Joining a Group Conversation in Mandarin: 'Mind if I join?' and 'What are you talking about?'
Learn elementary Mandarin phrases to enter an ongoing group chat, ask what people are discussing, and contribute politely. Includes pinyin, dialogue, and cultural tips for managing multiple speakers.

Joining a conversation with several people is different from one-on-one talk. You need to get attention without interrupting, ask what the topic is, and then add your own comment. In Mandarin, this often involves phrases like 我可以加入吗?(Wǒ kěyǐ jiārù ma?) and 你们在聊什么?(Nǐmen zài liáo shénme?). This lesson teaches you exactly how to enter a group conversation politely, listen for the topic, and contribute a simple opinion. You will practice with a four-line dialogue and learn patterns for asking and joining. The focus is on spoken, everyday Mandarin used among friends or classmates.
By the end, you can…
- politely ask to join an ongoing group conversation in Mandarin.
- ask what a group is talking about and understand a simple answer.
- contribute one short comment or question to the group.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

我可以加入吗?
May I join?
Wǒ kěyǐ jiārù ma?
Polite and neutral. Use when you approach a group already talking. 我 (I) + 可以 (can/may) + 加入 (join) + 吗 (question particle).
你们在聊什么?
What are you (plural) talking about?
Nǐmen zài liáo shénme?
Use 你们 (you plural) for a group. 在聊 means 'are chatting about'. This is casual and friendly.
我也想知道。
I want to know too.
Wǒ yě xiǎng zhīdào.
A soft way to show interest after someone says the topic. 也 (also) + 想 (want) + 知道 (know).
我觉得……
I think...
Wǒ juéde...
Use this to start your own opinion. It works in many group settings. Follow with a simple comment, e.g., 我觉得很好 (I think it's good).
你们呢?
What about you (plural)?
Nǐmen ne?
After you speak, turn the question back to the group. 呢 makes a short 'what about...?' question.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

Useful pattern
To join a group, use 我可以加入吗?(Wǒ kěyǐ jiārù ma?) or the shorter 我加入,好吗?(Wǒ jiārù, hǎo ma? 'I join, okay?'). To ask the topic, say 你们在聊什么?(Nǐmen zài liáo shénme?). Notice 你们 (nǐmen) is the plural 'you'. In Mandarin, adding 们 (men) makes a pronoun plural, like 我们 (wǒmen 'we') and 他们 (tāmen 'they'). The verb 聊 (liáo) means 'to chat'. You can also say 你们在说什么?(Nǐmen zài shuō shénme? 'What are you saying?'), but 聊 is more casual for friendly talk. To contribute, start with 我觉得…… (Wǒ juéde... 'I think...') and then give a short opinion. For example: 我觉得这个电影很好看。(Wǒ juéde zhège diànyǐng hěn hǎokàn. 'I think this movie is very good.')
When to use it
Use these phrases when you see two or more people already talking and you want to join without being rude. First, wait for a short pause, then say 我可以加入吗?(Wǒ kěyǐ jiārù ma?). If they say 可以 (kěyǐ 'sure') or 当然 (dāngrán 'of course'), you can ask 你们在聊什么?(Nǐmen zài liáo shénme?). If the topic is clear, you can skip that and go straight to 我也想知道。 (Wǒ yě xiǎng zhīdào. 'I want to know too.') or 我觉得…… (Wǒ juéde... 'I think...'). When you finish your comment, say 你们呢?(Nǐmen ne? 'What about you?') to keep the group talking. Avoid saying 我可以加入吗? to a teacher or a boss in a very formal meeting; instead, wait to be invited. Among friends, it is perfectly fine.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
你们在聊什么?我可以加入吗?
What are you talking about? May I join?Nǐmen zài liáo shénme? Wǒ kěyǐ jiārù ma?我们在聊周末去哪里玩。当然可以,欢迎!
We're talking about where to go this weekend. Of course, welcome!Wǒmen zài liáo zhōumò qù nǎlǐ wán. Dāngrán kěyǐ, huānyíng!我也想知道。我觉得去公园很好。你们呢?
I want to know too. I think going to the park is good. What about you?Wǒ yě xiǎng zhīdào. Wǒ juéde qù gōngyuán hěn hǎo. Nǐmen ne?我也觉得不错。我们可以带一些吃的。
I think it's good too. We can bring some food.Wǒ yě juéde búcuò. Wǒmen kěyǐ dài yìxiē chī de.A little context goes a long way
In Mandarin-speaking contexts, joining a group conversation often starts with a brief pause and a soft question. 我可以加入吗? is polite but can sound slightly formal among close friends; a simple 你们在聊什么? with a smile is often enough. Using 你们 (nǐmen) correctly shows you are addressing the group, not one person. When you give an opinion, starting with 我觉得…… softens your statement and leaves room for others. Directly saying 你错了 (nǐ cuò le 'you are wrong') can feel blunt; instead, say 我觉得可能不一样 (Wǒ juéde kěnéng bù yíyàng 'I think it might be different').
One thing to watch for
Using 你可以加入吗? (Nǐ kěyǐ jiārù ma?) to ask if you can join, which means 'Can you join?' and addresses one person.
Try this instead: Say 我可以加入吗? (Wǒ kěyǐ jiārù ma? 'May I join?'). Use 我 (I) as the subject. For a group, address them with 你们 (nǐmen): 你们在聊什么? (Nǐmen zài liáo shénme? 'What are you talking about?').
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1You see three classmates talking and laughing. You want to join. What do you say first?

我可以加入吗?
This politely asks permission to join. You could also say 你们在聊什么? first if you want to know the topic. Both are acceptable; 我可以加入吗? is more direct about joining.
2Your friend says 我们在聊明天的考试。 How do you show interest and ask to know more?

我也想知道。
This means 'I want to know too' and fits after hearing the topic. You could also ask 难吗? (Nán ma? 'Is it hard?') or 你们觉得怎么样? (Nǐmen juéde zěnmeyàng? 'What do you think?').
3You want to give your opinion in the group. What phrase do you start with?
Show a sample answer
我觉得……
This means 'I think...' and is a safe way to introduce your view. For example, 我觉得很好 (Wǒ juéde hěn hǎo 'I think it's good'). Other options include 我认为…… (Wǒ rènwéi...), which is slightly more formal.
To join a group conversation in Mandarin, pause, then ask 我可以加入吗? or 你们在聊什么?. Contribute with 我觉得…… and keep others involved with 你们呢?.
