Chinese: Ongoing Actions vs. Habitual Actions with 在 and 常常
Learn to use 在 (zài) for actions happening now and time words like 每天 (měitiān) or 常常 (chángcháng) for habits, so you can say 'I'm reading now' versus 'I read every night.'

Chinese does not change verb endings to show whether an action is happening right now or happens regularly. Instead, it uses separate words. For an action in progress, put 在 (zài) before the verb: 我在看书 (wǒ zài kàn shū), 'I am reading.' For a habit, use a time expression such as 每天 (měitiān, 'every day'), 常常 (chángcháng, 'often'), or 晚上 (wǎnshang, 'in the evening') and do not use 在. So 我每天晚上看书 (wǒ měitiān wǎnshang kàn shū) means 'I read every night.' The verb 看 (kàn) stays the same in both sentences. This lesson teaches you to choose the right pattern and to avoid mixing 在 with a habitual time word.
By the end, you can…
- say what I am doing right now using 在 before a verb.
- describe a regular habit using time words like 每天 and 常常 without 在.
- tell the difference between 我在看书 and 我每天晚上看书.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

我在看书。
I am reading (right now).
wǒ zài kàn shū.
Use 在 before the verb for an action happening at this moment.
我每天晚上看书。
I read every night.
wǒ měitiān wǎnshang kàn shū.
每天 and 晚上 make this a habit; do not add 在.
他常常喝茶。
He often drinks tea.
tā chángcháng hē chá.
常常 signals a repeated habit, so no 在 is used.
你在做什么?
What are you doing (right now)?
nǐ zài zuò shénme?
A common question about an action in progress.
我周末常常看电影。
I often watch movies on weekends.
wǒ zhōumò chángcháng kàn diànyǐng.
周末 gives the regular time, and 常常 shows frequency.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

Useful pattern
For an action happening now, the pattern is 主语 + 在 + 动词: 我在吃饭 (wǒ zài chī fàn), 'I am eating.' For a habit, the pattern is 主语 + 时间词 + 动词: 我每天吃饭 (wǒ měitiān chī fàn), 'I eat every day.' The verb itself does not change. 在 can also appear with 正在 (zhèngzài) for extra emphasis: 我正在看书 (wǒ zhèngzài kàn shū), 'I am reading right now.'
When to use it
Use 在 when the action is happening at the moment of speaking, often answering 你在做什么? (nǐ zài zuò shénme, 'What are you doing?'). Use a time word such as 每天 (měitiān), 常常 (chángcháng), 晚上 (wǎnshang), or 周末 (zhōumò) for habits. Do not combine 在 with 每天 in the same clause: say 我每天看书 (wǒ měitiān kàn shū), not 我每天在看书. If you want to say you are reading every night this week as a temporary routine, you can say 我这几天每天晚上都在看书 (wǒ zhè jǐ tiān měitiān wǎnshang dōu zài kàn shū), but this is more advanced.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
你在做什么?
What are you doing?nǐ zài zuò shénme?我在看书。你呢?
I am reading. And you?wǒ zài kàn shū. nǐ ne?我常常晚上看书,但是现在我在做饭。
I often read in the evening, but right now I am cooking.wǒ chángcháng wǎnshang kàn shū, dànshì xiànzài wǒ zài zuò fàn.我每天晚上也看书,可是今天我在看手机。
I also read every night, but today I am looking at my phone.wǒ měitiān wǎnshang yě kàn shū, kěshì jīntiān wǒ zài kàn shǒujī.A little context goes a long way
In everyday Mandarin, 在 is common in spoken conversation for actions happening now, while time words like 每天 and 常常 are neutral and used in both speech and writing. Chinese does not require a separate progressive tense, so learners should focus on choosing the right time word or 在 rather than changing the verb. Politeness does not change these patterns, but adding 请 (qǐng, 'please') or a softener like 一下 (yíxià) can make requests sound gentler.
One thing to watch for
Saying 我每天在看书 (wǒ měitiān zài kàn shū) to mean 'I read every day.'
Try this instead: Do not use 在 with a habitual time word like 每天. Say 我每天看书 (wǒ měitiān kàn shū). Use 在 only for an action happening now: 我在看书 (wǒ zài kàn shū), 'I am reading.'
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1How do you say 'I am drinking tea' right now?
Show a sample answer
我在喝茶。
在 before the verb 喝 marks the action as happening now. 我正在喝茶 (wǒ zhèngzài hē chá) is also correct for extra emphasis.
2How do you say 'She often watches movies'?
Show a sample answer
她常常看电影。
常常 shows a habit, so no 在 is needed. 她常看电影 (tā cháng kàn diànyǐng) is also acceptable; 常 is a shorter form of 常常.
3Which is correct for 'I read every night': 我每天晚上在看书 or 我每天晚上看书?
Show a sample answer
我每天晚上看书。
每天晚上 is a habitual time expression, so 在 should not be used. The version with 在 sounds like a temporary ongoing action, which is not the intended meaning here.
Use 在 for actions happening right now; use time words like 每天 or 常常 for habits, and keep the verb unchanged.
