How to Say No Firmly but Kindly in Mandarin: "I Can't Take That On Right Now"

Learn Mandarin phrases for turning down a request or extra task politely but clearly, focusing on personal capacity limits rather than declining social plans. Includes patterns, dialogue and practice.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Two friends sharing an evening conversation

Sometimes the hardest refusal is not turning down a dinner invitation, but telling a colleague, friend or relative that you cannot take on one more task. In Mandarin, this kind of refusal centers on capacity and timing: what you can handle (能) and what is possible right now (现在). The key phrase in this lesson is 我现在接不了这个. It is firm because it states a limit, but kind because it does not attack the person asking. You will learn the core pattern, softer variants, and how to avoid sounding as if you are rejecting the person rather than the workload.

    By the end, you can…

    • refuse an extra task or request in Mandarin by naming my current capacity limit.
    • soften a refusal with 不好意思 and a brief reason without over-apologizing.
    • distinguish refusing a task from declining a social plan.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

I can't take that on right now.

wǒ xiànzài jiē bu liǎo zhège

Direct but not rude. Use when someone asks you to handle a task, project or favor and your current workload or energy will not allow it.

Sorry, I really can't handle any more right now.

bù hǎoyìsi, wǒ zuìjìn shízài máng bu guòlái

A common polite opener. 忙不过来 means too busy to cope, not simply 'busy'. It explains the limit without blaming the other person.

I have no way to take this on for the time being.

zhè jiàn shì wǒ zànshí méi bànfǎ jiē

Slightly more formal. 暂时 signals a temporary limit, leaving room for future cooperation without making a promise.

My hands are already full with what I have.

Useful at work. 手头 refers to tasks currently on your plate; 排满了 means the schedule is fully booked.

I really can't help this time, sorry.

A warmer refusal for friends or family. 帮不上忙 focuses on inability to help, not unwillingness.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The core pattern is 我现在 + 接不了 + 这个. 接 means to take on or accept a task, 不了 marks inability, and 现在 limits the refusal to the present. You can swap the object: 我现在接不了新项目 (I can't take on a new project right now). For a softer version, add 不好意思 at the start: 不好意思,我现在接不了这个. To explain capacity, use 忙不过来 (too busy to cope) or 排满了 (fully scheduled). Avoid saying 我不接, which sounds like a flat policy rather than a current limit.

    When to use it

Use this language when the request concerns work, effort or responsibility: a colleague asks you to join a project, a friend asks for a big favor, or a relative asks you to organize something. It is not the same as declining a social plan. For a dinner invitation, Mandarin speakers often say (I can't go) or 下次吧 (maybe next time). For a task, the issue is capacity, so 接不了, 忙不过来 or 帮不上忙 fit better. If you want to leave a door open, add 以后有机会再说 (we can talk about it later if there's a chance), but only if you mean it.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

Xiao Li, could you help take on this new project?Xiǎo Lǐ, zhège xīn xiàngmù nǐ néng bu néng bāngmáng jiē yíxià?
    B

    A

I understand. Will you have a bit more time next month?Lǐjiě. Nà xià ge yuè nǐ shíjiān huì sōng yìdiǎn ma?
    B

Next month might be a bit better. Let's see when it comes, okay?Xià ge yuè kěnéng hǎo yìdiǎn, dào shíhou zài kàn, hǎo ma?

A little context goes a long way

In many Mandarin-speaking workplaces, a direct 不行 can feel blunt, while excessive apologizing can sound as if you have done something wrong. The balanced move is to acknowledge the request, state your limit, and keep the tone cooperative. 不好意思 is softer than 对不起 here; 对不起 suggests a real fault, while 不好意思 simply smooths the refusal. Regional habits vary, and some workplaces are more direct than others, so match the level of formality around you.

    One thing to watch for

Saying 我不要接这个 to mean 'I don't want to take this on.'

Try this instead: 不要 sounds like a personal rejection or a childish refusal. For a capacity limit, say 我现在接不了这个 or 我忙不过来. If you truly mean you are unwilling, it is clearer to say 这个我不太想做, but use that only when you intend to be frank.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1A colleague asks you to take on an extra report today. Refuse firmly but kindly in one or two sentences.

    Show a sample answer

This works because 不好意思 softens the refusal, 接不了 states the capacity limit, and 排满了 gives a concrete reason. 我最近实在忙不过来 would also be valid.

2Which phrase fits better for declining a friend's dinner invitation: 接不了 or 去不了?

    Show a sample answer

去不了 means 'I can't go' and fits a social plan. 接不了 is about taking on a task or responsibility, so it would sound odd for a dinner invitation unless you mean taking on the organizing work.

3Soften 我现在没办法接这个 by adding a polite opener and a temporary word.

    Show a sample answer

不好意思 makes it polite, and 暂时 signals that the limit is temporary. 我现在接不了这个,抱歉 is also acceptable, though it is a little more direct.

    Take this with you

To say no to an extra task in Mandarin, name your current limit: 我现在接不了这个. Add 不好意思 for warmth, 忙不过来 or 排满了 for a reason, and avoid 不要, which sounds like personal rejection.
