To make it stronger, use 太 + adjective + 了: 你说得太好了 (nǐ shuō de tài hǎo le). For appearance or possessions, use 真 or 很 before an adjective: 真好看 (zhēn hǎokàn, 'really nice-looking'), 很酷 (hěn kù, 'very cool'). Adding a specific noun, such as 外套 (wàitào, jacket) or 中文 (Zhōngwén, Chinese), makes the compliment sincere and specific.
When to use it
Use these phrases with friends, classmates, and people you know well. 真 and 太…了 sound warm and enthusiastic; 很 is a little calmer. If you are complimenting someone older or in a formal setting, keep it simple and respectful: 您这件衣服很好看 (nín zhè jiàn yīfu hěn hǎokàn, 'your clothes look nice'). Avoid complimenting a stranger's body or appearance directly; focus on clothes, skills, or effort instead. When someone compliments you, a simple 谢谢 (xièxie) or 谢谢，我很开心 (xièxie, wǒ hěn kāixīn, 'thank you, I'm happy') is natural and polite.

In many Chinese-speaking settings, a compliment is often followed by a modest reply, but a simple 谢谢 is now common and friendly. Denying a compliment too strongly, such as 不好不好 (bù hǎo bù hǎo, 'no, it's not good'), can sound like you are rejecting the other person's kindness. Accepting with 谢谢 and a short reason, like where you bought something, keeps the conversation warm and natural.
One thing to watch for
Replying to a compliment with 哪里哪里 (nǎli nǎli) in every situation.
Try this instead: 哪里哪里 is traditional and can sound old-fashioned or overly modest to many younger speakers. A simple 谢谢 (xièxie) is usually better. For example, if a friend says 你的中文说得真棒！, reply 谢谢，我还在学 (xièxie, wǒ hái zài xué, 'thank you, I'm still learning'). This accepts the compliment and adds a friendly, modest detail.
