A warm illustrated language study space

When you talk with someone in Mandarin, you often need to check that you understood their idea correctly. Summarizing a whole argument is different from paraphrasing one point. This lesson teaches you to restate the other person's idea in your own words and ask for confirmation. You will use patterns like 你的意思是…… (wǒ shì bu shì kěyǐ zhèyàng lǐjiě...). These phrases help you avoid misunderstandings and show that you are listening carefully. The focus is on one specific skill: paraphrasing a single idea, not summarizing a long argument.

    By the end, you can…

    • restate a speaker's idea in my own words and ask if I understood correctly.
吗? and 我是不是可以这样理解…… to confirm understanding.
    • respond appropriately when someone paraphrases my idea.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    So you mean...?

    nǐ de yìsi shì... ma?

The most common way to paraphrase and confirm. Put the restated idea between 是 and 吗. Use with friends, classmates, or colleagues.

Can I understand it this way...?

wǒ shì bu shì kěyǐ zhèyàng lǐjiě……

Slightly more formal and tentative. Good for meetings or when you want to be polite. Follow with your paraphrase.

    In other words, ...

    huàn jù huà shuō,……

Use this to introduce your paraphrase. It signals that you are about to restate the idea in a different way.

    Did I understand correctly?

    wǒ lǐjiě de duì ma?

A short check question you can add after your paraphrase. It is neutral and works in most situations.

Yes, that's exactly what I mean.

    duì,jiù shì zhège yìsi。

A typical response when someone paraphrases your idea correctly. You can also say 没错 (méicuò) or 你说得对 (nǐ shuō de duì).

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The core pattern is 你的意思是…… (nǐ de yìsi shì…… ma?). You place your paraphrase after 是 and before 吗. For example, if your friend says 我觉得这个计划太复杂了 (wǒ juéde zhège jìhuà tài fùzá le), you can paraphrase: 你的意思是这个计划需要简化吗? (nǐ de yìsi shì zhège jìhuà xūyào jiǎnhuà ma? — So you mean this plan needs to be simplified?). (wǒ shì bu shì kěyǐ zhèyàng lǐjiě……). (wǒ shì bu shì kěyǐ zhèyàng lǐjiě: nǐ juéde wǒmen yīnggāi xiān zuò diàochá? — Can I understand it this way: you think we should do a survey first?). Notice that both patterns focus on one idea, not a whole argument.

    When to use it

Use these patterns when you want to confirm a single point, especially in conversations where details matter. For example, if a colleague gives you instructions, you can say (nǐ de yìsi shì, wǒ xūyào jīntiān xiàwǔ zhīqián fā yóujiàn, duì ma? — So you mean I need to send the email before this afternoon, right?). In a classroom, after a teacher explains a concept, you might say (wǒ shì bu shì kěyǐ zhèyàng lǐjiě: zhège yǔfǎ diǎn biǎoshì guòqù jīngcháng fāshēng de dòngzuò? — Can I understand it this way: this grammar point expresses actions that often happened in the past?). Avoid using these patterns to summarize a long argument; instead, pick one key idea and paraphrase it.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

I think we should do market research first, then decide whether to launch this product.wǒ juéde wǒmen yīnggāi xiān zuò shìchǎng diàochá,zài juédìng yào bu yào tuīchū zhège chǎnpǐn。
    B

So you mean, before launching the product, we need to understand market demand first, right?nǐ de yìsi shì,zài tuīchū chǎnpǐn zhīqián,wǒmen xūyào xiān liǎojiě shìchǎng xūqiú,duì ma?
    A

Yes, that's exactly what I mean. And the survey results will affect our decision.duì,jiù shì zhège yìsi。érqiě diàochá jiéguǒ huì yǐngxiǎng wǒmen de juédìng。
    B

I see. So can I understand it this way: if the survey results are bad, we won't launch the product?wǒ míngbai le。nà wǒ shì bu shì kěyǐ zhèyàng lǐjiě:rúguǒ diàochá jiéguǒ bù hǎo,wǒmen jiù bù tuīchū chǎnpǐn?

A little context goes a long way

In Mandarin conversations, paraphrasing is often seen as a sign of active listening and respect. 吗? can feel slightly direct in very formal settings; in those contexts, 我是不是可以这样理解…… is more tentative and polite. With close friends, you can simply say 你是说……? (nǐ shì shuō...?) which is shorter and casual. Also, when someone paraphrases your idea, a simple 对 or 没错 is enough; you don't need to repeat the whole paraphrase.

    One thing to watch for

吗? to summarize a long, multi-point argument, which can sound like you are trying to replace the speaker's whole point with a simplified version.

Try this instead: Use it for one idea at a time. For example, if someone gives three reasons, pick one: 你的意思是,价格太高是主要原因吗? (nǐ de yìsi shì, jiàgé tài gāo shì zhǔyào yuányīn ma? — So you mean the high price is the main reason?). Then confirm the next point separately.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

Paraphrase this idea and ask for confirmation using 你的意思是……吗?

    Show a sample answer

This restates the key idea (tones are the hardest part) and adds 对吗 for confirmation. You could also use 你的意思是声调最难吗? which is shorter but still correct.

    Show a sample answer

This uses the tentative pattern to check understanding. It focuses on the single idea of needing more time. Another valid version:

3Someone paraphrases your idea correctly. What can you say to confirm?

    Show a sample answer

This is a natural, neutral response. You can also say 没错 or 你说得对. All are appropriate in most situations.

    Take this with you

To confirm understanding in Mandarin, paraphrase one idea at a time and ask Keep it focused, and respond with 对,就是这个意思 when someone paraphrases you correctly.
