Reacting in Mandarin: Say "That's Great!" and Ask for Details

Learn to respond positively in Mandarin with 太好了 and 恭喜, then ask follow-up questions like 什么时候 and 怎么样 to show you are listening.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Two friends sharing an evening conversation

When someone shares good news, a simple nod is not enough. In Mandarin, you can react with a short, warm phrase such as 太好了 (tài hǎo le, that's great) or 恭喜 (gōngxǐ, congrats), then keep the conversation going by asking for details. This lesson teaches you exactly those listener moves: react first, then ask one or two simple questions. You will practice the neutral tone in 了, the falling-rising third tone in 好, and question words like 什么时候 (when) and 怎么样 (how). The goal is not to share your own news, but to show genuine interest in someone else's.

    By the end, you can…

    • react positively to good news with 太好了 and 恭喜.
    • ask for details using 什么时候, 在哪儿, and 怎么样.
    • keep a short conversation going as the listener.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    太好了!

    That's great!

    tài hǎo le

Use for almost any good news. The 了 is a neutral tone, light and short. It sounds warm and immediate.

    恭喜你!

    Congratulations!

    gōngxǐ nǐ

Use for achievements like a new job, graduation, or passing an exam. 你 can be omitted if you are speaking to a close friend.

    什么时候?

    When?

    shénme shíhou

A simple follow-up question. 时候 is often pronounced with a neutral second syllable in fast speech: shíhou.

    在哪儿?

    Where?

    zài nǎr

Ask about the location of an event. In northern China you will hear 哪儿; in many southern areas, 哪里 (nǎlǐ) is more common.

    怎么样?

How was it? / How is it?

    zěnme yàng

A general question about quality or result. Use it after someone describes an event to invite more detail.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

A natural listener response often has two parts: a positive reaction plus a question. The pattern is: 太好了! + question word + ? For example, if a friend says 我找到工作了 (wǒ zhǎodào gōngzuò le, I found a job), you can reply 太好了!什么时候开始? (tài hǎo le! shénme shíhou kāishǐ?, That's great! When do you start?). If the news is about a trip, you can say 太好了!在哪儿? (tài hǎo le! zài nǎr?, That's great! Where?). Notice that Chinese does not need a word for "do" or "does" in these questions. The question word simply goes where the answer would go. Also, 恭喜 is more specific than 太好了: use 恭喜 for achievements, and 太好了 for general good news.

    When to use it

Use 太好了 when someone tells you something pleasant, such as 我明天休息 (wǒ míngtiān xiūxi, I'm off tomorrow). Use 恭喜你 for formal or milestone events, such as 我结婚了 (wǒ jiéhūn le, I got married) or 我考上大学了 (wǒ kǎo shàng dàxué le, I got into university). After the reaction, ask only one or two questions. Too many questions can feel like an interview. A good sequence is: react, ask 什么时候 or 在哪儿, then respond with 真的吗? (zhēn de ma?, Really?) or 那太好了 (nà tài hǎo le, That's great then). If you are not sure whether the news is good, you can ask 是吗? (shì ma?, Is that so?) before reacting.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    B

    在哪儿?远吗?

Where is it? Is it far?zài nǎr? yuǎn ma

A little context goes a long way

In Mandarin conversation, reacting with 太好了 or 恭喜 is usually expected before you ask questions. A short, enthusiastic reaction shows you are listening. 恭喜 is common for weddings, graduations, and promotions, while 太好了 fits everyday good news. When speaking with older people or in formal settings, you can add 您 (nín, you polite) instead of 你, for example 恭喜您 (gōngxǐ nín). Also, a slight smile and an upward intonation on 太好了 make the reaction sound sincere.

    One thing to watch for

Using 恭喜 for everyday good news like "I'm off tomorrow."

Try this instead: 恭喜 is for achievements, not for general good news. For everyday news, say 太好了. For example, if a friend says 我明天休息 (wǒ míngtiān xiūxi, I'm off tomorrow), reply 太好了! (tài hǎo le!), not 恭喜你.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1Your friend says 我下个月去中国 (wǒ xià ge yuè qù Zhōngguó, I'm going to China next month). React positively and ask when.

    Show a sample answer

太好了!什么时候去? (tài hǎo le! shénme shíhou qù?)

太好了 reacts to the good news, and 什么时候 asks for the time. You can also say 恭喜你 if the trip is a special achievement, but 太好了 is more general.

2Your classmate says 我考试通过了 (wǒ kǎoshì tōngguò le, I passed the exam). What is a suitable reaction?

    Show a sample answer

    恭喜你! (gōngxǐ nǐ!)

Passing an exam is an achievement, so 恭喜你 is appropriate. 太好了 is also possible, but 恭喜 is more specific and warmer for this situation.

3You want to ask where a party will be. What do you say?

    Show a sample answer

    在哪儿? (zài nǎr?)

在哪儿 asks for a location. In southern China, 在哪里 (zài nǎlǐ) is also common and equally correct.

    Take this with you

React first with 太好了 or 恭喜, then ask one simple question like 什么时候 or 在哪儿. Keep it short, warm, and focused on the other person.
