Chinese for Long-Distance Friends: Schedule a Video Call and Say 'I Miss Hanging Out'

Learn Mandarin phrases to stay in touch with friends far away: suggest a video chat, express missing them, and set a time. Includes pinyin and cultural tips.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Two friends sharing an evening conversation

When a close friend lives in another city or country, you need different language than for local friends. In Mandarin, you can suggest a video call with 我们视频聊天吧 (wǒmen shìpín liáotiān ba) and say you miss hanging out with 我很想念我们一起玩 (wǒ hěn xiǎngniàn wǒmen yìqǐ wán). This lesson teaches you to schedule calls, express missing someone, and handle time differences. You'll practice a short dialogue and learn to avoid common mistakes like using the wrong word for 'miss' or forgetting the polite 吧 particle. By the end, you can confidently make plans with a distant Chinese-speaking friend.

    By the end, you can…

    • suggest a video call with a friend using 我们视频聊天吧。
    • say I miss hanging out with someone using 我很想念我们一起玩。
    • ask about and schedule a call time using 你什么时候方便?

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    我们视频聊天吧。

    Let's video chat.

    wǒmen shìpín liáotiān ba

Use with close friends to suggest a video call. 吧 makes it a friendly suggestion.

    我很想念我们一起玩。

I really miss hanging out together.

wǒ hěn xiǎngniàn wǒmen yìqǐ wán

想念 (xiǎngniàn) means to miss someone or something deeply. 一起玩 means hang out or play together.

    你什么时候方便?

    When are you available?

    nǐ shénme shíhou fāngbiàn

Polite way to ask about someone's availability for a call or meeting.

    我们可以周末打电话。

We can call on the weekend.

    wǒmen kěyǐ zhōumò dǎ diànhuà

Use 可以 to propose a plan. 打电话 means make a phone call; for video, say 视频聊天.

    好久不见,我很想你。

Long time no see, I miss you.

hǎojiǔ bù jiàn, wǒ hěn xiǎng nǐ

A warm greeting for a friend you haven't seen in a while. 想你 is more personal and casual than 想念你.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

To suggest an activity with a friend, use 我们 + verb + 吧. For example, 我们视频聊天吧 (Let's video chat) or 我们打电话吧 (Let's call). To express missing someone, use 我很想念 + person/activity. For instance, 我很想念你 (I miss you) or 我很想念我们一起玩 (I miss hanging out together). To ask about availability, use 你什么时候方便? (When are you available?). You can also specify a time: 你明天方便吗? (Are you available tomorrow?).

    When to use it

Use these phrases when you want to reconnect with a friend who lives far away. 我们视频聊天吧 is casual and friendly, perfect for close friends. If you want to be more polite, say 我们可以视频聊天吗? (Can we video chat?). Use 我很想念我们一起玩 when you feel nostalgic about spending time together. For scheduling, 你什么时候方便? works in both casual and semi-formal situations. If you need to mention a time difference, say 你那边现在几点? (What time is it there now?).

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    嗨!好久不见,我很想你。

I miss you too! Let's video chat.wǒ yě hěn xiǎng nǐ! wǒmen shìpín liáotiān ba
    A

    好啊。你什么时候方便?

Sure. When are you available?hǎo a. nǐ shénme shíhou fāngbiàn
    B

    我周末方便。我们可以星期六晚上视频。

I'm available on the weekend. We can video chat on Saturday evening.wǒ zhōumò fāngbiàn. wǒmen kěyǐ xīngqīliù wǎnshang shìpín liáotiān

A little context goes a long way

In Chinese culture, maintaining long-distance friendships often involves regular check-ins via messaging apps like WeChat. Sending a quick 在吗? (Are you there?) before a call is common, but for close friends, directly suggesting a video chat is fine. Be mindful of time zones; asking 你那边现在几点? shows consideration. Unlike some Western cultures where scheduling calls far in advance is normal, Chinese friends may decide spontaneously, so flexibility is appreciated.

    One thing to watch for

Using 我想你 to mean 'I miss hanging out' when you actually miss the activity, not the person.

Try this instead: Use 我很想念我们一起玩 for missing the activity. 我想你 specifically means 'I miss you' (the person). For example, if you miss playing games together, say 我很想念我们一起玩游戏。

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you suggest a video chat to a friend in Chinese?

    Show a sample answer

    我们视频聊天吧。

This uses the pattern 我们 + activity + 吧 to make a friendly suggestion. You could also say 我们可以视频聊天吗? for a more polite question.

2Translate: 'I miss hanging out together.'

    Show a sample answer

    我很想念我们一起玩。

想念 expresses missing something deeply, and 一起玩 means hang out. You can replace 玩 with other activities, like 聊天 (chat).

3Ask a friend when they are available for a call.

    Show a sample answer

    你什么时候方便打电话?

This combines 你什么时候方便? with 打电话. You can also ask 你什么时候方便视频? for video chat.

    Take this with you

Use 我们...吧 to suggest a call, 想念 to express missing someone or something, and 你什么时候方便? to schedule. Keep time differences in mind and be flexible.
