can…

    • describe a past experience in another culture using time markers like 的时候 (de shíhou).
    • use verbs and expressions to narrate a sequence of events in Mandarin Chinese.
    • share my feelings and reactions about a cultural experience in a simple story.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    我在……的时候

    When I was in...

    wǒ zài ... de shíhou

Use this to set the time and place of your story. Insert a place or time after 在 (zài).

    我看到了……

    I saw...

    wǒ kàn dào le ...

Use 了 (le) to indicate a completed action. This is common for describing what you observed.

    我觉得很……

    I felt very...

    wǒ juéde hěn ...

Express your emotional reaction. Follow with an adjective like 惊讶 (jīngyà, surprised) or 开心 (kāixīn, happy).

    然后

    then / after that

    ránhòu

Use this to connect events in a sequence. It helps your story flow naturally.

    有一次

    once / one time

    yǒu yí cì

Start a story about a specific incident. It signals that an anecdote is coming.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The pattern 当……的时候 (dāng ... de shíhou) means 'when...' and is essential for storytelling. You can use it with a place or time: 当我在日本的时候 (dāng wǒ zài Rìběn de shíhou) means 'When I was in Japan'. You can also use it with an action: 当我吃饭的时候 (dāng wǒ chīfàn de shíhou) means 'When I was eating'. Note that the clause after 的时候 describes what happened. For example: 当我在法国的时候,我每天吃面包 (dāng wǒ zài Fǎguó de shíhou, wǒ měitiān chī miànbāo) — 'When I was in France, I ate bread every day.' This pattern allows you to set the scene before narrating events.

    When to use it

Use 当……的时候 when you want to provide background information about a past experience. It is more formal than simply saying 我在日本的时候 (wǒ zài Rìběn de shíhou), which is also correct and common in spoken Chinese. For a casual story, you can omit 当 (dāng) and just say 我在……的时候. For example: 我在意大利的时候,遇到了一个有趣的人 (wǒ zài Yìdàlì de shíhou, yùdào le yí gè yǒuqù de rén) — 'When I was in Italy, I met an interesting person.' Use this pattern to introduce the setting, then use 然后 (ránhòu) to continue the sequence of events.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    有一次,当我在泰国的时候,我去了一个水上市场。

Once, when I was in Thailand, I went to a floating market.Yǒu yí cì, dāng wǒ zài Tàiguó de shíhou, wǒ qù le yí gè shuǐshàng shìchǎng.
    B

    真的吗?那里怎么样?

Really? How was it there?Zhēn de ma? Nàlǐ zěnmeyàng?
    A

    我觉得很惊讶,因为人们在船上卖东西。然后我尝了一些当地的小吃。

I felt very surprised, because people were selling things on boats. Then I tried some local snacks.Wǒ juéde hěn jīngyà, yīnwèi rénmen zài chuán shàng mài dōngxi. Ránhòu wǒ cháng le yìxiē dāngdì de xiǎochī.
    B

    听起来很有趣!

Sounds very interesting!Tīng qǐlái hěn yǒuqù!

A little context goes a long way

In Chinese storytelling, it is common to provide context before the main event, and to use time markers like 有一次 (yǒu yí cì) to signal a personal anecdote. When sharing experiences from other cultures, Chinese speakers often show interest by asking follow-up questions, but in this lesson we focus on your own narration. Be mindful that direct expressions of surprise or criticism about another culture may be interpreted as judgmental; it is often better to describe your feelings using 我觉得 (wǒ juéde) to keep the tone personal and non-confrontational.

    One thing to watch for

Using 了 (le) incorrectly with stative verbs, e.g., saying 我是在泰国了 (wǒ shì zài Tàiguó le) to mean 'I was in Thailand'.

Try this instead: For past location, use 当我在泰国的时候 (dāng wǒ zài Tàiguó de shíhou) or simply 我在泰国的时候 (wǒ zài Tàiguó de shíhou). The verb 是 (shì) is not used for location. For completed actions, use 了 after the verb: 我去了泰国 (wǒ qù le Tàiguó) — 'I went to Thailand'.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How would you say 'When I was in China, I saw the Great Wall'?

    Show a sample answer

    当我在中国的时候,我看到了长城。

This uses the 当……的时候 pattern to set the time and place, and 看到了 (kàn dào le) to indicate a completed action. Alternatively, you could say 我在中国的时候,我看到了长城, which is also correct.

2What phrase would you use to start a story about a specific incident?

    Show a sample answer

    有一次

有一次 (yǒu yí cì) means 'once' or 'one time' and is commonly used to introduce a personal anecdote. Other options like 有一天 (yǒu yì tiān, one day) are also possible depending on context.

3Translate: 'I felt very happy, because I made new friends.'

    Show a sample answer

    我觉得很开心,因为我交了新朋友。

This uses 觉得 (juéde) to express a feeling, followed by an adjective. 因为 (yīnwèi) introduces the reason. You could also say 我很开心,因为……, which is slightly more direct but still correct.

    Take this with you

To share experiences in other cultures, use 当……的时候 to set the scene, 然后 to sequence events, and 我觉得 to express feelings. Keep your story personal and use time markers like 有一次 to engage your listener.
