Mandarin Chinese: Finding the Main Point in News by Skimming
Learn to skim Mandarin news articles and broadcasts for the main point: spot topic words, the opening summary sentence, and the reporter's source, using simplified characters and pinyin.

News in Mandarin often states the main point early, then adds details. To find that main point quickly, you do not need every word. First, look at the headline (标题, biāotí) and the first sentence, which often answers who did what. Next, scan for repeated topic words, such as 中国 (Zhōngguó, China) or 经济 (jīngjì, economy). In a broadcast, listen for the first ten seconds and for phrases like 据报道 (jù bàodào, according to reports). This lesson teaches you to skim for these signals, not to analyze every sentence. You will practice recognizing the main point in both written and spoken news, using simple questions: What is the topic? Who is involved? What happened?
By the end, you can…
- identify the main point of a short Mandarin news article by reading the headline and first sentence.
- skim a Mandarin news broadcast for key words and the reporter's source phrase.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

标题
headline; title
biāotí (byao-tee, first tone, second tone)
The first thing to read; it usually names the topic and often the main action.
据报道
according to reports
jù bàodào (jyoo bao-dao, fourth tone, fourth tone)
A common broadcast phrase that signals the source and often introduces the main point.
主要意思
main point; main idea
zhǔyào yìsi (joo-yao ee-suh, third tone, fourth tone, neutral tone)
Use this when asking or stating what the news is mainly about.
谁做了什么
who did what
shéi zuò le shénme (shay dzwaw luh shun-muh, second tone, fourth tone, neutral, second tone)
A simple question to find the main point quickly in a news sentence.
第一句话
the first sentence
dì yī jù huà (dee ee jyoo hwah, fourth tone, first tone, fourth tone, fourth tone)
In many Mandarin news items, the first sentence gives the main point.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

Useful pattern
A common news pattern is: source + topic + action. For example, 据报道,中国经济增长 (Jù bàodào, Zhōngguó jīngjì zēngzhǎng) means 'According to reports, China's economy grew.' The topic is 中国 (China), the action is 经济增长 (economy grew), and 据报道 marks the source. When you skim, look for this order. Another example: 标题说,北京下雨 (Biāotí shuō, Běijīng xià yǔ) — 'The headline says Beijing is raining.' Here 标题说 introduces what the headline claims. You do not need to understand every adjective or number; focus on the topic word and the verb.
When to use it
Use this skimming pattern when you have limited time or when a news item is long. For a written article, read the 标题 (headline) and 第一句话 (first sentence) first. For a broadcast, listen for 据报道 (according to reports) or 消息说 (xiāoxi shuō, 'news says') in the first few seconds. For example, if you hear 据报道,上海有新的地铁线 (Jù bàodào, Shànghǎi yǒu xīn de dìtiě xiàn), you can quickly note: topic 上海 (Shanghai), action 有新的地铁线 (has a new subway line). This is enough for the main point; details like the line number can wait.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

In mainland Mandarin news, the main point often appears at the beginning, but in some feature stories or opinion pieces it may come later. Broadcast news may use 据报道 or 消息说 to show the source; this is a formal register, not casual conversation. When reading headlines, remember that Mandarin headlines often omit 是 and sometimes omit subjects, so rely on context and topic words.
One thing to watch for
Reading every word of a long news article from beginning to end to find the main point.
Try this instead: Skim first: read the 标题 (headline) and 第一句话 (first sentence). For example, in 据报道,中国经济增长很快, the main point is already clear: China's economy is growing quickly. Details can be read later if needed.
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1In the sentence 据报道,北京下雨, what is the main topic?
Show a sample answer
北京 (Běijīng, Beijing)
北京 is the topic word, and 下雨 (xià yǔ, raining) is the action. 据报道 only marks the source, so it is not the main topic. Other answers may mention the action, but the topic is Beijing.
2Which phrase often signals the source in a Mandarin news broadcast?
Show a sample answer
据报道 (jù bàodào)
据报道 means 'according to reports' and commonly introduces the source. 消息说 (xiāoxi shuō) is also possible, so accept that as a valid alternative.
3What should you read first to find the main point of a Mandarin news article?
Show a sample answer
The 标题 (headline) and the 第一句话 (first sentence).
The headline and first sentence usually give the topic and main action. Reading the whole article first is not necessary for finding the main point, though it may help with details.
Skim Mandarin news by reading the headline and first sentence, and listen for 据报道 or 消息说 in broadcasts. Focus on the topic word and the action, not every detail.
