Disagreeing Politely in Mandarin Chinese: Softening Phrases for Harmony
Learn to disagree politely in Mandarin using phrases like 我明白你的意思,但是... and 我不太确定我同意. Maintain harmony in conversations.

In Mandarin Chinese, direct disagreement can sound harsh. To keep conversations harmonious, use softening phrases that acknowledge the other person's view before expressing your own. This lesson teaches you five key phrases to disagree politely, along with a model dialogue and practice. You'll learn to say 'I see your point, but...' and 'I'm not sure I agree' in natural, respectful Mandarin. We focus on mild disagreement, not strong opposition. By the end, you'll be able to navigate differences of opinion without causing offense.

我明白你的意思,但是...
I see your point, but...
Wǒ míngbai nǐ de yìsi, dànshì...
Use this to acknowledge the other person's view before introducing a contrasting opinion. It softens the disagreement.
我不太确定我同意。
I'm not sure I agree.
Wǒ bú tài quèdìng wǒ tóngyì.
A gentle way to express doubt about agreement. The '不太' (bú tài) softens the statement, making it less direct.
你说得有道理,不过...
You have a point, however...
Nǐ shuō de yǒu dàolǐ, búguò...
Similar to '我明白你的意思,但是...' but slightly more complimentary. Use '不过' (búguò) to introduce your differing view.
我可能想得不一样。
I might see it differently.
Wǒ kěnéng xiǎng de bù yíyàng.
A soft way to say you have a different perspective. '可能' (kěnéng) adds uncertainty, reducing confrontation.
我理解你的看法,但我有不同意见。
I understand your view, but I have a different opinion.
Wǒ lǐjiě nǐ de kànfǎ, dàn wǒ yǒu bùtóng yìjiàn.
A bit more formal, suitable for professional settings. It clearly states disagreement while respecting the other person.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

Useful pattern
A common pattern for polite disagreement is: Acknowledge + 但是/不过 + Your view. For example, '我明白你的意思,但是我觉得这个方案需要更多时间。' (I see your point, but I think this plan needs more time.) The first part shows you listened, and the second part introduces your opinion. Another pattern is '你说得有道理,不过...' which is slightly more complimentary. You can also use '我可能想得不一样' to soften your stance. Remember to use a gentle tone; Mandarin relies on tone and context to convey politeness.
When to use it
Use these phrases in situations where maintaining harmony is important, such as discussions with colleagues, friends, or family. For example, if a friend suggests a restaurant you don't like, you can say, '你说得有道理,不过我今天想吃辣的。' (You have a point, but I want something spicy today.) In a work meeting, '我理解你的看法,但我有不同意见' is appropriate. Avoid these phrases in emergencies where quick, direct agreement is needed. Also, if you strongly disagree, these phrases might be too soft; but for this lesson, we focus on mild disagreement.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
我觉得我们应该去看电影。
I think we should go see a movie.Wǒ juéde wǒmen yīnggāi qù kàn diànyǐng.我明白你的意思,但是最近电影票很贵。
I see your point, but movie tickets are expensive lately.Wǒ míngbai nǐ de yìsi, dànshì zuìjìn diànyǐng piào hěn guì.你说得有道理,不过我们可以看早场,便宜一些。
You have a point, however we can watch a morning show, it's cheaper.Nǐ shuō de yǒu dàolǐ, búguò wǒmen kěyǐ kàn zǎochǎng, piányi yìxiē.我可能想得不一样,早场我起不来。
I might see it differently, I can't get up for a morning show.Wǒ kěnéng xiǎng de bù yíyàng, zǎochǎng wǒ qǐ bù lái.A little context goes a long way
In Chinese communication, indirectness and face-saving are valued. Disagreeing politely shows respect and preserves relationships. The phrases here use softening words like 可能 (maybe), 不太 (not very), and 不过 (however) to reduce confrontation. In formal settings, using '我理解你的看法' is more appropriate than casual phrases. Also, tone matters: a gentle tone reinforces politeness. Avoid direct '不' (no) at the start of a sentence, as it can sound blunt.
One thing to watch for
Learners often say '我不同意' (Wǒ bù tóngyì) directly, which can sound abrupt.
Try this instead: Soften it with '我不太确定我同意' (Wǒ bú tài quèdìng wǒ tóngyì) or '我可能想得不一样' (Wǒ kěnéng xiǎng de bù yíyàng). For example, instead of '我不同意你的看法', say '我明白你的意思,但是我有不同的看法'.
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

Show a sample answer
我明白你的意思,但是我想吃中国菜。
This uses the pattern 'acknowledge + 但是 + preference'. It's polite and clear. Alternatively, '你说得有道理,不过我想吃中国菜' also works.
2What phrase means 'I'm not sure I agree' in Mandarin?
Show a sample answer
我不太确定我同意。
This phrase uses '不太' to soften the disagreement. It's a direct translation but natural in context. You could also say '我不太同意' but it's slightly more direct.
3In a work meeting, your colleague proposes a plan you disagree with. What would you say?
Show a sample answer
我理解你的看法,但我有不同意见。
This is formal and respectful, suitable for professional settings. It acknowledges their view and states your disagreement without being harsh.
To disagree politely in Mandarin, always acknowledge the other person's view first, then use a soft contrast like 但是 or 不过. Keep your tone gentle and use phrases like 我明白你的意思 or 你说得有道理. This maintains harmony and respect.
