Making Polite Complaints in Mandarin Chinese

In this lesson, you will learn how to make a complaint politely in Mandarin Chinese. Complaining can be tricky in any language, but in Chinese, it's important to use softeners and indirect language to maintain politeness. We'll focus on the phrase '我对服务不满意' (I'm not satisfied with the service) and other useful expressions for expressing dissatisfaction and requesting a solution. You'll practice through a dialogue and exercises, and learn cultural nuances to avoid sounding rude.
By the end, you can…
- politely express dissatisfaction with a service using '我对...不满意'.
- ask for a resolution or compensation in a polite manner.
- understand and respond to a complaint as a service provider.

Wǒ duì fúwù bù mǎnyì.

Could you help me take care of this?

Useful pattern
The pattern '我对...不满意' (Wǒ duì... bù mǎnyì) means 'I am not satisfied with...'. You can insert a noun or noun phrase after '对'. For example, '我对这个结果不满意' (I'm not satisfied with this result). To make it more polite, you can add '有点' (a little) before '不满意': '我对服务有点不满意' (I'm a little unsatisfied with the service). Another useful pattern is '能不能...?' (Can you...?) for polite requests: '能不能帮我换一个?' (Can you help me change it?).
When to use it
Use these phrases when you need to complain about a service, product, or experience in a restaurant, hotel, or store. It's best to start with a soft opener like '不好意思' (Excuse me) or '打扰一下' (Sorry to bother you). Then state the issue calmly. For example, '不好意思,我对服务有点不满意。' After explaining, suggest a solution: '可以帮我处理一下吗?' If the staff responds well, thank them. Avoid raising your voice or using strong words like '太差了' (too bad), as it may cause loss of face and hinder resolution.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
你好,我对这里的服务有点不满意。
Hello, I'm a little unsatisfied with the service here.Nǐ hǎo, wǒ duì zhèlǐ de fúwù yǒudiǎn bù mǎnyì.非常抱歉,请问有什么问题?
I'm very sorry, may I ask what the problem is?Fēicháng bàoqiàn, qǐngwèn yǒu shénme wèntí?我等了半个小时,菜还没上。可以帮我催一下吗?
I've waited for half an hour and the dish hasn't come yet. Could you help me hurry it up?Wǒ děng le bàn gè xiǎoshí, cài hái méi shàng. Kěyǐ bāng wǒ cuī yīxià ma?好的,我马上帮您催。再次抱歉。
Okay, I'll hurry it up for you right away. Sorry again.Hǎo de, wǒ mǎshàng bāng nín cuī. Zàicì bàoqiàn.A little context goes a long way
In Chinese culture, maintaining harmony and 'face' (mianzi) is important. Complaining directly can be seen as confrontational. Using softeners like '有点' (a little) and '一下' (a bit) helps soften the complaint. Also, addressing service staff with '您' (you, polite) shows respect. It's common to start with an apology for bothering them, such as '不好意思' or '打扰一下'. This approach makes it more likely to get a positive resolution.
One thing to watch for
Using '我不满意服务' without '对'.
Try this instead: The standard structure is '我对服务不满意'. The preposition '对' introduces the target of dissatisfaction. Without it, '我不满意服务' sounds incomplete. Note that '我不满意这个服务' is also acceptable, since '满意' can take a direct object; the '对' pattern is simply the more common and slightly more formal choice.
