Mandarin Chinese Time Markers for the Future: 明天, 下个星期, 马上

Learn to talk about the future in Mandarin using time words like 明天 (tomorrow), 下个星期 (next week), and 马上 (soon), with elementary sentence patterns and examples.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A warm illustrated language study space

In Mandarin Chinese, you often don't need to change the verb to talk about the future. Instead, you can simply add a time word that points to a future moment. This lesson focuses on three common time markers: 明天 (míngtiān, tomorrow), 下个星期 (xià ge xīngqī, next week), and 马上 (mǎshàng, soon/immediately). You will learn where to place them in a sentence and how to use them in everyday conversation. By the end, you will be able to say things like 'I'll see you next week' and 'I'm leaving soon' naturally in Mandarin.

    By the end, you can…

    • use 明天, 下个星期, and 马上 in simple future sentences.
    • ask and answer questions about future plans using these time markers.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    明天见。

    See you tomorrow.

    míngtiān jiàn

A common farewell when you expect to meet the next day. 见 (jiàn) means 'to see/meet'.

    下个星期见。

    See you next week.

    xià ge xīngqī jiàn

Use when you plan to meet the following week. 下个 (xià ge) means 'next' for time units.

    我马上来。

I'm coming soon / right away.

    wǒ mǎshàng lái

Said when you will arrive very soon, often within minutes. 马上 (mǎshàng) means 'immediately, soon'.

    明天你有空吗?

    Are you free tomorrow?

    míngtiān nǐ yǒu kòng ma?

A polite way to ask about someone's availability tomorrow. 有空 (yǒu kòng) means 'to be free/have time'.

    我们下个星期去北京。

We are going to Beijing next week.

wǒmen xià ge xīngqī qù Běijīng

The time marker 下个星期 comes before the verb phrase 去北京 (qù Běijīng).

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

In Mandarin, future time is usually shown by placing a time word before the verb. The verb itself does not change. For example: 我明天去学校。 (wǒ míngtiān qù xuéxiào) 'I am going to school tomorrow.' Here 明天 (tomorrow) comes before 去 (go). Similarly, 他下个星期来。 (tā xià ge xīngqī lái) 'He is coming next week.' 马上 (soon) also goes before the verb: 她马上走。 (tā mǎshàng zǒu) 'She is leaving soon.' You can also use these time words in questions: 你明天忙吗? (nǐ míngtiān máng ma?) 'Are you busy tomorrow?'

    When to use it

Use 明天 when talking about the day after today. Use 下个星期 for the week after the current one. Use 马上 when something will happen very soon, often within seconds or minutes. For example, if a friend asks you to hurry, you can say 马上来! (mǎshàng lái!) 'Coming right away!' If you want to make plans for next week, say 下个星期我们看电影吧。 (xià ge xīngqī wǒmen kàn diànyǐng ba) 'Let's watch a movie next week.' Note that 马上 is not used for distant future; it implies immediacy.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    明天你有空吗?

Are you free tomorrow?míngtiān nǐ yǒu kòng ma?
    B

    明天不行,下个星期可以吗?

Tomorrow won't work. How about next week?míngtiān bù xíng, xià ge xīngqī kěyǐ ma?
    A

    可以。下个星期见。

Sure. See you next week.kěyǐ. xià ge xīngqī jiàn.
    B

    好,我马上给你发消息。

Okay, I'll message you soon.hǎo, wǒ mǎshàng gěi nǐ fā xiāoxi.

A little context goes a long way

In Chinese, time markers like 明天 and 下个星期 are often used without a future tense verb. The context makes the future meaning clear. Also, 马上 can sound abrupt if used to answer a request for a favor; adding 一下 (yīxià) softens it: 我马上去一下。 (wǒ mǎshàng qù yīxià) 'I'll go right away.' When making appointments, it's common to ask 你什么时候有空? (nǐ shénme shíhou yǒu kòng?) 'When are you free?' rather than directly proposing a time.

    One thing to watch for

Adding 了 (le) to indicate future, as in 我明天去了。 (wǒ míngtiān qù le.)

Try this instead: 了 is not used for simple future. Say 我明天去。 (wǒ míngtiān qù.) 'I'm going tomorrow.' The time word 明天 already shows future; 了 often marks completion or change of state, so it would sound wrong here.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you say 'See you tomorrow' in Mandarin?

    Show a sample answer

    明天见。 (míngtiān jiàn.)

明天 (tomorrow) + 见 (see) is the standard phrase. You could also say 明天再见 (míngtiān zàijiàn), but 明天见 is more common for a simple farewell.

    2Translate: 'She is coming soon.'

    Show a sample answer

    她马上来。 (tā mǎshàng lái.)

马上 (soon) goes before the verb 来 (come). The subject 她 (she) comes first. This is the natural word order.

3Ask 'Are you free next week?' in Mandarin.

    Show a sample answer

下个星期你有空吗? (xià ge xīngqī nǐ yǒu kòng ma?)

The time marker 下个星期 comes at the beginning or before the verb. You can also say 你下个星期有空吗? (nǐ xià ge xīngqī yǒu kòng ma?) Both are correct; the first puts more emphasis on the time.

    Take this with you

To talk about the future in Mandarin, simply add a time word like 明天, 下个星期, or 马上 before the verb. No verb conjugation is needed.
