Chinese for Tea Shops: Asking to Smell the Tea Before You Buy

Learn to ask politely in Mandarin whether you may smell tea leaves and taste a sample before buying, using 闻香, 试喝 and the request pattern 可以吗?

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A quiet illustrated scene for evening language practice

In a Chinese tea shop, it is normal to want to know how the tea smells and tastes before you decide. This lesson gives you three useful pieces of language: 闻香 (smell the aroma), 试喝 (taste a sample), and the polite question ending 可以吗? (is that okay?). You will learn to make a polite request, ask which teas are suitable for smelling, and respond when staff offer you a sample. The focus is on polite spoken Mandarin in a tea shop setting. You do not need to know tea names in advance; you can point and ask.

    By the end, you can…

    • politely ask whether I may smell tea leaves before buying.
    • ask for a small taste sample using 试喝.
    • use 可以吗? to turn a statement into a polite request.
    • understand and respond to a simple offer of a sample.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    May I smell this tea?

wǒ kěyǐ wén yíxià zhège chá ma

Point to the tea you mean. 一下 makes the action brief and casual-polite.

Is it okay to smell the aroma?

    kěyǐ wénxiāng ma

闻香 is the natural tea-shop word for smelling the dry leaves or the brewed aroma.

    Can I taste this tea?

    zhège chá kěyǐ shìhē ma

试喝 means a small taste sample, not a full cup to drink casually.

I would like to smell it first, then decide.

wǒ xiǎng xiān wénxiāng, zài juédìng

Useful when you are not ready to buy. 先…再… means first…then….

    Okay, thank you.

    hǎo de, xièxie

A natural reply when staff agree or offer you a sample.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The pattern 可以… (kě-yǐ … ma) turns an action into a polite question: 可以闻香吗? (May I smell the aroma?), (May I taste a sample?), (May I take a look?). You can also put 我可以…吗? at the front: 我可以闻一下吗? (May I smell it?). Adding 一下 after the verb makes the request sound lighter and less demanding: 闻一下, 试喝一下, 看一下. In a tea shop, 可以吗? on its own works as a short follow-up question after you point or name the tea: 这个,可以吗? (This one, is that okay?).

    When to use it

Use these questions when you are interested but not yet ready to buy. If the staff agree, you can say 谢谢 and then ask 这个茶可以试喝吗? If you want to compare two teas, say (May I smell both this one and that one?). If you are not ready to decide, say (I would like to smell first, then decide). Keep your tone gentle; 可以吗? is polite, but adding 请问 (qǐng-wèn, may I ask) at the start makes it even softer: 请问,可以试喝吗?

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

Hello, may I smell this tea?nǐ hǎo, wǒ kěyǐ wén yíxià zhège chá ma
    B

Yes, please smell it. This tea is very fragrant.kěyǐ, qǐng wén. zhège chá hěn xiāng
    A

Thank you. Can I taste this tea?xièxie. zhège chá kěyǐ shìhē ma
    B

Yes, I will brew a small cup for you.kěyǐ, wǒ gěi nín pào yì xiǎo bēi

A little context goes a long way

In many Chinese tea shops, smelling and tasting before buying is a normal part of the conversation, especially when staff are already brewing tea for customers. Still, ask first rather than opening containers yourself. Use 您 (nín) for staff if you want to sound extra polite, and 你 (nǐ) is fine in casual shops. A small taste is usually enough; treat 试喝 as a sample, not a free drink.

    One thing to watch for

Saying 我可以喝这个茶吗? when you mean a small taste sample.

Try this instead: Use 试喝 for a sample: 这个茶可以试喝吗? (Can I taste this tea?). 喝 by itself sounds like you are asking for a full cup to drink, which is a different request.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1You want to smell the dry tea leaves before buying. What do you say?

    Show a sample answer

This uses 可以…吗? for a polite request and 一下 to make it sound light. 可以闻香吗? is also correct if the context is already clear.

2You are interested but not ready to buy. How do you say you want to smell first, then decide?

    Show a sample answer

再… means first…then…. You could also say 我想先闻一下,再决定; both are natural.

3Staff offer you a small cup. What is a polite short reply?

    Show a sample answer

This accepts the offer politely. 谢谢 alone also works, but 好的,谢谢 sounds warmer and more complete.

    Take this with you

Ask first with 可以…吗?, use 闻香 for smelling the tea and 试喝 for a small taste, and keep the request gentle with 一下.
