Chinese for Badminton Meetups: Choosing Between 练球 and 打比分
Learn to ask whether your badminton group will do a practice rally, play a scoring game, or warm up first, using 练球, 打比分 and 先热身 in casual Mandarin negotiation.

At a Chinese badminton meetup, the first few minutes often involve a quick group decision: do we rally gently, or start keeping score right away? Two everyday phrases carry this choice. 练球 (liàn qiú) means hitting practice rallies, usually without counting points, to find rhythm and warm up strokes. 打比分 (dǎ bǐfēn) means playing with scoring, whether a casual game to 21 or a proper match. A third phrase, 先热身 (xiān rèshēn), means warm up first, and it is the natural way to suggest a gentle start before competition. This lesson teaches you to ask, suggest and agree in casual spoken Mandarin, so you can join the decision instead of standing silently at the sideline.
By the end, you can…
- ask whether the group will do a practice rally or play a scoring game
- suggest warming up first before starting a match
- agree or disagree casually with a proposed plan at the court
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

我们先练球还是打比分?
Shall we do a practice rally first, or play a scoring game?
wǒmen xiān liàn qiú háishì dǎ bǐfēn?
A direct either-or question. Use it when the group has just arrived and nobody has decided yet. 还是 is the natural choice for offering two options in a question.
先热身吧,别急着打比分。
Let's warm up first, no rush to play a scoring game.
xiān rèshēn ba, bié jízhe dǎ bǐfēn.
A friendly suggestion. 吧 softens the sentence into a proposal, and 别急着 means don't rush to. Good when you want a gentle start.
练球十分钟,然后打比分,行吗?
Practice rally for ten minutes, then play scoring, okay?
liàn qiú shí fēnzhōng, ránhòu dǎ bǐfēn, xíng ma?
A concrete plan with a time limit. 行吗 asks for agreement without pressure, very common in casual meetups.
我都可以,你们定。
I'm fine with either, you all decide.
wǒ dōu kěyǐ, nǐmen dìng.
A polite way to step back from the decision. 都可以 means either option works for me, and 你们定 hands the choice to the group.
那先练球,热开了再打比分。
Then let's rally first, and once we're warmed up, play scoring.
nà xiān liàn qiú, rè kāi le zài dǎ bǐfēn.
A confirming reply that links the two stages. 热开了 means warmed up and loose, a common court expression.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.
Make it make sense
Useful pattern
The pattern 先……再…… (xiān... zài...) means first do one thing, then do another. It is perfect for sequencing a badminton session: 先热身,再练球 (warm up first, then rally), or 先练球,再打比分 (rally first, then play scoring). To offer a choice instead of a sequence, use A 还是 B: 练球还是打比分? To ask for agreement after a plan, add 行吗 or 好吗 at the end: 先练球,行吗? Notice that 打比分 uses 打, the general verb for playing a sport or game, while 练球 uses 练, to practice. Keeping these verbs straight makes your meaning clear immediately.
When to use it
Use 练球 when nobody is counting points and players are feeding shuttles or rallying to warm up strokes. Use 打比分 the moment someone suggests keeping score, even a friendly game to 21. Use 先热身 when you arrive cold and want a few minutes of movement before anything competitive. In casual groups, the decision is usually collective, so a short question like 练球还是打比分? fits better than a long explanation. If you are the guest or the newest player, 我都可以,你们定 is a safe, friendly reply. If you want a compromise, propose a short block: 练球十分钟,然后打比分,行吗? This respects both players who want to warm up and those who came to compete.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
人都到齐了,我们先练球还是打比分?
Everyone's here. Shall we rally first or play scoring?rén dōu dàoqí le, wǒmen xiān liàn qiú háishì dǎ bǐfēn?先热身吧,我还没活动开。
Let's warm up first, I haven't loosened up yet.xiān rèshēn ba, wǒ hái méi huódòng kāi.行,那练球十分钟,再打比分。
Okay, then rally for ten minutes, then play scoring.xíng, nà liàn qiú shí fēnzhōng, zài dǎ bǐfēn.可以,我都可以,你们定。
Sure, either is fine with me, you all decide.kěyǐ, wǒ dōu kěyǐ, nǐmen dìng.A little context goes a long way
Chinese badminton meetups often run on group consensus rather than a fixed schedule. A short, casual question is usually welcome, and 吧, 行吗 and 好吗 soften suggestions so they sound friendly rather than demanding. If you are new to the group, offering 我都可以,你们定 shows flexibility. Avoid treating 打比分 as always serious: in casual play it often just means keeping score for fun.
One thing to watch for
Saying 玩比分 to mean play a scoring game.
Try this instead: Use 打比分 for playing with scoring. 玩 is fine for games in general, but with 比分 the natural verb is 打: 我们打比分吧 (let's play scoring). Saying 玩比分 sounds odd to most players.
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1How do you ask whether the group will rally first or play scoring?
Show a sample answer
我们先练球还是打比分?
This uses the A 还是 B pattern to offer two clear options. You could also say 先练球,还是先打比分? with 先 repeated for extra clarity.
2A friend wants to start a match immediately. How do you suggest warming up first?
Show a sample answer
先热身吧,别急着打比分。
先热身吧 proposes warming up, and 别急着 softens the request. A simpler alternative is 先热身,好吗? which asks for agreement directly.
3You have no preference and want the group to decide. What can you say?
Show a sample answer
我都可以,你们定。
This politely declines to choose while staying involved. 都行 is a common casual variant with the same meaning.
Use 练球 for unscored rallies, 打比分 for playing with scoring, and 先热身 to suggest a gentle start; sequence them with 先……再…… and soften suggestions with 吧 or 行吗.
