Declining an Invitation Politely in Mandarin Chinese: Saying 'I Can't Make It' with a Reason

Learn to politely decline an invitation in Mandarin using 不好意思 and 不能去, then give a clear reason with 因为…所以… or 要…, and respond appropriately when someone declines you.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.

In Mandarin, refusing an invitation is not just a matter of saying 'no'. A natural polite refusal usually has three parts: a soft opener such as 不好意思 (bù hǎoyìsi, 'sorry / excuse me'), a clear statement that you cannot attend, and a reason. The key phrase for 'I can't go' is 我不能去 (wǒ bù néng qù). To give a reason, you can use 因为…所以… (yīnwèi…suǒyǐ…, 'because… so…') or the simpler pattern 我要… (wǒ yào…, 'I need to / I have to…'). This lesson focuses only on declining; accepting an invitation uses different wording and is not covered here. Keep your tone gentle: in Chinese, a short reason is usually enough, and you do not need a long apology.

    By the end, you can…

    • politely open a refusal with 不好意思.
    • say 我不能去 and give a simple reason using 因为…所以… or 要….
    • respond appropriately when someone declines my invitation.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    不好意思,我不能去。

    Sorry, I can't go.

bù hǎoyìsi, wǒ bù néng qù

A polite, common refusal. 不好意思 softens the refusal; 不能去 means 'cannot go'.

    因为我有事,所以不能去。

Because I have something to do, I can't go.

yīnwèi wǒ yǒu shì, suǒyǐ bù néng qù

A clear reason with 因为…所以…. 有事 means 'have something to do / have plans'.

    我要加班。

    I have to work overtime.

    wǒ yào jiā bān

Use 要 before a verb to say what you need or have to do. 加班 means 'work overtime'.

    真不巧,我那天没空。

What a pity, I'm not free that day.

zhēn bù qiǎo, wǒ nà tiān méi kòng

真不巧 expresses mild regret; 没空 means 'not free / no time'.

    下次吧,好吗?

    Maybe next time, okay?

    xià cì ba, hǎo ma

A friendly way to soften a refusal and suggest a future meeting. 下次 means 'next time'.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The most useful refusal pattern is 不好意思,我不能去,因为… (bù hǎoyìsi, wǒ bù néng qù, yīnwèi…). For example: 不好意思,我不能去,因为我要加班。('Sorry, I can't go, because I have to work overtime.') You can also use 因为…所以…: 因为我有事,所以不能去。('Because I have something to do, I can't go.') Note that 不能去 means 'cannot go', while 不去 (bù qù) means 'am not going / do not want to go'. 不能去 is usually softer and more polite for a refusal.

    When to use it

Use this refusal when a friend, classmate or colleague invites you to dinner, a party or a trip. Start with 不好意思 or 真不巧, then say 我不能去, then give one short reason. For example: 真不巧,我那天没空,我要回家。('What a pity, I'm not free that day; I have to go home.') If you want to keep the relationship warm, add 下次吧,好吗?('Maybe next time, okay?') Avoid a long explanation; one clear reason is enough in most everyday situations.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    下个星期吧。下次我一定去,好吗?

Next week. Next time I'll definitely go, okay?xià ge xīngqī ba. xià cì wǒ yídìng qù, hǎo ma

A little context goes a long way

In Mandarin, a polite refusal often includes a brief reason and a softener such as 不好意思 or 真不巧. Directly saying 不去 without a reason can sound abrupt, especially to someone older or to a colleague. Adding 下次吧 or 下次我一定去 shows you value the relationship. The phrase 不好意思 is very common and does not necessarily mean a serious apology; it simply makes the refusal gentler.

    One thing to watch for

Saying 我不去,因为我有事。 as a bare refusal.

Try this instead: Add a polite opener and use 不能去: 不好意思,我不能去,因为我有事。 The opener 不好意思 softens the refusal, and 不能去 sounds less blunt than 不去.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you politely say 'Sorry, I can't go' in Mandarin?

    Show a sample answer

    不好意思,我不能去。

不好意思 softens the refusal, and 我不能去 means 'I can't go'. You can also say 真不巧,我不能去。 Both are polite; 不好意思 is the most common opener.

2Give a refusal with the reason 'I have to work overtime'.

    Show a sample answer

    不好意思,我不能去,因为我要加班。

因为 introduces the reason, and 要加班 means 'have to work overtime'. You can also say 因为我要加班,所以不能去。 The meaning is the same.

3Your friend says 真不巧,我不能去。 What can you say to keep it friendly?

    Show a sample answer

    没关系,下次吧,好吗?

没关系 means 'it's okay', and 下次吧,好吗? suggests meeting next time. You could also say 好的,下次一定来! Both keep the tone friendly.

    Take this with you

To decline politely in Mandarin, use 不好意思 + 我不能去 + one short reason, and add 下次吧 to keep the relationship warm.
