Includes practice questions and sample answers.

Sometimes you need to change a plan you already made. In Mandarin, this is not just about making a new plan; it is about apologizing and suggesting a new time. This lesson teaches you how to say that something came up, apologize, and propose a different day or time. You will learn key phrases such as 改到星期天好吗? (Can we change it to Sunday?) and 对不起,我有事 (Sorry, something came up). You will also practice a short dialogue and avoid common mistakes. By the end, you will be able to handle plan changes politely in everyday Chinese.

    By the end, you can…

    • apologize for changing a plan in Mandarin.
    • suggest a new time or day using 改到...好吗?
    • explain that something came up using 有事.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    对不起,我有事。

    Sorry, something came up.

    Duìbuqǐ, wǒ yǒu shì.

Use this to apologize and give a vague reason for canceling or changing plans. 有事 literally means 'have things (to do)'.

    改到星期天好吗?

Can we change it to Sunday?

    Gǎi dào xīngqītiān hǎo ma?

Use 改到 + [new time] + 好吗? to suggest a new time. 星期天 means Sunday.

    我们改天吧。

    Let's do it another day.

    Wǒmen gǎitiān ba.

Use this to postpone without setting a new time. 改天 means 'another day'.

    不好意思,我临时有事。

Sorry, something came up at the last minute.

Bù hǎoyìsi, wǒ línshí yǒu shì.

不好意思 is a softer apology than 对不起. 临时 means 'at the last minute'.

    那星期六下午怎么样?

    How about Saturday afternoon then?

    Nà xīngqīliù xiàwǔ zěnmeyàng?

Use 那...怎么样? to counter-suggest after a change. 星期六 means Saturday.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

To suggest a new time, use 改到 + [time] + 好吗? For example, 改到星期天好吗? (Can we change it to Sunday?) or 改到明天下午好吗? (Can we change it to tomorrow afternoon?). The verb 改 means 'change', and 到 indicates the new target. Adding 好吗? makes it a polite question. You can also use 改天 (another day) without a specific time: 我们改天吧。 (Let's do it another day.)

    When to use it

Use these phrases when you need to cancel or move a plan you already made. Start with an apology: 对不起 or 不好意思. Then give a reason, even if vague: 我有事 (I have things to do) or 我临时有事 (something came up at the last minute). Finally, suggest a new time: 改到星期天好吗? If you don't have a new time yet, say 我们改天吧。 This shows you still want to meet but need to postpone.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    对不起,我明天有事。我们改到星期天好吗?

Sorry, I have something tomorrow. Can we change it to Sunday?Duìbuqǐ, wǒ míngtiān yǒu shì. Wǒmen gǎi dào xīngqītiān hǎo ma?
    B

    没问题。星期天几点?

No problem. What time on Sunday?Méi wèntí. Xīngqītiān jǐ diǎn?
    A

    下午三点怎么样?

How about 3 p.m.?Xiàwǔ sān diǎn zěnmeyàng?
    B

    好的,星期天下午三点见。

Okay, see you Sunday at 3 p.m.Hǎo de, xīngqītiān xiàwǔ sān diǎn jiàn.

A little context goes a long way

In Chinese, 对不起 is a sincere apology, while 不好意思 is lighter and often used for small inconveniences. When changing plans, it is common to give a vague reason like 有事 rather than detailed explanations. Directly suggesting a new time with 改到...好吗? is polite and keeps the conversation moving. Avoid over-apologizing; one clear apology is usually enough.

    One thing to watch for

Using 改到 with a duration instead of a new time, e.g., 改到星期天 (thinking it means 'change for Sunday' but actually it means 'change to Sunday').

Try this instead: 改到 must be followed by the new specific time or day. For example, 改到星期天 means 'change to Sunday'. If you want to say 'change for Sunday', you still use 改到星期天. To say 'change the plan', use 改计划. Do not say 改星期天 without 到.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you say 'Sorry, something came up' in Mandarin?

    Show a sample answer

    对不起,我有事。

This uses 对不起 for apology and 我有事 for 'I have things to do'. 不好意思,我有事 is also acceptable and slightly softer.

2How do you suggest changing a plan to Sunday?

    Show a sample answer

    改到星期天好吗?

This uses 改到 + 星期天 + 好吗? to politely suggest Sunday. You can also say 我们改到星期天,好吗? with 我们 for 'we'.

    3What does 改天 mean?

    Show a sample answer

    Another day.

改天 is used to postpone without setting a specific time, as in 我们改天吧。 (Let's do it another day.)

    Take this with you

When changing plans in Chinese, apologize first (对不起 or 不好意思), give a brief reason (我有事), and suggest a new time with 改到...好吗? or 我们改天吧。 Keep it polite and simple.
