Discussing Pottery Glaze Test Results in Mandarin Chinese

Learn to talk about glaze tests in a pottery studio: describe 釉料 (glaze), 试片 (test tiles), and 烧出来 (fired results), ask about outcomes, and share your own observations in a natural, artistic register.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Two friends sharing an evening conversation

In a pottery studio, talking about glaze tests is a common and practical conversation. You will need to describe what you applied, how it was fired, and what the final surface looks like. This lesson focuses on three core terms: 釉料 (glaze), 试片 (test tile), and 烧出来 (the fired result). You will learn to ask staff or fellow potters about their tests, comment on color and texture, and share your own results without overclaiming. The register is artistic and descriptive, suitable for a casual creative meetup. All examples are in Mandarin Chinese with pinyin and tone marks.

    By the end, you can…

    • name and describe 釉料 (glaze) and 试片 (test tile) in a studio conversation.
    • ask about and comment on 烧出来 (fired result) using descriptive language.
    • share my own glaze test observations and ask staff for their impressions.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    这块试片烧出来是什么颜色?

What color did this test tile come out?

Zhè kuài shìpiàn shāo chūlái shì shénme yánsè?

Use when pointing to a specific test tile and asking about its fired color.

    我用的釉料是青釉,烧出来偏灰。

The glaze I used was celadon, and it came out grayish.

Wǒ yòng de yòuliào shì qīngyòu, shāo chūlái piān huī.

Share your own result: name the glaze type and describe the fired tone.

    这个釉面摸起来很润,像玉一样。

This glaze surface feels very smooth, like jade.

Zhège yòumiàn mō qǐlái hěn rùn, xiàng yù yīyàng.

Describe tactile quality of a fired glaze; useful for artistic feedback.

    你觉得这个试片烧得怎么样?

What do you think of how this test tile fired?

Nǐ juéde zhège shìpiàn shāo de zěnmeyàng?

Ask for someone's opinion on a test tile's outcome; polite and open-ended.

    我想再试一次,把釉料调稀一点。

I want to try again, making the glaze a bit thinner.

Wǒ xiǎng zài shì yī cì, bǎ yòuliào tiáo xī yīdiǎn.

State your next experiment plan after seeing a test result.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

To describe a fired result, use 烧出来 + adjective or color. For example: 烧出来偏蓝 (came out bluish), 烧出来很亮 (came out very shiny), 烧出来有点粗糙 (came out a bit rough). You can also say 烧出来变成… (came out turning into…): 烧出来变成深绿色 (came out turning dark green). This pattern keeps the focus on the outcome, not the process. When you want to mention the glaze, put it before: 这个釉料烧出来偏黄 (this glaze came out yellowish).

    When to use it

Use these phrases when you are standing at a glaze test table with test tiles in front of you. For example, pick up a tile and say: 这块试片烧出来很均匀 (this test tile came out very even). If you are asking staff, say: 请问这个釉料烧出来通常是什么效果? (May I ask what effect this glaze usually has when fired?). Avoid making claims about firing schedules or studio policies; instead, ask: 你们一般怎么烧? (How do you usually fire?) This keeps the conversation about observation and shared experience.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    你看这块试片,烧出来是深蓝色,但边缘有点绿。

Look at this test tile, it came out deep blue, but the edges are a bit green.Nǐ kàn zhè kuài shìpiàn, shāo chūlái shì shēn lánsè, dàn biānyuán yǒudiǎn lǜ.
    B

    真的吗?我用的釉料也是这个,烧出来却偏灰。

Really? The glaze I used was also this one, but it came out grayish.Zhēn de ma? Wǒ yòng de yòuliào yě shì zhège, shāo chūlái què piān huī.
    A

    可能跟厚度有关。你涂了几层?

It might be related to thickness. How many layers did you apply?Kěnéng gēn hòudù yǒuguān. Nǐ tú le jǐ céng?
    B

    两层。下次我想涂三层,看看烧出来会不会更蓝。

Two layers. Next time I want to apply three layers, to see if it comes out bluer.Liǎng céng. Xià cì wǒ xiǎng tú sān céng, kànkan shāo chūlái huì bu huì gèng lán.

A little context goes a long way

In Chinese pottery studios, feedback on glaze tests is often tentative and observational. People may say 我觉得 (I feel) or 看起来 (it looks) rather than making absolute claims. When asking staff, use 请问 (may I ask) to keep it polite. Avoid comparing your results to commercial products or claiming a glaze is 'the best'; instead, focus on personal experiments and shared curiosity.

    One thing to watch for

Confusing 烧好了 (the firing is finished) with a description of how the fired glaze looks.

Try this instead: 烧好了 tells you that the firing is complete; 这块试片烧出来偏蓝 describes the resulting bluish appearance. For this lesson, name the piece first and then describe its fired appearance. Other sentence patterns can include an object after 烧出来: 我烧出来了一个漂亮的杯子 (I produced a beautiful cup through firing). Choose the pattern that matches what you want to describe.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How would you ask a studio mate what color a specific test tile came out?

    Show a sample answer

    这块试片烧出来是什么颜色?

Put the test tile first, then ask about its color after firing with 烧出来是什么颜色. You could also ask 这块试片烧出来怎么样? (How did this test tile turn out after firing?) for a more general description.

2Translate: 'The glaze I used came out a bit rough.'

    Show a sample answer

    我用的釉料烧出来有点粗糙。

Name the glaze, then describe the surface after firing with 烧出来有点粗糙. 有点 makes the roughness slight. The sentence describes the resulting appearance rather than just saying the firing is complete.

3What phrase would you use to suggest trying a thinner glaze next time?

    Show a sample answer

    我想再试一次,把釉料调稀一点。

This uses 把 construction to say 'make the glaze thinner'. You could also say 下次釉料调稀一点试试, which is equally natural.

    Take this with you

Use 釉料 for the glaze itself, 试片 for the test tile, and 烧出来 to describe the fired result. Keep your comments observational and ask open-ended questions like 烧出来怎么样? to invite shared reflection.
