Expressing Strong Certainty in Mandarin Chinese: 一定, 肯定, and 当然

Learn to express strong certainty in Mandarin with 一定 (yídìng), 肯定 (kěndìng), and 当然 (dāngrán). Build confident sentences like 我一定来 and tell certainty apart from possibility.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A warm illustrated language study space

In Mandarin, strong certainty is not shown by changing a verb. Instead, you place a certainty word before the verb or adjective. The three most useful are 一定 (yídìng, definitely), 肯定 (kěndìng, certainly/surely), and 当然 (dāngrán, of course). This lesson teaches you to build confident sentences such as 我一定来 (I'm definitely coming) and to contrast them with possibility words like 可能 (kěnéng, maybe). You will practise word order, short answers, and the small differences in tone between the three words.

    By the end, you can…

    • express strong certainty with 一定, 肯定, and 当然 in simple sentences.
    • tell strong certainty apart from possibility using 可能.
    • answer a yes/no question with a confident short reply.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    我一定来。

    I'm definitely coming.

    wǒ yídìng lái。

一定 goes before the verb 来. Use it for a firm personal promise or decision.

    他肯定会同意。

    He will certainly agree.

    tā kěndìng huì tóngyì。

肯定 before 会 shows strong confidence about another person's future action.

    这当然是你的。

    Of course this is yours.

    zhè dāngrán shì nǐ de。

当然 often answers an obvious question or states something the listener should already know.

    明天一定下雨。

    It will definitely rain tomorrow.

    míngtiān yídìng xià yǔ。

一定 can also express a strong prediction about weather or events.

    你肯定不知道。

    You certainly don't know.

    nǐ kěndìng bù zhīdào。

肯定 before a negative verb still means strong certainty, not doubt.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The basic pattern is: subject + certainty word + verb or adjective. For example, 我一定去 (wǒ yídìng qù, I'm definitely going), 他肯定很忙 (tā kěndìng hěn máng, he's certainly very busy), and 这当然好 (zhè dāngrán hǎo, of course this is good). The certainty word comes after the subject and before the verb or adjective. If there is 会 (huì) or 能 (néng), the certainty word usually comes first: 他肯定会来 (tā kěndìng huì lái, he will certainly come).

    When to use it

Use 一定 for a strong personal decision or promise, as in 我一定帮你 (wǒ yídìng bāng nǐ, I'll definitely help you). Use 肯定 when you are confident about a fact or another person's action, as in 他肯定在家 (tā kěndìng zài jiā, he's certainly at home). Use 当然 for something obvious or expected, as in 当然可以 (dāngrán kěyǐ, of course you can). To show possibility instead, use 可能 (kěnéng, maybe): 他可能来 (tā kěnéng lái, he may come).

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    你明天来吗?

Are you coming tomorrow?nǐ míngtiān lái ma?
    B

    我一定来。

    I'm definitely coming.wǒ yídìng lái。
    A

    小李也会来吗?

Will Xiao Li come too?xiǎo lǐ yě huì lái ma?
    B

    他肯定会来。

He will certainly come.tā kěndìng huì lái。

A little context goes a long way

一定 is common in promises and commitments, so it can sound firm or even a little serious. 肯定 is often used in everyday conversation to show confidence about facts. 当然 can sound blunt if used too often, because it suggests the answer is obvious; in polite situations, adding 当然可以 (of course you can) is usually friendlier than a bare 当然.

    One thing to watch for

Putting the certainty word after the verb, as in 我来一定.

Try this instead: In Mandarin, the certainty word normally comes before the verb: 我一定来 (wǒ yídìng lái, I'm definitely coming). Keep the order subject + certainty word + verb.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1Translate into Mandarin: 'I'm definitely coming.'

    Show a sample answer

    我一定来。

一定 comes before the verb 来. 我肯定来 is also acceptable and means roughly the same, though 一定 is more common for a personal promise.

2Which word means 'maybe' and contrasts with strong certainty?

    Show a sample answer

    可能 (kěnéng)

可能 expresses possibility, while 一定, 肯定, and 当然 express strong certainty. For example, 他可能来 means 'he may come'.

3Make a confident sentence about Xiao Wang agreeing, using 肯定.

    Show a sample answer

    小王肯定会同意。

肯定 goes before 会 and the verb 同意. 小王一定同意 is also possible, but 肯定 fits confidence about another person's action well.

    Take this with you

Put 一定, 肯定, or 当然 before the verb to show strong certainty; use 可能 when you only mean 'maybe'.
