Reading Baozi Labels in Chinese: Asking What Filling Is Inside
Learn to read breakfast-shop labels and ask 这是什么馅的? so you can tell meat, vegetable and red bean baozi apart before you buy.

At a Chinese breakfast shop, baozi usually sit in a steamer behind a small paper label, and the label is often the only clue to what is inside. This lesson teaches you four core words — 包子, 肉馅, 菜馅 and 豆沙 — plus the question 这是什么馅的? (What filling is this?). You will practise reading the label first, then confirming with staff if the label is unclear. The register is casual and spoken, the kind of exchange you have while pointing at a steamer at 7 a.m. Everything here is about identifying filling, not ordering drinks or paying, so you can use it the same morning you learn it.
By the end, you can…
- read common baozi filling words on a steamer label
- ask 这是什么馅的? to confirm a filling before buying
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.
Checking available voices…
包子
baozi; a steamed filled bun
bāo zi (bāo first tone, zi neutral)
The general word. Say it when you point at the steamer and want one bun.
肉馅
meat filling
ròu xiàn (ròu fourth tone, xiàn fourth tone)
On a label it means the bun contains minced meat, usually pork. 肉 alone on a label also signals meat.
菜馅
vegetable filling
cài xiàn (cài fourth tone, xiàn fourth tone)
A vegetable bun. Shops may also write 素馅 for a vegetarian filling, so treat 菜馅 as the everyday label word.
豆沙
red bean paste
dòu shā (dòu fourth tone, shā first tone)
A sweet filling. On a label it often appears as 豆沙包, meaning a red-bean-paste bun.
这是什么馅的?
What filling is this?
zhè shì shén me xiàn de? (zhè fourth tone, shì fourth tone, shén second tone, me neutral, xiàn fourth tone, de neutral)
Point at the bun or label as you say it. The 的 at the end is normal in this spoken question.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.
Make it make sense
Useful pattern
The key pattern is 这是什么馅的? — 这 (this) + 是 (is) + 什么馅 (what filling) + 的. You can swap 这 for 那个 (that one) when the bun is farther away: 那个是什么馅的? You can also name the item first: 这个包子是什么馅的? All three ask the same thing, and staff will answer with a short filling word such as 肉馅 or 豆沙. If you already read the label and just want confirmation, point and ask 这是肉馅的吗? (Is this meat filling?), which invites a simple 是 or 不是.
When to use it
Read the label before you ask. Labels are usually short: 肉包, 菜包, 豆沙包. If the label is missing, turned away, or you cannot read it, then ask 这是什么馅的? Pointing makes the question unambiguous, and staff often answer by tapping the right steamer. If you hear a filling word you do not know, repeat it back as a question: 菜馅? The staff will confirm or correct you. Keep the exchange short; other customers are usually waiting behind you.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
你好,这个包子是什么馅的?
Hello, what filling is this baozi?nǐ hǎo, zhè ge bāo zi shì shén me xiàn de? (nǐ third tone, hǎo third tone, zhè fourth tone, ge neutral, bāo first tone, zi neutral, shì fourth tone, shén second tone, me neutral, xiàn fourth tone, de neutral)这个是肉馅的。
This one is meat filling.zhè ge shì ròu xiàn de. (zhè fourth tone, ge neutral, shì fourth tone, ròu fourth tone, xiàn fourth tone, de neutral)那个呢?是菜馅的吗?
What about that one? Is it vegetable filling?nà ge ne? shì cài xiàn de ma? (nà fourth tone, ge neutral, ne neutral, shì fourth tone, cài fourth tone, xiàn fourth tone, de neutral, ma neutral)不是,那个是豆沙的,甜的。
No, that one is red bean paste, sweet.bú shì, nà ge shì dòu shā de, tián de. (bú second tone before shì, nà fourth tone, ge neutral, shì fourth tone, dòu fourth tone, shā first tone, de neutral, tián second tone, de neutral)A little context goes a long way
Baozi labels are written for speed, so they are often two or three characters: 肉包, 菜包, 豆沙包. Reading the label first is polite and efficient, and asking 这是什么馅的? is completely normal at a busy breakfast counter. Staff may answer with just one word, which is friendly, not rude. If a shop writes 素馅 instead of 菜馅, it means a vegetarian filling; the exact ingredients vary by shop, so ask if it matters to you.
One thing to watch for
Asking 包子是什么? when you want to know the filling.
Try this instead: 包子是什么 asks what a baozi is in general. To ask about the filling of the bun in front of you, say 这是什么馅的? or 这个包子是什么馅的? The word 馅 is the part that means filling, so it must be in the question.
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1You see a label that says 豆沙包. What is inside?
Show a sample answer
Red bean paste.
豆沙 means red bean paste, and 包 here is short for 包子. A label reading 豆沙 alone would also point to the same sweet filling.
2How do you ask a staff member what filling the bun in your hand has?
Show a sample answer
这是什么馅的?
This is the standard spoken question. 这个包子是什么馅的? is equally correct and slightly more explicit.
3A label says 菜包. You want a meat bun. What do you say to check the other steamer?
Show a sample answer
那个是肉馅的吗?
This asks whether that one is meat filling and invites a yes-or-no answer. 那个是肉包吗? also works, since 肉包 is the common label form.
Read the label first, then point and ask 这是什么馅的? to confirm. Learn 肉馅, 菜馅 and 豆沙, and you can identify most breakfast baozi before you buy.
