Answering Questions After a Talk in Mandarin Chinese

Learn to handle Q&A sessions in Mandarin Chinese with confidence. This lesson teaches phrases for acknowledging questions, giving opinions, and managing time, with a focus on the differences from prepared presentations.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A warm illustrated language study space

After giving a talk, the Q&A session can be the most challenging part, especially in a foreign language. Unlike a prepared presentation, you must listen carefully, think on your feet, and respond politely. In Mandarin Chinese, there are specific phrases and strategies to make this smoother. This lesson will equip you with the language to acknowledge questions, express opinions, and handle difficult situations gracefully. You'll learn to say things like 'That's a good question' and 'I think...', and to buy time when needed. We'll focus on intermediate-level structures and vocabulary that are immediately useful. By the end, you'll be able to navigate a Q&A session with more confidence and cultural appropriateness.

    By the end, you can…

    • acknowledge a question politely and buy time to think in Mandarin.
    • express my opinion and give a brief answer using appropriate phrases.
    • ask for clarification or repeat a question if I didn't understand.
    • politely decline to answer or defer a question to later.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    That's a good question.

    Zhège wèntí wèn de hǎo.

Use this to acknowledge the questioner and show appreciation. It's polite and buys you a moment to think.

    I think...

    Wǒ rènwéi...

A formal way to express your opinion. Suitable for professional or academic settings.

    Let me think.

    Ràng wǒ xiǎngxiang.

Use this to buy time when you need to formulate your answer. It's polite and natural.

    Could you say that again?

Nín néng zài shuō yí biàn ma?

Use this when you didn't hear or understand the question. 'Nín' is the polite form of 'you'.

I can't answer this question right now; we can discuss it after the session.

Zhège wèntí wǒ zànshí wúfǎ huídá, wǒmen kěyǐ huì hòu tǎolùn.

A polite way to defer a question if you don't know the answer or it's too complex.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

A common pattern for answering questions is: '这个问题问得好。 (That's a good question. I think...). This softens the response and gives you time. (That's a good question. I think this plan is feasible.) You can also use '我觉得' (wǒ juéde) instead of '我认为' in less formal contexts. To buy more time, add '让我想想' (Let me think) before answering. Another useful pattern is to repeat the question: '您问的是... (Are you asking about...?) to confirm understanding.

    When to use it

Use these phrases during the Q&A session after your talk. When someone asks a question, start with '这个问题问得好' to show respect. If you need to think, say '让我想想' or '这是一个很好的问题,让我整理一下思路' (That's a good question, let me organize my thoughts). If you don't understand, politely ask '您能再说一遍吗?' or '您能解释一下吗?' (Could you explain?). If the question is off-topic or you don't know, defer it: '这个问题我们可以在会后讨论' (We can discuss this after the session). (I don't know) directly; instead, use softer phrases like '我暂时没有答案' (I don't have an answer right now).

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

Thank you for your talk. I have a question: do you think this technology will become widespread in the next five years?Xièxie nín de yǎnjiǎng. Wǒ yǒu yí gè wèntí: nín rènwéi zhège jìshù zài wèilái wǔ nián nèi huì pǔjí ma?
    B

That's a good question. I think it will gradually become widespread, but the exact timing depends on cost and policy.Zhège wèntí wèn de hǎo. Wǒ rènwéi tā huì zhújiàn pǔjí, dàn jùtǐ shíjiān qǔjué yú chéngběn hé zhèngcè.
    A

Then, can you predict the approximate time?Nàme, nín néng yùcè yíxià dàgài de shíjiān ma?
    B

Let me think. Maybe three to five years, but we need more data. We can discuss this in detail after the session.Ràng wǒ xiǎngxiang. Kěnéng sān dào wǔ nián ba, dàn wǒmen xūyào gèng duō shùjù. Zhège wèntí wǒmen kěyǐ huì hòu xiángxì tǎolùn.

A little context goes a long way

In Chinese Q&A sessions, it's common to show humility and respect. Using '您' (polite 'you') and acknowledging the question with '问得好' is appreciated. (I understand your point, but...). Also, Chinese audiences may ask multiple questions at once; address them one by one. It's acceptable to defer questions if you don't know, but do so politely. Building consensus and avoiding confrontation are valued.

    One thing to watch for

(I don't know) directly when you don't have an answer.

Try this instead: Soften it with '这个问题我暂时无法回答' (I can't answer this question right now) or '我暂时没有答案,我们可以会后讨论' (I don't have an answer right now; we can discuss after). This maintains politeness and saves face.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How would you politely acknowledge a question and buy time to think?

    Show a sample answer

This combination acknowledges the question and gives you time. You could also say '

2What phrase would you use if you didn't understand the question?

    Show a sample answer

This politely asks the questioner to repeat. Alternatively, '您能解释一下吗?' if you need clarification.

3How would you defer a question you can't answer?

    Show a sample answer

This defers the question politely. You could also say '

    Take this with you

In Mandarin Q&A, start with '这个问题问得好' to show respect, use '让我想想' to buy time, and defer politely if needed. Practice these phrases to sound confident and culturally appropriate.
