Confirming Understanding in Mandarin: Paraphrase to Check (If I Understand Correctly...)

Learn Mandarin phrases to paraphrase a speaker's point and confirm you understood, e.g., 如果我理解得对的话… Practice active listening with polite checks, clarifications, and follow-up questions.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A quiet illustrated scene for evening language practice

Active listening in Mandarin often means checking your understanding by paraphrasing what you heard. Instead of only nodding, you can say 如果我理解得对的话… (If I understand correctly…) and then restate the other person's point in your own words. This lesson teaches a small set of patterns to confirm meaning, ask for confirmation, and repair misunderstandings without summarizing the whole conversation. You will practice polite, natural phrasing for conversations with friends, classmates, and colleagues. The focus is on checking comprehension, not on producing a full summary. You will learn how to use 你的意思是…吗?, 我是不是听错了?, 你是说…对吧?, and 我理解得对吗? to keep the conversation accurate and collaborative.

    By the end, you can…

    • paraphrase a speaker's point in Mandarin and ask for confirmation.
    • use 如果我理解得对的话… to check understanding politely.
    • ask 你的意思是…吗? and 你是说…对吧? to confirm details.
    • repair a misunderstanding by saying 我可能理解错了 and asking a follow-up question.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    如果我理解得对的话,你是说……

If I understand correctly, you're saying...

Rúguǒ wǒ lǐjiě de duì de huà, nǐ shì shuō...

Use this to introduce your paraphrase before checking. It softens the check and invites correction.

    你的意思是……吗?

    Do you mean...?

    Nǐ de yìsi shì... ma?

A direct but polite way to confirm a specific point. Fill the blank with your paraphrase.

    你是说……,对吧?

    You're saying..., right?

    Nǐ shì shuō..., duì ba?

Use 对吧? to invite a quick yes/no confirmation. Common in casual and neutral conversations.

    我理解得对吗?

    Did I understand correctly?

    Wǒ lǐjiě de duì ma?

A general check after you paraphrase. It asks about your comprehension, not about the facts themselves.

    我可能理解错了,你能再说一遍吗?

I might have misunderstood; could you say that again?

Wǒ kěnéng lǐjiě cuò le, nǐ néng zài shuō yí biàn ma?

Use when you suspect a misunderstanding. It takes responsibility and asks for repetition.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The core pattern is: 如果我理解得对的话 + paraphrase + 吗/对吧? For example: 如果我理解得对的话,你是说会议改到周三,对吗? (If I understand correctly, you're saying the meeting is moved to Wednesday, right?) You can also use 你的意思是 + paraphrase + 吗?: 你的意思是这个方案需要更多时间,是吗? (Do you mean this plan needs more time, is that right?) Notice that Mandarin often uses 吗 or 对吧/是吗 at the end to turn your paraphrase into a confirmation question. You do not need to change word order; just add the question tag. Keep your paraphrase short: one main point, not a full summary.

    When to use it

Use these checks when the information matters, when you are taking notes, or when the speaker seems to expect agreement. For example, in a class: 如果我理解得对的话,你是说这个作业周五交,对吗? In a workplace chat: 你的意思是客户希望我们改一下设计,是吗? In a casual conversation: 你是说你不喜欢辣的,对吧? If the speaker corrects you, accept it and repeat the corrected point: 哦,我明白了,是周四,不是周三。 Avoid overusing these phrases in every sentence; use them at key points to show you are listening carefully. Also, 如果我理解得对的话 can sound slightly formal but is fine in neutral and polite contexts.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    下周的聚会改到周六了,因为很多人周五没空。

Next week's gathering is moved to Saturday, because many people are not free on Friday.Xià zhōu de jùhuì gǎi dào zhōuliù le, yīnwèi hěn duō rén zhōuwǔ méi kòng.
    B

    如果我理解得对的话,你是说聚会从周五改到周六,对吗?

If I understand correctly, you're saying the gathering is moved from Friday to Saturday, right?Rúguǒ wǒ lǐjiě de duì de huà, nǐ shì shuō jùhuì cóng zhōuwǔ gǎi dào zhōuliù, duì ma?
    A

    对,就是这个意思。周六晚上七点,在老地方。

Yes, that's exactly what I mean. Saturday at 7 p.m., at the usual place.Duì, jiù shì zhège yìsi. Zhōuliù wǎnshang qī diǎn, zài lǎo dìfang.
    B

    我理解得对吗?周六晚上七点,老地方,对吗?

Did I understand correctly? Saturday at 7 p.m., the usual place, right?Wǒ lǐjiě de duì ma? Zhōuliù wǎnshang qī diǎn, lǎo dìfang, duì ma?

A little context goes a long way

In Mandarin conversations, confirming understanding with a paraphrase can show respect and careful listening, especially with teachers, supervisors, or clients. However, in very casual chats with close friends, too many confirmation questions may feel repetitive; a simple 哦,我明白了 (Oh, I see) or 对,我懂了 (Yes, I got it) may be enough. Use 您 (nín) instead of 你 (nǐ) when speaking to someone older or in a formal service context, and keep your tone gentle. If you are unsure, it is usually better to ask a short check than to pretend you understood.

    One thing to watch for

Using 你的意思是我理解得对吗? to ask if you understood correctly.

Try this instead: This asks about the other person's meaning, not your comprehension. To check your own understanding, say 我理解得对吗? For example: 我理解得对吗?你是说周五交作业? (Did I understand correctly? You're saying the homework is due Friday?) If you want to ask about their meaning, use 你的意思是……吗?

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1Paraphrase and confirm: Your friend says 我不太喜欢太甜的菜. Use 如果我理解得对的话…

    Show a sample answer

    如果我理解得对的话,你是说你不喜欢太甜的菜,对吗?

This uses the target pattern to paraphrase and adds 对吗? to confirm. You could also say 你的意思是你不喜欢太甜的菜,是吗? Both are correct; the key is to restate the point and ask for confirmation.

2Choose the better phrase to check your own understanding: 你的意思是……吗? or 我理解得对吗?

    Show a sample answer

    我理解得对吗?

我理解得对吗? asks whether your comprehension is correct. 你的意思是……吗? asks about the other person's meaning, which is also useful but not the same check. Both can appear together: 你的意思是……吗?我理解得对吗?

3Repair a misunderstanding: You thought the meeting was on Wednesday, but it is on Thursday. Write a line to take responsibility and ask for repetition.

    Show a sample answer

    我可能理解错了,你能再说一遍吗?

This phrase takes responsibility and asks the speaker to repeat. You could also say 不好意思,我理解错了,是周四,不是周三,对吗? Both are acceptable; the first is more general, the second confirms the corrected detail.

    Take this with you

To confirm understanding in Mandarin, paraphrase one key point and add a short check: 如果我理解得对的话…对吗? or 你的意思是…吗? Keep it brief, accept corrections, and use 我理解得对吗? to check your own comprehension.
