Disagreeing in Mandarin While Respecting the Other Person's View
Learn elementary Mandarin phrases to acknowledge someone's opinion first, then disagree politely using 我明白你的意思,但是… and similar patterns.

In Mandarin conversation, disagreeing directly can sound abrupt. A common and useful strategy is to first show that you have understood the other person's view, then introduce your own different opinion. This lesson teaches fixed, beginner-friendly patterns such as 我明白你的意思,但是… (I see what you mean, but…) and 你说得对,不过… (You're right, however…). These are not just polite formulas; they are respect strategies that keep the conversation calm and cooperative. You will practice short, natural sentences that let you disagree without rejecting the speaker.
By the end, you can…
- acknowledge someone's opinion in Mandarin before disagreeing.
- use 但是 and 不过 to introduce a different view politely.
- respond to a simple opinion in a short conversation.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.
Checking available voices…
我明白你的意思,但是…
I see what you mean, but…
wǒ míngbai nǐ de yìsi, dànshì…
Use when you understand the other person's point but want to give a different opinion. 明白 means 'understand' and 意思 means 'meaning/point'.
你说得对,不过…
You're right, however…
nǐ shuō de duì, búguò…
A softer disagreement. 你说得对 acknowledges the person's statement, and 不过 introduces a contrast.
我同意一部分,可是…
I agree with part of it, but…
wǒ tóngyì yí bùfen, kěshì…
Useful when you partly agree. 一部分 means 'a part' and 可是 is a common 'but'.
这个想法很好,只是…
That's a good idea, it's just that…
zhège xiǎngfa hěn hǎo, zhǐshì…
Praise first, then add a limitation. 只是 softens the disagreement and often introduces a small problem.
我有一点不同的看法。
I have a slightly different view.
wǒ yǒu yìdiǎn bùtóng de kànfǎ.
A direct but gentle way to signal disagreement. 一点 means 'a little' and makes the statement less absolute.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

Useful pattern
A very common respect strategy in Mandarin is: acknowledge + contrast + opinion. The acknowledgment can be 我明白你的意思 (I understand your point), 你说得对 (you're right), or 这个想法很好 (this idea is good). The contrast word is usually 但是, 不过, 可是, or 只是. Then you give your own view. For example: 我明白你的意思,但是我觉得这个太贵了。 (I see what you mean, but I think this is too expensive.) 你说得对,不过我们时间不够。 (You're right, however we don't have enough time.) The first part is not empty politeness; it shows you listened before you disagree.
When to use it
Use this pattern in everyday conversations with classmates, coworkers, friends, or family when you do not want to sound rude. It is especially useful in group decisions, such as choosing a restaurant or making a plan. For example, if someone says 我们周末去爬山吧 (Let's go hiking this weekend), you can answer 我明白你的意思,但是周末会下雨。 (I see what you mean, but it will rain this weekend.) If you agree partly, say 我同意一部分,可是我觉得太远了。 (I agree with part of it, but I think it's too far.) Keep your tone calm and your sentence short at the elementary level.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
我们周末去爬山吧。
Let's go hiking this weekend.wǒmen zhōumò qù páshān ba.我明白你的意思,但是周末会下雨。
I see what you mean, but it will rain this weekend.wǒ míngbai nǐ de yìsi, dànshì zhōumò huì xià yǔ.你说得对,不过我们可以去博物馆。
You're right, however we can go to the museum.nǐ shuō de duì, búguò wǒmen kěyǐ qù bówùguǎn.这个想法很好,只是博物馆周末人很多。
That's a good idea, it's just that the museum is crowded on weekends.zhège xiǎngfa hěn hǎo, zhǐshì bówùguǎn zhōumò rén hěn duō.A little context goes a long way
In many Mandarin conversations, showing that you have heard the other person's view before disagreeing helps maintain harmony and saves face for both sides. The acknowledgment phrase is usually short and sincere, not exaggerated. Direct disagreement is not forbidden, but adding 我觉得 (I think) or 一点 (a little) often makes your view sound less absolute. In formal or workplace settings, people may use slightly longer acknowledgments, while friends often keep it brief.
One thing to watch for
Using 但是 at the very beginning of a disagreement, for example: 但是我觉得不对。
Try this instead: In Mandarin, starting directly with 但是 can sound abrupt. First acknowledge the other person's view, then contrast: 我明白你的意思,但是我觉得不对。 This keeps the disagreement respectful and natural.
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

Show a sample answer
我明白你的意思,但是…
This uses 我明白你的意思 to acknowledge the other person, then 但是 to introduce your different view. You can also say 我懂你的意思,但是… in casual speech.
2Which phrase means 'You're right, however…'?
Show a sample answer
你说得对,不过…
你说得对 acknowledges the other person's statement, and 不过 introduces a softer contrast. 可是 can also replace 不过 with a similar meaning.
3Make a polite disagreement to: 我们坐火车去。 (Let's go by train.)
Show a sample answer
我明白你的意思,但是坐火车太慢了。
This follows the acknowledge + contrast + opinion pattern. Other valid answers include 你说得对,不过坐火车太慢了 or 我同意一部分,可是坐火车太慢了.
Acknowledge first, then disagree: use 我明白你的意思,但是… or 你说得对,不过… to keep your Mandarin respectful and clear.
