Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Friends talking over coffee in a city café

In this lesson, you will learn how to talk about protein content in Chinese, focusing on health benefits rather than dietary restrictions. You will use the key term 蛋白质 (protein) and the pattern 高 (high) to say 'This is high in protein.' You will also learn to discuss why protein is good for you using 对…有好处 (is good for) and how to talk about supplementing protein with 补充. By the end, you can describe foods, compare their protein levels, and explain health benefits in natural Mandarin. This lesson is for intermediate learners who already know basic food vocabulary and want to discuss nutrition more precisely.

    By the end, you can…

    • say that a food is high or low in protein using 高 and 低.
    • explain the health benefits of protein using 对…有好处.
    • ask and answer questions about protein content in foods.
    • use 补充 to talk about supplementing protein in a diet.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    这个蛋白质很高。

    This is high in protein.

    Zhège dànbáizhì hěn gāo.

Use 这个 for 'this' when referring to a food item. 蛋白质 means protein. 很高 means 'very high'. This is the most direct way to say a food is high in protein. Note that 这个 here refers to the food, not to 蛋白质 itself.

    鸡肉蛋白质高吗?

    Is chicken high in protein?

    Jīròu dànbáizhì gāo ma?

Add 吗 to turn a statement into a yes/no question. 鸡肉 means chicken meat. This pattern works with any food: [food] + 蛋白质高吗?

    蛋白质对肌肉有好处。

    Protein is good for muscles.

    Dànbáizhì duì jīròu yǒu hǎochù.

对…有好处 means 'is good for'. 肌肉 means muscles. Use this to explain health benefits. You can replace 肌肉 with other body parts or health aspects.

    我需要补充蛋白质。

    I need to supplement protein.

    Wǒ xūyào bǔchōng dànbáizhì.

补充 means 'to supplement' or 'to replenish'. Use this when talking about adding protein to your diet. 需要 means 'need'.

    豆类蛋白质含量高。

Beans are high in protein content.

    Dòulèi dànbáizhì hánliàng gāo.

含量 means 'content' or 'amount'. This is a more formal way to say 'high in protein'. 豆类 means 'beans' or 'legumes'. Use 含量高 for a precise, factual tone.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The core pattern for saying a food is high in protein is: [food] + 蛋白质 + 高. For example, 鸡蛋蛋白质高 (Eggs are high in protein). To make it more formal or precise, use 蛋白质含量高: 鱼类蛋白质含量高 (Fish is high in protein content). To say 'low', replace 高 with 低: 蔬菜蛋白质低 (Vegetables are low in protein). To ask a question, add 吗 at the end: 牛肉蛋白质高吗? (Is beef high in protein?). You can also use 很 before 高 to emphasize: 这个蛋白质很高 (This is very high in protein).

    When to use it

Use these patterns when discussing nutrition with friends, reading food labels, or talking to a doctor or nutritionist. For casual conversation, 蛋白质高 is natural. For a more scientific or formal context, 蛋白质含量高 is better. When explaining benefits, use 对…有好处: 蛋白质对健康有好处 (Protein is good for health). To talk about needing more protein, say 需要补充蛋白质 (need to supplement protein). Avoid using 高 alone without 蛋白质 if the context is unclear; always specify what is high.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    B

    当然,蛋白质对肌肉生长很有好处。你还可以喝蛋白粉来补充蛋白质。

Of course, protein is very good for muscle growth. You can also drink protein powder to supplement protein.Dāngrán, dànbáizhì duì jīròu shēngzhǎng hěn yǒu hǎochù. Nǐ hái kěyǐ hē dànbáifěn lái bǔchōng dànbáizhì.

A little context goes a long way

In Chinese health discussions, there is a strong emphasis on balance and moderation. While protein is valued, especially for fitness and recovery, it is rarely discussed in isolation. Traditional Chinese medicine and modern nutrition both stress harmony among food groups. When talking about protein, it's common to mention vegetables and grains alongside it, e.g., 要均衡饮食 (eat a balanced diet). Also, 蛋白质 is a neutral, scientific term; using it shows you are informed. Avoid extreme statements like 'only protein matters' as they may sound unbalanced.

    One thing to watch for

    Saying 这个高蛋白质 instead of 这个蛋白质高.

Try this instead: In Chinese, the property (高) comes after the noun (蛋白质) when using the pattern [noun] + [adjective]. So say 这个蛋白质高 (This is high in protein). If you want to use 高 as an adjective before a noun, you need 的: 高蛋白质的食物 (high-protein food). But for a simple statement, keep the order: subject + 蛋白质 + 高.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you say 'Fish is high in protein' in Chinese?

    Show a sample answer

    鱼肉蛋白质高。

This uses the basic pattern [food] + 蛋白质 + 高. 鱼肉 means fish meat. You could also say 鱼肉蛋白质含量高 for a more formal tone.

2Translate: 'Is tofu good for health?'

    Show a sample answer

    豆腐对健康有好处吗?

This uses 对…有好处 (is good for) with 健康 (health). Adding 吗 makes it a yes/no question.

3How would you say 'I need to supplement protein'?

    Show a sample answer

    我需要补充蛋白质。

This uses 需要 (need) + 补充 (supplement) + 蛋白质 (protein). You can also say 我要补充蛋白质, which is slightly more casual.

    Take this with you

To talk about protein in Chinese, remember: [food] + 蛋白质 + 高 for 'high in protein', 对…有好处 for health benefits, and 补充 for supplementing. Use 含量高 for a formal tone. Always specify the food and keep the adjective after the noun.
