Planning a Party in Mandarin: Assigning Courses and Tasks

Learn to plan a party in Mandarin by assigning dishes, drinks, and tasks. Use 负责, 带, 准备, and 要不要 to coordinate contributions politely.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.

When you plan a party in Mandarin, you are not ordering food for yourself; you are coordinating what others will bring or do. This lesson teaches you to assign courses and tasks using 负责 (fùzé, be responsible for), 带 (dài, bring), 准备 (zhǔnbèi, prepare), and 要不要 (yào bu yào, shall we / do you want to). You will practice making suggestions, accepting or declining, and confirming plans. The focus is on polite, collaborative language that avoids sounding bossy. By the end, you can organize a potluck or small gathering in clear, natural Mandarin.

    By the end, you can…

    • suggest who brings which dish or drink using 负责 and 带.
    • ask others what they want to bring with 要不要 or 你想带什么.
    • accept or decline a party task politely.
    • confirm a plan by repeating the assigned item and person.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    你负责带什么?

What are you responsible for bringing?

    nǐ fùzé dài shénme?

Use when checking a specific person's contribution. 负责 stresses responsibility, not just bringing.

    我带一个凉菜吧。

    I'll bring a cold dish.

wǒ dài yí ge liángcài ba.

凉菜 (liángcài) is a cold appetizer. 吧 (ba) softens the suggestion, making it sound friendly.

    你要不要带饮料?

Do you want to bring drinks?

nǐ yào bu yào dài yǐnliào?

A gentle way to assign drinks. 要不要 is a neutral yes/no question, less direct than 你带饮料.

    我负责准备水果。

I'll be responsible for preparing fruit.

    wǒ fùzé zhǔnbèi shuǐguǒ.

Use 负责准备 when you take charge of a task, not just bringing an item.

    我们可以点外卖。

    We can order takeout.

    wǒmen kěyǐ diǎn wàimài.

点外卖 (diǎn wàimài) means order delivery. Useful when no one wants to cook a main dish.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

To assign a course or task, use 你负责 + verb + object. For example, 你负责带甜点 (nǐ fùzé dài tiándiǎn, you're responsible for bringing dessert). To volunteer, say 我负责 + verb + object, e.g., 我负责买酒 (wǒ fùzé mǎi jiǔ, I'll be responsible for buying alcohol). If you want to suggest more softly, add 吧: 你带沙拉吧 (nǐ dài shālā ba, how about you bring salad?). To ask for someone's preference, use 你想带什么? (nǐ xiǎng dài shénme?, what do you want to bring?). These patterns keep the planning collaborative.

    When to use it

Use 负责 when the task is essential and you want to confirm commitment. Use 带 for physical items like dishes or drinks. Use 准备 for tasks that involve making something, such as 准备水果 (prepare fruit) or 准备游戏 (prepare games). When you are not sure who should do what, ask 谁负责带饮料? (shéi fùzé dài yǐnliào?, who is responsible for bringing drinks?). If someone declines, respond with 没关系,我来吧 (méi guānxi, wǒ lái ba, it's okay, I'll do it). This shows flexibility and keeps the tone positive.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    我们周末开派对,你负责带什么?

We're having a party this weekend. What are you responsible for bringing?wǒmen zhōumò kāi pàiduì, nǐ fùzé dài shénme?
    B

    我带一个凉菜吧。你要不要带饮料?

I'll bring a cold dish. Do you want to bring drinks?wǒ dài yí ge liángcài ba. nǐ yào bu yào dài yǐnliào?
    A

    好啊,我负责买饮料。那谁准备主食?

Sure, I'll be responsible for buying drinks. Then who will prepare the main food?hǎo a, wǒ fùzé mǎi yǐnliào. nà shéi zhǔnbèi zhǔshí?
    B

    我们可以点外卖,这样比较方便。

We can order takeout, that's more convenient.wǒmen kěyǐ diǎn wàimài, zhèyàng bǐjiào fāngbiàn.

A little context goes a long way

In Chinese gatherings, especially among friends, it is common to assign contributions explicitly to avoid duplication and reduce the host's burden. Using 吧 or 要不要 softens requests, making them sound like suggestions rather than commands. Directly saying 你带饮料 without a softener can sound abrupt, so add 吧 or frame it as a question. Also, 负责 implies reliability; if you accept a task, follow through. If you must decline, offer an alternative or apologize briefly, e.g., 对不起,我那天有事,不能带 (duìbuqǐ, wǒ nà tiān yǒu shì, bù néng dài).

    One thing to watch for

Using 点 (diǎn) to mean 'bring' a dish, as in 我点一个凉菜 (wǒ diǎn yí ge liángcài).

Try this instead: 点 means 'order' (like ordering in a restaurant). For a party contribution, use 带 (dài) or 准备 (zhǔnbèi). Say 我带一个凉菜 (wǒ dài yí ge liángcài) or 我准备一个凉菜 (wǒ zhǔnbèi yí ge liángcài).

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How would you ask a friend to be responsible for bringing drinks?

    Show a sample answer

    你负责带饮料,好吗?

This uses 负责带 to assign responsibility and 好吗 to seek agreement. You could also say 你要不要带饮料? which is softer.

2You want to volunteer to prepare fruit. What do you say?

    Show a sample answer

    我负责准备水果。

我负责准备 clearly states you take charge of preparing fruit. Alternatively, 我来准备水果 is also natural.

3Someone asks 谁负责带甜点? and you want to decline politely. What can you say?

    Show a sample answer

    对不起,我不能带甜点,但我可以带饮料。

This politely declines and offers an alternative, showing willingness to help. You could also say 不好意思,我那天没空。

    Take this with you

When planning a party in Mandarin, use 负责 to assign responsibility, 带 for items, and 准备 for tasks. Soften requests with 吧 or 要不要 to keep the tone collaborative.
