Repairing Misunderstandings in Mandarin Chinese: Saying 'Let Me Rephrase That'
Learn Mandarin repair strategies to fix misunderstandings mid-conversation, including 我换个说法 and 我不是这个意思, distinct from negotiating meaning.

When a Mandarin conversation goes wrong, you need repair strategies, not just clarification questions. Repair means you notice a problem and fix your own or your partner's wording. This lesson teaches five practical phrases for rephrasing, correcting, and confirming understanding. You will practice 我换个说法 (let me rephrase), 我不是这个意思 (that's not what I meant), 我是说…… (what I mean is...), 你理解错了 (you misunderstood), and 我表达得不太清楚 (I didn't express that clearly). These differ from negotiating meaning: negotiation checks whether a message worked, while repair actively replaces a failed wording. Use them when a listener looks confused, answers the wrong question, or reacts emotionally to something you did not intend.
By the end, you can…
- rephrase my own sentence after noticing confusion.
- correct a misunderstanding without blaming the listener.
- distinguish repair phrases from simple clarification questions.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

我换个说法。
Let me rephrase that.
wǒ huàn ge shuōfa
Use when your first wording caused confusion; 换个 means 'change to another' and 说法 means 'way of saying'.
我不是这个意思。
That's not what I meant.
wǒ bú shì zhège yìsi
Use after someone reacts to a meaning you did not intend; softens correction by focusing on your meaning, not their mistake.
我是说……
What I mean is...
wǒ shì shuō...
Introduces a clearer version of your point; often follows 我不是这个意思.
你理解错了。
You misunderstood.
nǐ lǐjiě cuò le
Direct and potentially face-threatening; use with friends or when clarity matters more than politeness. Softer: 可能我没说清楚.
我表达得不太清楚。
I didn't express that clearly.
wǒ biǎodá de bú tài qīngchu
Self-blaming repair that protects the listener's face; excellent in workplace or formal settings.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.
Make it make sense
Useful pattern
The core repair pattern is 我 + 换个说法 / 不是这个意思 / 我是说. 我换个说法 replaces your wording: 我换个说法,这个项目下周开始。 'Let me rephrase: this project starts next week.' 我不是这个意思 denies the listener's interpretation: 我不是这个意思,我是说时间不够。 'That's not what I meant; I mean there isn't enough time.' Notice that 我是说 introduces the corrected content, often after a pause. For listener-side repair, use 你理解错了 or the softer 你可能理解错了. The pattern 我表达得不太清楚 + 其实…… moves responsibility to yourself: 我表达得不太清楚,其实我想问价格。 'I didn't express that clearly; actually I wanted to ask about the price.'
When to use it
Use repair when the conversation has already gone off track, not when you simply need repetition. If you did not hear, say 请再说一遍 'please say that again.' If you heard but do not understand, ask 这是什么意思? 'what does this mean?' Repair is different: you or your partner produced a wrong interpretation, and you replace it. Use 我换个说法 when your own sentence was ambiguous. Use 我不是这个意思 when someone takes offense or answers the wrong question. Use 我表达得不太清楚 in formal or hierarchical situations, because it avoids saying 你错了. With close friends, 你理解错了 is acceptable, but adding 可能 'maybe' reduces friction: 你可能理解错了。
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
这个方案我觉得不行。
I don't think this plan works.zhège fāng'àn wǒ juéde bù xíng你为什么觉得我的方案不好?
Why do you think my plan is bad?nǐ wèishénme juéde wǒ de fāng'àn bù hǎo我不是这个意思。我换个说法:方案的方向很好,但是时间太紧。
That's not what I meant. Let me rephrase: the direction is good, but the timeline is too tight.wǒ bú shì zhège yìsi. wǒ huàn ge shuōfa: fāng'àn de fāngxiàng hěn hǎo, dànshì shíjiān tài jǐn啊,我理解错了。你是说时间问题,不是方案问题。
Ah, I misunderstood. You mean it's a timing issue, not a plan issue.a, wǒ lǐjiě cuò le. nǐ shì shuō shíjiān wèntí, bú shì fāng'àn wèntíA little context goes a long way
In Mandarin conversation, direct repair like 你理解错了 can sound blunt because it points at the listener's error. Many speakers prefer self-directed repair, such as 我表达得不太清楚 or 可能我没说清楚, especially with elders, teachers, or colleagues. This protects the other person's face while still fixing the problem. With close friends, direct repair is common and not necessarily rude. Tone and relationship matter more than the phrase alone.
One thing to watch for
Using 我换个说法 to mean 'I want to change the topic.'
Try this instead: 我换个说法 means 'let me rephrase the same point,' not 'let's talk about something else.' To change the topic, say 我们换个话题吧 (wǒmen huàn ge huàtí ba) 'let's change the topic.' Example: 我换个说法,我是说预算不够。 'Let me rephrase: I mean the budget is insufficient.' Do not use it to introduce an unrelated subject.
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1Your colleague looks upset after you say 这个想法有问题. You meant the timing, not the idea. What repair phrase fits best?
Show a sample answer
我不是这个意思。我是说时间有问题,不是想法有问题。
This denies the unintended meaning and supplies the intended one. 我表达得不太清楚 also works if you want to take more blame.
2You said 下周开会, but your listener thought you meant 下个月. Which phrase rephrases your own wording?
Show a sample answer
我换个说法:是下周,不是下个月。
我换个说法 signals that you are replacing your earlier wording. 我是说…… could also work, but it is more often used after denying a misunderstanding.
3In a formal meeting, your manager misunderstood your question. Which repair is safest?
Show a sample answer
可能我没说清楚。我想问的是预算。
This self-directed repair protects your manager's face. 你理解错了 is grammatically possible but risky in a hierarchical setting.
When Mandarin conversation breaks down, repair the wording, not the person: use 我换个说法 to rephrase, 我不是这个意思 plus 我是说 to correct meaning, and 我表达得不太清楚 to soften blame in formal settings.
