Mandarin Chinese: Changing the Topic Politely with 对了 and 话说回来
Learn to shift conversation topics in Mandarin using 对了, 话说回来, and 说到这个. Handle awkward moments politely with 换个话题吧 and 先不说这个了.

In any conversation, you sometimes need to change the subject. Maybe you want to share a new thought, or maybe the current topic is making someone uncomfortable. Mandarin has specific phrases for both situations. This lesson teaches you how to introduce a new topic naturally with 对了 (duì le) and 话说回来 (huà shuō huílái), and how to gently steer away from discomfort with 换个话题吧 (huàn ge huàtí ba) and 先不说这个了 (xiān bù shuō zhège le). You will learn when each phrase is appropriate and how they differ from simply saying 'anyway' in English.
By the end, you can…
- use 对了 to introduce a new topic that just came to mind.
- use 话说回来 to return to a previous point or shift the conversation.
- politely change the topic when I sense discomfort using 换个话题吧 or 先不说这个了.
- distinguish between a neutral topic shift and a topic shift that addresses awkwardness.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

对了
Oh, by the way / That reminds me
duì le
Used to introduce a new topic that suddenly comes to mind. It signals a light, spontaneous shift, not a serious one.
Anyway / Coming back to what we were saying
huà shuō huílái
Used to return to a previous topic or to shift the conversation after a digression. Slightly more formal than 对了.
Speaking of which
shuō dào zhège
Connects the current topic to a related one. It feels natural and keeps the flow of conversation.
Let's change the topic
huàn ge huàtí ba
Directly suggests changing the subject. Use when the current topic is uncomfortable or unproductive. The particle 吧 softens the suggestion.
Let's not talk about this for now
xiān bù shuō zhège le
Politely postpones a topic without rejecting it forever. Useful when someone seems upset or when the timing is wrong.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.
Make it make sense
Useful pattern
To change the topic neutrally, use 对了 + new topic. (duì le, nǐ zhōumò yǒu shénme jìhuà? 'Oh, by the way, what plans do you have this weekend?'). To return to an earlier point, use 话说回来 + point. (huà shuō huílái, wǒmen háishì děi juédìng qù nǎlǐ chīfàn. 'Anyway, we still need to decide where to eat.'). To address discomfort, use 换个话题吧 or 先不说这个了. 'Let's not talk about this for now, okay?'). Notice that 吧 and 好吗 soften the request.
When to use it
Use 对了 when you suddenly remember something or want to add a light, new topic. It is common in casual conversation. Use 话说回来 when you want to bring the conversation back to an earlier subject after a detour, or to shift to a related matter. Use 说到这个 when the current topic naturally leads to another. For discomfort, 换个话题吧 is direct but polite; it works when you sense the other person is uneasy. 先不说这个了 is gentler and postpones the topic. For example, if someone asks about a recent breakup, you might say: 先不说这个了,我们聊点别的吧。 (xiān bù shuō zhège le, wǒmen liáo diǎn bié de ba. 'Let's not talk about this for now; let's talk about something else.'). Avoid using 换个话题吧 in formal situations; it can sound abrupt.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
Oh, by the way, do you have any plans for the weekend?duì le, nǐ zhōumò yǒu shénme jìhuà ma?
I haven't decided yet. Anyway, that exhibition you mentioned last time—did you end up going?hái méi xiǎnghǎo. huà shuō huílái, nǐ shàng cì shuō de nàge zhǎnlǎn, hòulái qù le ma?
I went; it was quite interesting. But let's not talk about this for now—you look a bit tired. Do you want to take a break?qù le, tǐng yǒu yìsi de. bùguò, xiān bù shuō zhège le, nǐ kàn qǐlái yǒudiǎn lèi, yào bu yào xiūxi yīxià?
Sure, thanks. Let's change the topic—any good movies lately?hǎo a, xièxie. huàn ge huàtí ba, zuìjìn yǒu shénme hǎokàn de diànyǐng ma?A little context goes a long way
In Mandarin conversation, directly changing the topic can seem abrupt. Phrases like 对了 and 话说回来 act as softeners, making the shift feel natural. When addressing discomfort, 先不说这个了 is often preferred over 换个话题吧 because it postpones rather than rejects the topic. Using 吧 or 好吗 at the end of a suggestion adds politeness. In more formal settings, you might say (wǒmen huàn ge huàtí, hǎo ma? 'Let's change the topic, shall we?').
One thing to watch for
Using 换个话题吧 in a formal or professional setting without softening it.
Try this instead: In formal contexts, add 好吗 or use a more indirect phrase like 我们聊点别的吧 (wǒmen liáo diǎn bié de ba 'let's talk about something else'). For example, instead of saying 换个话题吧 to a superior, say 我们换个话题,好吗? (wǒmen huàn ge huàtí, hǎo ma? 'Let's change the topic, shall we?').
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1How would you introduce a new topic that just came to mind?
Show a sample answer
对了 is the most natural way to introduce a sudden thought. Other phrases like 说到这个 could also work if the new topic is related to the current one.
2What phrase would you use to return to a previous topic after a digression?

话说回来 explicitly signals a return to an earlier point. 对了 would not work here because it introduces a new topic, not a return.
3How can you politely change the topic when you sense someone is uncomfortable?
Show a sample answer
先不说这个了 postpones the topic gently, and 聊点别的吧 suggests a new direction. 换个话题吧 is also possible but can be more direct.
Use 对了 for spontaneous new topics, 话说回来 to return to a point, and 先不说这个了 or 换个话题吧 to ease discomfort. Always consider the setting and add 吧 or 好吗 for politeness.
