Learn to state a problem and suggest a solution in Mandarin using key phrases like 问题 and 一个办法. Practice through a natural conversation.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A warm illustrated language study space

In this lesson, you will learn how to describe a problem and propose a solution in Mandarin Chinese. This skill is essential for everyday conversations, meetings, and discussions. You will learn to use structures such as '问题是什么?' (What is the problem?) and '一个办法是...' (One solution is...). We will focus on clear, polite language that you can use in various situations. By the end, you will be able to identify an issue and suggest a practical solution.

    By the end, you can…

    • describe a problem using 问题 and related phrases.
    • propose a solution using 一个办法是... and 可以...
    • ask for and give suggestions in a conversation.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    问题是什么?

    What is the problem?

    Wèntí shì shénme?

Use this to ask about the main issue in a neutral or informal context.

    一个办法是...

    One solution is...

    Yī gè bànfǎ shì...

Introduce a possible solution. Follow with a verb phrase, e.g., 一个办法是坐地铁。

    我们可以...

    We can...

    Wǒmen kěyǐ...

Suggest a collective action. Use with a verb, e.g., 我们可以早点出发。

    这样就能...

    In this way, we can...

    Zhèyàng jiù néng...

Explain the result of a solution. Follow with a verb phrase, e.g., 这样就能避免堵车。

    你觉得呢?

    What do you think?

    Nǐ juéde ne?

Ask for the other person's opinion after proposing a solution.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

To describe a problem, use '问题是...' (The problem is...) followed by a noun or clause. For example, '问题是交通太堵了。' (The problem is the traffic is too heavy.) To propose a solution, use '一个办法是...' (One solution is...) or '我们可以...' (We can...). For instance, '一个办法是坐地铁。' (One solution is to take the subway.) or '我们可以早点出门。' (We can leave earlier.) To explain the result, use '这样就能...' (In this way, we can...), e.g., '这样就能准时到。' (In this way, we can arrive on time.)

    When to use it

Use these phrases in problem-solving discussions, such as at work, in community meetings, or with friends. '问题是...' is direct and can be used in both formal and informal settings. '一个办法是...' is polite and suggests a possibility without imposing. '我们可以...' is collaborative and inclusive. '这样就能...' highlights the benefit. When you want to be more formal, you can say '解决方案是...' (The solution is...). For example, in a meeting: '问题是预算不够。解决方案是减少开支。' (The problem is the budget is insufficient. The solution is to reduce expenses.)

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    最近交通越来越堵了,真是个问题。

Recently, the traffic is getting more and more congested. It's really a problem.Zuìjìn jiāotōng yuè lái yuè dǔ le, zhēn shì gè wèntí.
    B

    是啊,一个办法是坐地铁,这样就能避免堵车。

Yes, one solution is to take the subway, so we can avoid the traffic jam.Shì a, yī gè bànfǎ shì zuò dìtiě, zhèyàng jiù néng bìmiǎn dǔchē.
    A

    但是地铁很挤。我们可以错开高峰时间吗?

But the subway is crowded. Can we avoid the rush hour?Dànshì dìtiě hěn jǐ. Wǒmen kěyǐ cuòkāi gāofēng shíjiān ma?
    B

    可以,比如早出门半小时。你觉得呢?

Yes, for example, leaving half an hour earlier. What do you think?Kěyǐ, bǐrú zǎo chūmén bàn xiǎoshí. Nǐ juéde ne?

A little context goes a long way

In Chinese communication, it is common to state a problem directly, but when proposing solutions, using inclusive language like '我们' (we) helps maintain harmony. Politeness is often shown by asking for the other person's opinion with '你觉得呢?'. In formal settings, use '解决方案' instead of '办法'.

    One thing to watch for

Using '一个办法是...' with a noun instead of a verb phrase, e.g., '一个办法是地铁。'

Try this instead: After '一个办法是...', use a verb phrase. Say '一个办法是坐地铁。' (One solution is to take the subway.)

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you say 'The problem is the traffic is too heavy' in Chinese?

    Show a sample answer

    问题是交通太堵了。

This uses '问题是...' followed by a clause. Alternative: '问题就是交通太堵。' is also acceptable.

2Propose a solution: 'One solution is to leave earlier.'

    Show a sample answer

    一个办法是早点出发。

This follows the pattern '一个办法是...' with a verb phrase. You could also say '我们可以早点出发。'

3Ask 'What do you think?' after giving a suggestion.

    Show a sample answer

    你觉得呢?

This is a common way to invite the other person's opinion. In formal contexts, '您觉得怎么样?' is more polite.

    Take this with you

To describe a problem, use '问题是...'. To propose a solution, use '一个办法是...' or '我们可以...'. Always follow with a verb phrase, and ask '你觉得呢?' to include others.
