Mandarin Chinese: Chat About TV Shows with Friends
Learn to ask friends in Mandarin whether they have watched a show, say what you thought of it, and share quick reactions in casual conversation.

In this lesson you will learn how to talk about TV shows with friends in Mandarin Chinese. You will practice asking whether someone has watched a show, answering that you have or have not, saying what you thought of it, and giving a quick reaction. The focus is casual conversation, not detailed analysis. All examples use simplified Chinese characters with pinyin and tone marks. Pay attention to the particle 过 (guo) for past experience and 觉得 (juéde) for opinions. These two patterns will let you handle most friendly TV talk.
By the end, you can…
- ask a friend whether they have watched a TV show
- say that I have or have not watched a show
- share a simple reaction or opinion about a show
- ask what a friend thought of a show
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

你看过这个节目吗?
Have you watched this show?
Nǐ kàn guo zhège jiémù ma?
Use 过 (guo) after the verb 看 (kàn) to ask about past experience. 节目 (jiémù) means a TV show or program.
我看过。
I have watched it.
Wǒ kàn guo.
A short positive answer. The particle 过 (guo) shows you have had this experience at some point.
我没看过。
I haven't watched it.
Wǒ méi kàn guo.
Use 没 (méi) to negate 过 (guo). Do not say 不看过 (bù kàn guo).
你觉得怎么样?
What did you think of it?
Nǐ juéde zěnmeyàng?
A very common way to ask for someone's opinion about a show, movie, or food.
我觉得很好看。
I think it's really good.
Wǒ juéde hěn hǎokàn.
Use 觉得 (juéde) to give your opinion. 好看 (hǎokàn) means good-looking or enjoyable to watch.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.
Make it make sense
Useful pattern
The pattern 你看过……吗? (Nǐ kàn guo…… ma?) means 'Have you watched……?' Put the show name after 看过 (kàn guo). For example: 你看过《西游记》吗? (Nǐ kàn guo Xīyóujì ma?) 'Have you watched Journey to the West?' Answer with 我看过 (Wǒ kàn guo) or 我没看过 (Wǒ méi kàn guo). To give an opinion, use 我觉得 (wǒ juéde) plus a simple comment: 我觉得很有意思 (Wǒ juéde hěn yǒu yìsi) 'I think it's very interesting.'
When to use it
Use 过 (guo) when asking about any past experience, not a specific finished action. 你看过这个节目吗? (Nǐ kàn guo zhège jiémù ma?) asks whether you have ever watched it. If you want to ask about watching right now or in the future, do not use 过 (guo): 你想看这个节目吗? (Nǐ xiǎng kàn zhège jiémù ma?) 'Do you want to watch this show?' Use 觉得 (juéde) for opinions about shows, movies, and food. Keep reactions short and friendly in casual talk.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
你看过那个新节目吗?
Have you watched that new show?Nǐ kàn guo nàge xīn jiémù ma?没看过。好看吗?
I haven't watched it. Is it good?Méi kàn guo. Hǎokàn ma?我觉得很好看,很有意思。
I think it's really good, very interesting.Wǒ juéde hěn hǎokàn, hěn yǒu yìsi.那我今天晚上看看。
Then I'll watch it tonight.Nà wǒ jīntiān wǎnshang kàn kan.A little context goes a long way
Among friends, short reactions like 很好看 (hěn hǎokàn) or 一般 (yìbān) 'just so-so' are normal and polite enough. Direct negative comments such as 不好看 (bù hǎokàn) are fine with close friends but may sound blunt with acquaintances. If someone recommends a show, a friendly response is 好,我看看 (Hǎo, wǒ kàn kan) 'Okay, I'll take a look.'
One thing to watch for
Saying 我不看过 (Wǒ bù kàn guo) to mean 'I haven't watched it.'
Try this instead: Use 没 (méi), not 不 (bù), with 过 (guo): 我没看过 (Wǒ méi kàn guo). The particle 过 (guo) marks past experience, and its negative form is 没……过 (méi……guo).
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1How do you ask a friend, 'Have you watched this show?'
Show a sample answer
你看过这个节目吗? (Nǐ kàn guo zhège jiémù ma?)
This uses 看 (kàn) plus 过 (guo) for past experience, followed by the question particle 吗 (ma). You could also say 你看过这个节目没有? (Nǐ kàn guo zhège jiémù méiyǒu?), which is also correct.
2Your friend asks 你觉得怎么样? (Nǐ juéde zěnmeyàng?) about a show you liked. Give a short answer.
Show a sample answer
我觉得很好看。 (Wǒ juéde hěn hǎokàn.)
This answers with 觉得 (juéde) plus a simple positive comment. 很有意思 (hěn yǒu yìsi) 'very interesting' would also work well.
3Translate into Mandarin: 'I haven't watched it.'
Show a sample answer
我没看过。 (Wǒ méi kàn guo.)
The negative of 看过 (kàn guo) is 没看过 (méi kàn guo). Using 不 (bù) here would be incorrect.
Use 看过 (kàn guo) to ask about watching experience, 没看过 (méi kàn guo) to say you haven't, and 我觉得 (wǒ juéde) plus a short comment to share your reaction. Keep it simple and friendly.
