Expressing Preferences in Mandarin Chinese: 宁可 and 喜欢...还是...

Learn to express choices between options in Mandarin using 宁可 (nìngkě) and 喜欢...还是... (xǐhuan...háishì...), focusing on preference rather than simple likes and dislikes.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A warm illustrated language study space

In Mandarin, expressing a preference between two options requires different structures than simply stating what you like. This lesson teaches you to use 宁可 (nìngkě) to say you would rather do one thing than another, and 喜欢...还是... (xǐhuan...háishì...) to ask about or state preferences between choices. You will learn to form sentences like 'I'd rather stay home than go out' and 'I prefer tea to coffee.' These patterns are essential for making decisions, negotiating plans, and expressing your priorities clearly in everyday conversation.

    By the end, you can…

    • express that I would rather do one action than another using 宁可...也不...
    • ask and answer questions about preferences between two options using 喜欢...还是...
    • state a preference for one noun over another using 喜欢...比...

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    我宁可待在家里,也不出去。

I'd rather stay home than go out.

wǒ nìngkě dāi zài jiā lǐ, yě bù chūqù.

Use 宁可...也不... to contrast two actions; the first is preferred over the second.

    你喜欢喝茶还是喝咖啡?

Do you prefer tea or coffee?

nǐ xǐhuan hē chá háishì hē kāfēi?

Use 喜欢...还是... to ask about a preference between two options.

    我喜欢喝茶,不喜欢喝咖啡。

    I prefer tea; I don't like coffee.

wǒ xǐhuan hē chá, bù xǐhuan hē kāfēi.

State a preference by affirming one option and negating the other.

    我宁可走路,也不坐公交车。

I'd rather walk than take the bus.

wǒ nìngkě zǒulù, yě bù zuò gōngjiāochē.

Use this pattern to express a strong preference against the second option.

    你喜欢这本书还是那本书?

Do you prefer this book or that book?

nǐ xǐhuan zhè běn shū háishì nà běn shū?

Use 还是 to offer a choice between two nouns or actions.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The core pattern for 'would rather' is 宁可 (nìngkě) + preferred action + 也不 (yě bù) + less preferred action. For example, 我宁可在家吃饭,也不去饭馆 (wǒ nìngkě zài jiā chīfàn, yě bù qù fànguǎn) means 'I'd rather eat at home than go to a restaurant.' To express a preference between two options, use 喜欢 (xǐhuan) + option A + 还是 (háishì) + option B in questions, or 喜欢 A,不喜欢 B in statements. Note that 还是 is used for choices, while 或者 (huòzhě) is used for 'or' in statements, not questions.

    When to use it

Use 宁可...也不... when you want to emphasize a strong preference, often implying a trade-off or sacrifice. It is common in decisions like 我宁可少睡觉,也要完成工作 (wǒ nìngkě shǎo shuìjiào, yě yào wánchéng gōngzuò) 'I'd rather sleep less than not finish the work.' Use 喜欢...还是... when asking someone to choose between two options, such as 你喜欢红色还是蓝色? (nǐ xǐhuan hóngsè háishì lánsè?) 'Do you prefer red or blue?' In statements, you can simply say 我喜欢红色 (wǒ xǐhuan hóngsè) or contrast with 不喜欢. Avoid using 宁可 for simple likes; it implies a choice with a downside.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    周末你想去爬山还是看电影?

On the weekend, do you want to go hiking or watch a movie?zhōumò nǐ xiǎng qù páshān háishì kàn diànyǐng?
    B

    我宁可看电影,也不去爬山。爬山太累了。

I'd rather watch a movie than go hiking. Hiking is too tiring.wǒ nìngkě kàn diànyǐng, yě bù qù páshān. páshān tài lèi le.
    A

    那你喜欢看什么电影?喜剧还是动作片?

Then what kind of movies do you like? Comedies or action films?nà nǐ xǐhuan kàn shénme diànyǐng? xǐjù háishì dòngzuòpiàn?
    B

    我喜欢喜剧,不喜欢动作片。

I prefer comedies; I don't like action films.wǒ xǐhuan xǐjù, bù xǐhuan dòngzuòpiàn.

A little context goes a long way

In Mandarin, expressing preferences directly is common, but politeness can be added with softening phrases like 我觉得 (wǒ juéde, 'I think') or 可能 (kěnéng, 'maybe'). When refusing an invitation, using 宁可...也不... might sound blunt; consider adding a reason, as in 我宁可在家休息,因为有点累 (wǒ nìngkě zài jiā xiūxi, yīnwèi yǒudiǎn lèi). Also, 还是 is used in questions, while 或者 is used in statements; mixing them can confuse listeners.

    One thing to watch for

Using 或者 (huòzhě) instead of 还是 (háishì) in a question about preference, e.g., 你喜欢茶或者咖啡?

Try this instead: In questions offering a choice, use 还是: 你喜欢茶还是咖啡? (nǐ xǐhuan chá háishì kāfēi?). 或者 is for statements like 我可以喝茶或者咖啡 (wǒ kěyǐ hē chá huòzhě kāfēi) 'I can drink tea or coffee.'

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How would you say 'I'd rather take the train than fly' in Mandarin?

    Show a sample answer

    我宁可坐火车,也不坐飞机。

This uses 宁可...也不... to contrast the preferred action (坐火车) with the less preferred one (坐飞机).

2Ask a friend whether they prefer cats or dogs.

    Show a sample answer

    你喜欢猫还是狗?

This uses 喜欢...还是... to ask about a preference between two nouns. Alternatively, you could ask 你喜欢猫还是喜欢狗? with the verb repeated.

3Respond to '你喜欢红色还是蓝色?' if you prefer blue.

    Show a sample answer

    我喜欢蓝色,不喜欢红色。

This affirms the preferred option and negates the other. You could also simply say 我喜欢蓝色。 The contrast is optional but clear.

    Take this with you

Use 宁可...也不... for 'would rather... than...' and 喜欢...还是... for asking about preferences. Remember 还是 for questions, 或者 for statements.
