Chinese for Confirmed Arrangements: Using 在 and Time Phrases

Learn to talk about fixed future arrangements in Mandarin using 在 + time, time + 见, and 跟 + person. Practice a short conversation about meeting a friend at six.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A warm illustrated language study space

In English, you can say “I’m meeting Ana at six” to show a fixed arrangement. Mandarin does not use present continuous for this. Instead, it uses time phrases and words like 在 (zài) and 见 (jiàn). This lesson teaches you to state confirmed arrangements clearly. You will learn to say who you are meeting, when, and where. You will also practice a short conversation. The focus is on arrangements that are already set, not just plans you are considering.

    By the end, you can…

    • state a fixed future arrangement with a person and a time.
    • ask someone about their arrangement and reply naturally.
    • use 在 and 见 correctly in a short conversation.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    我六点见安娜。

    I’m meeting Ana at six.

    wǒ liù diǎn jiàn Ānnà

Use time + 见 + person. This is a confirmed arrangement.

    我六点在咖啡馆见安娜。

I’m meeting Ana at the café at six.

wǒ liù diǎn zài kāfēiguǎn jiàn Ānnà

Add 在 + place before 见 to say where.

    我跟安娜六点见。

    I’m meeting Ana at six.

wǒ gēn Ānnà liù diǎn jiàn

Use 跟 + person to mean “with Ana.” The time can come before 见.

    你几点见安娜?

What time are you meeting Ana?

    nǐ jǐ diǎn jiàn Ānnà

Ask about a fixed arrangement. 几点 means “what time.”

    我们六点见。

    We’re meeting at six.

    wǒmen liù diǎn jiàn

A short, natural way to confirm a group arrangement.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

For a fixed arrangement, use: Subject + time + 见 + person. Example: 我六点见安娜。 (I’m meeting Ana at six.) To add a place, put 在 + place before 见: 我六点在咖啡馆见安娜。 (I’m meeting Ana at the café at six.) You can also use 跟 + person: 我跟安娜六点见。 (I’m meeting Ana at six.) The time phrase usually comes before 见. Do not use 正在 (zhèng zài) for future arrangements; 正在 is for actions happening now.

    When to use it

Use these patterns when the arrangement is already confirmed: a time, a person, and often a place are set. For example, 我明天三点见王老师。 (I’m meeting Teacher Wang tomorrow at three.) If you are only thinking about a plan, use 想 (xiǎng) or 要 (yào): 我想见安娜。 (I want to meet Ana.) For a confirmed arrangement, keep it simple: time + 见 + person. In questions, use 几点: 你几点见安娜? (What time are you meeting Ana?) Answer with the same pattern: 我六点见安娜。

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    你今天下午做什么?

What are you doing this afternoon?nǐ jīntiān xiàwǔ zuò shénme
    B

    我六点见安娜。

I’m meeting Ana at six.wǒ liù diǎn jiàn Ānnà
    A

    你们在哪儿见?

Where are you meeting?nǐmen zài nǎr jiàn
    B

    我们在咖啡馆见。

We’re meeting at the café.wǒmen zài kāfēiguǎn jiàn

A little context goes a long way

In Mandarin, stating a fixed arrangement often includes a specific time and place. If you need to change it, say 我们改时间吧。 (Let’s change the time.) It is polite to confirm with 我们六点见。 (See you at six.) Using 见 alone can mean “see you,” so context matters. For a more formal arrangement, you can say 我六点跟安娜见面。 (I’m meeting Ana at six.) 见面 is a common verb for a planned meeting.

    One thing to watch for

Using 正在 for a future arrangement: 我正在六点见安娜。

Try this instead: 正在 means an action is happening now, not a future arrangement. For a fixed future arrangement, say 我六点见安娜。 (I’m meeting Ana at six.) If you want to emphasize the arrangement is set, you can add 已经: 我已经跟安娜约好了,六点见。 (I’ve already arranged with Ana; see you at six.)

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you say “I’m meeting Ana at six” using time + 见 + person?

    Show a sample answer

    我六点见安娜。

This follows the pattern Subject + time + 见 + person. You can also say 我跟安娜六点见, which is equally correct.

2Ask “What time are you meeting Ana?” in Mandarin.

    Show a sample answer

    你几点见安娜?

几点 means “what time.” The question word comes before 见. You can also ask 你什么时候见安娜? (When are you meeting Ana?)

3Add a place to “I’m meeting Ana at six” to say “at the café.”

    Show a sample answer

    我六点在咖啡馆见安娜。

Place phrases with 在 come before 见. 在咖啡馆 means “at the café.” You can also say 我跟安娜六点在咖啡馆见.

    Take this with you

For fixed future arrangements in Mandarin, use time + 见 + person, and add 在 + place before 见 if needed. Avoid 正在 for future plans.
